thanks everyone,we still haven't decided, and thanks for raising some great points about s**tzu's needing higher maintenace on the grooming side. I have 5 yorkies already to groom, so i guess it would be nice to have a low maintenance dog. We are currently looking at all the breeds on the net, to see if we can determine which breed would best suit our family and way of life. I also thougt it might be nice to go to the rescue shelters to see if there is one that needs a home. I will post back here when we eventually decide  (you might have a long wait) lol:D |

If you like the Shih Tzu's don't let their high maintenance bother you. IMO they are only high maintenance if you let them be. I always kept my Shih Tzu cut short to avoid this and she would let me do anything I had to, to her. They are a wonderful breed. Just keep your options open. Then again there are lots of wonderful toy breeds out there. |

WOW, reading this makes me really wonder... I amwanting another SMALL dog, was thinking of a Maltese as I see alot of people here have them and they are most like Yorkies..... Tootie needs a pal, but WOW what alot to think about??? d |

Have you considered a Havanese. It's a relatively "rare" breed, so you may not have heard of it. I'm a long-time, die-hard yorkie lover, but my husband and kids want something a little different. I'm still considering another yorkie, but my other choice would be, hands-down, a Havanese. They are slightly bigger than a large yorkie, so they're not too big, and the coat is a non-shedding coat, similar to a yorkies. I've read nothing but wonderful things about the Havanese, and I've yet to come across anyone who doesn't just rave about the breed. Just a thought! |

I have looked at these and LOVE them, but I want something smaller than Tootie is.. he is 14 pounds and I want to stay around 7 or 8.. my oldest daughter wants a chi, really bad but I have a chi mix that is MEAN to everyone except me.. LOL... especially Tootie! |

Just make sure you let us know what you decide upon! |

How about a minature daschnud? We got one a month ago. She is now 1 weeks old and she gets along fabulously with our Yorkiw Muffin. They sleep together, play together, eat together, do everything together. I am so hapy we found her. Muffin just loves her guts...and she is low maintenance ie short hair, won't get much bigger than 6 pounds either. |

i love maltese's.....ohhhh you have to get a maltese. my neighbors have one and i think they are so much like yorkies......get a maltese |

If I wasn't a die hard yorkie girl, I'd definitely have a maltese! What a fun decision to make.:) |

shedding I am a broken record..but I can not deal with shedding. I am hopelessly spoiled when it comes to this problem. I find Malts do not shed and mine never had any odor...I do not mind a few hairs here and there, but I have different friends with Shelties, Huskies, Poms, Cockers..when you sit down, your clothes are covered in hair in 3 mins...and their hosues smell like dogs..these are clean people too...I never found Yorkies had much odor if they have healthy teeth and bathe at least twice a month...I do mine each week, but they do not need really it.. My shorthair mini Doxies shed twice a year and that wasn't bad..I could deal with another one I think..maybe..but once you live with Yorkies that it for me. |

I think you should say what do you expect from the breed, so it will be much more easy to help you :) I like chi and poms from the list the most, because many of them don't like strangers and loyal to they owners. |

I love Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I was going to get one before i decided on a yorkie. However, my mother doesn't want the hair in the house, and she wanted something smaller so we opted for a yorkie. |

I am new here (looking for a yorkie and getting info) and I have a pom and a chi. I recommend both of those breeds. We have had our chi Buffy for almost 5 years she is layed back, loving and a great personality. We just got our pom Rocco in February(valentines gift from hubby) he is a ball of fun. He is almost 7 months, great personality, playful and is easily trained. I know people have heard both breeds can be territorial and nippy, but I think it has to do with where they come from(good breeder) and how they are socialized as a puppy(that is why the breeder is important). I love all small breeds, but these three are my favorite, I can't wait to find my perfect little yorkie. Good luck with finding the right breed for you. |
