Silky coat or cottony coat? Eddie has a cottony coat, and Jack has a silky coat. I prefer Eddie's because it's low maintenance. Jack's looks best when it is brushed daily. I would suspect that show-quality Yorkies would have to be silky. But I'm wondering what YTers think. If you had a choice, would you choose silky or cottony? |
I prefer silky coat . |
Schatzi has a cottony coat, and I love it! I've never cut it and it looks beautiful after I brush her. I like that her coat is thick; my friend has yorkie with silky hair and it's much thinner. Anyway, I like Schatzi's dark color, and I heard that those colors are usually cottony.... |
Parker is more cottony and I love it. He too is Dark in color which I love. After he is brushed he looks great. Nice thick coat too. I'm getting another baby girl with a thick coat too. I cant wait!!! She too will be dark in color. |
I said silky, because I have 1 of each, and Tripp matts very easy (cotton coat), while Tucker is much easier to maintain (silky coat). He does get oily, but he has a puppy cut so a bath once a week makes him look very nice. One thing about Tucker though is his hair isn't that soft, it can be somewhat coarse- I've never understood that- everything but his back is nice and soft |
I like both! But I have to say that Fergie's I guess is more of a soft coat. It never matts and it is staying black and she still looks like a little puppy! I think the cottony coat is beautiful as well:) |
I perfer the silky coat because that is what the breed standard calls for. |
I chose-it doesn't matter because I have 1 of each and they both have pros and cons. He(Bubba is cottony) and she (Sissy) is silky. On a bad day he looks like a brillo pad and she looks like an oil slick but both just came from the groomer and look beautiful today |
I think I prefer the silky coat Lucy has the cottony coat and I tell you it is a lot more work. It is thick and fluffy and somewhat curly (on her behind.) I am trying to grow it out and it seems like it never really grows and just gets wavy and out of control. SHe looks like a mop. Maybe if one day it will grows out and look awesome?? Milo has the silk hair and although it is a lot thinner it is not much work. I mean they both need the special shampoos, conditioners and products..but his seems to stay in place more.:D |
All my Yorkies have silky coats . |
our yorkie's coat Our yorkie's hair on her head & chest feels very silky but the hair on her back is straight but always rather messy until I brush it which I do every day. She shakes herself after brushing & then it is messy looking again. On her legs it is like she has an undercoat of tan with thin black laying over that. Is that normal? I wish it was thicker on her legs. Elcameno |
Dior has a silky coat and i love it. She brushes out fairly easily. |
I prefer Kalani's silky coat, it's easier to take care of. Hoku's cottony coat matts so very easily and grows like crazy so it seems I'm always having to trim her up. |
I prefer the silky coat, as I think it's easier to care for :) |
I have one of each and the silky coat is much easier to care for, but I do have to say I love the dark cotton thick coat best. |
I used to have two boys and one was cotton and one silk; now I have Izzy who is silk. I voted no preferance since I wouldn't choose a companion based on coat but I do like the teddy bear feel of the cotton -they look so cuddly. Maintenance of the silk coat to me is harder - you have to brush/comb every day for it to look good. But either is fine with me - they all look beautiful. :D |
Hello y'all! I never heard of different types of coats on the Yorkies...but I'm new to this breed so How can I tell if my pup Baby has a Silky or cottony coat? I don't know the difference. |
I don't have a preference but Lucy is a silky coat and it's easy to take care of. I did notice when we were in North Carolina and my neices spent lots of time playing with her that she started to look oily. When we are home she goes to the groomer every two weeks so I've never noticed her coat being oily before. |

Yes mama I have pictures here is two I resized. She too looks greasy sometimes. I don't know why....does that mean she is a silky. It really don't matter cause I think she is so adorable just like she is, just hoping for easier hair. ;) http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u.../edit_2527.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u.../edit_2515.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u...Baby/baby2.jpg Thanks for replying. |
i'm voting silky because maggie has partly silky, partly cottony coat and i have soooo much trouble with the cottony part!!! |

I prefer the silky coat, this is what Suzy has. |
I know this is an old thread but I am up late soo.... I have a silk coat but when I got him I didn't know about the coats I have never seen a cotton coat in person but I love the way they look. so fluffy and cute and had I a choice I would have chosen a cotton coat |
My pup has a silky coat.:) |
1 Attachment(s) I am so lame! I don't know the difference. I just know that Max's and Madison's are totally different, but I'm not sure that cottony is what Madison's is....if I post a photo would someone tell me what they think it is? His hair is VERY fine. Whichever is which (I think Max's is silky b/c it's so nice), Max's is MUCH nicer and easy to care for! Madison's seems to mat very easily! I'll attach one of Madison on a bad bad hair day~ |
silk or cottony coat I would like to know the difference between a silky & cottony coat. My yorkie looks great right after I comb her but then she shakes herself & then you wouldn't know that I had just combed her. It will look very messy & stringy. I can't t figure it out. Are there any other yorkies out there like that? I would like to know what kind of a coat is like that? Also she is such a finiky eater. If she goes a day or alittle less without eating she will vomit this yellow liquid. I don't know how many different bags of dry food I have tried. I recently went to science diet canned food. She was satisfied with that for awhile. It is really hard to satisfy her. I just may have to try boiled hamburger & chicken now. She does like cottage cheese. I have given her raw carrots & red peppers. Now she doesn't like the red peppers. |
