Wow, great info, KJC! Thanks for posting! The first time that I ever experienced it was when I took Jackson to Petsmart to get his nails cut (probably at about 1.5yrs old). He WIGGED out sooo bad (I did not like how they handled him) and expressed his anal glands - he was so terrified. It was an awful smell, oh god! That was the first time I had ever experienced it - he had been groomed prior but honestly, I am unsure if the groomer expressed them or didn't. Now whenever he is extremely scared, he expresses them, so typically it happens at the vets. But yeah, sometimes after playing really hard at the park, he's expressed them too. He has done it twice now after a trip to this one park with the same dog, so weird. I always just just stick him in the sink and wash his butt up. So I guess he does it himself. I will ask his groomer next time if he she expresses his anal glands or not, because I am honestly not sure. |
Jack scoots across the carpeting.... Not a very gentlemanly thing to do :p I express his on an as needed basis. I had been doing them quite frequently, but then he started going potty outside more and I noticed he would express them out there, so now I just do it when he scoots. I do his externally and just before his bath or while he's in the bath so the stink can go down the drain. I wish his smelled like fish... not so... much worse - maybe more like fish that has been sitting out in the hot sun for a day or so... yucky! |

Luckily, I have never had a problem with Sasha's anal glands *knocks on wood* however if I did have to have hers expressed, I would probably just take her to the vets office to have it done. |
Kacee has always emptied her own. Muffin had to have hers done though. They are all different, but if they have no problems then I think it's better to let nature do it naturally. |
Couver's anal glands get full and he starts licking and scooting so I take him to the vet to get them expressed. I only take him when they start bothering him and I only have to take him a few times a year. Khloe seems to express hers on her own... She hasn't ever had any problems :) I think it's unncecessary to express them unless they are FULL. |
I've never had to do it with any of mine. It does seem once you start doing it for them they will need it done all the time. |
My boys do it all on their own. The only time either one had to have them expressed was when Max was a pup and a vet with large fingers manually retrieved a stool sample. He had a big problem for 2 weeks. Our breeder told us to add peas to his diet and that fixed everything. Max does express more easily outdoors on walks than indoors on piddle pads. |
I have my groomer d it, it's part of grooming and bath day. My girlfriend has a yorkie and tell me she smell real bad and we gave her a bath, I said did you clean her anal glands?? She tell me What is that ?? I told her and she told me no I can't belived its that !!! Ok she had her groom and sure enough she needed it done , I do it every month on all of them. |
Mine express their own :) |
Levi takes care of it on his own. :p |
Oh wow! Ok... I feel dumb now. Taz scoots once in a while ...I didn't know this was the reason. |
My groomer does it for both my furbabies. It's always been that way, it is part of their grooming package along with nails and ears as well :) However, if my groomer considers they don't need it then she won't do it but if they do she does. I like it that way. |
