How often do you brush your kiddo(s)? I was wondering how often you brush your kiddos - and in conjunction with that, how are your issues with mats? For example, in the poll you could choose "once a week" - and then comment "I see a lot of mats" -- or, "once a week" and comment "I hardly see any mats" -- etcetera. |
Knock on wood, Princess has never had a major mat, the worst has been a few tangles after her top knot comes out. |
Kinda embarrassing, but I can rarely get my kids brushed more than once a week....some of it is just pure laziness :(. I deal with a fair amount of mats....even though they all have different coat textures. Pfeiffer is the silkiest, and hers are a little more easy to work at. Marcel is cottony and his can be so hard to work out. Do you put anything on the mat prior to working on it, btw? |

I have the topknot tanglers too. ETA: Oops! I think I see now that you did vote. :) |
Dori's cotton coat gets brushed before bedtime. Her little Puppia harness leaves a matted chest, but our Madden brush is up to the task. |
I used to be really good and brush Armani every single day- then I got lazy I guess- partially because they behave very very badly when I brush them- it was such a struggle all the time- I either need a second set of hands (not easy when you live alone) or I have to muzzle them for their own protection- so I went down to a few times a week (sometimes less)- they do get a few mats on their legs, under their belly, and in their armpits- but otherwise they are pretty much okay. They also go to the groomer every 6 weeks (used to be every 8 weeks, but I started going more frequently when i stopped brushing as well) She always says they are fine- so I guess its not too bad. When I strike it rich (hit the lotto, become a trust fund baby, marry rich, etc) they will just go to the groomer weekly for bath, brush, blowout and I will be done with my grooming duties for good :) |
2 Attachment(s) How can anyone brush these furmesses once per week??!!! I brush my boys every morning before breakfast and every night before bed. I'm very lucky because they both absolutely love it. Cooper mats very easily and I imagine that if I brushed him any less he would have dreadlocks. Max doesn't really mat, but he tangles. Brushing more often just alleviates any potential hair nightmares. Here's a photo of Max waiting to get his belly brushed Attachment 345151 Cooper sitting pretty waiting for his topknotAttachment 345152 |
I brush Gidget every day. If I miss a day, she is already starting to tangle. Off topic - that pic of Cooper waiting patiently for his top knot is so cute! |
I voted daily because I do completely brush, at least Reno every day, along with topknots for all (sometimes several times a day on topknots:rolleyes:). Ruby's coat is short and gets brushed out every 2-3 days. Razz is brushed about every other day for now but as his coat gets longer it will require a daily grooming just like Reno (poor boys). I rarely have mats to deal with but do use corn starch to work out any mats that may occur. |
We keep our pups in a short cut and knock on wood we don't have issues with mats. The only time we had an issue was after Bandit got neutered and he got one. |
I brush mine about 4-6 times a week... skip a day here and there. (I voted everyday) I think another important factor to consider is coat length. Tink is silky but matted badly when her coat was shorter than it does now that it hits the floor. Her coat tends to dry out and that makes it worse, so I use extra conditioning both at bath time and at brush time. For bad mats, I take some corn starch and work it into the mat then tease it out with a single tooth of my comb. It is so much easier if I at least hit them all quickly with the brush daily than if I wait. So if I don't have time for a complete brush out, I do a tidy brushing, enough to make them look neat but still needing some work. That keeps them from getting too bad. |
I brush daily...kids love it...and it give me one on one time with each.:D no mats at all but if I don't do it daily I find a few mats. |
Laci hates to be brushed but since I shave her body its really just brushing out her legs, although her body is cottony her legs and face are more silky and get less matted. She is kinda of a tom boy so she does not care to be brushed out every day, thank goodness because I do not feel like doing it either !! :) |
i voted 2 to 3 times a week but its probably more like 4 to 5 times a week ( there wasnt that choice on the poll ). Peyton is very good about me brushing her. she sits still and doesnt seem to mind it much at all. If i skip a day or 2 she doesnt get matted |
I brush Belle daily, she's never had any mats or tangles. Her coat is very fine and silky. She's still just a pup @ only 6 months old and I'm hoping that it stays this way! Its such a big difference between her coat and my shih tzu's - I swear he mats up terribly if I don't brush him twice a day. |
What is the trick with the corn starch? I've never heard of that. I just have a little travel spray bottle I put a dab of conditioner in & filled the rest with water for small tangles. That pic of Max totally describes Princess. It's like the brush hypnotizes her, when she wont chill out especially I'll show it to her & she runs to my lap & melts like butter!;) Of course if I try this on the bathroom counter everything is different! lol. |
i have 2 girls with floor lenght hair and i just find that its easier everyday then there are no mats we do it morning and evening mikey and gracie are shorter and i find there legs get mats on them .and then there is little keeper he was getting done every day and now that he is wearing a neck splint we are only useing baby wipes as it is to hard on him |
Tibbe gets the 2-4 times a week as some weeks when he's out more he gets brushed more and when its raining and he's not out a lot, he doesn't get brushed maybe but once that week. Varies according to how his coat looks. He's cotton-coated but rarely mats as I keep him in puppy coat. He used to hate brushing but now kind of likes it. |

I only brush once a time every week and I hardly ever have mats this way. I bath them once every week as well. I think a good conditioning is what helps them stay mat free. I remember a long time ago they would have mats if I didn't brush them out every day. That was before I used a good conditioner. I was told to by a groomer to let it set for 8 minutes and it really seems to do the trick. Oh and my yorkies have silk coats. Now my cotton coats like my yorkiepoo and maltese can be brushed once a week as well with no matting but they can't go any longer than that. By two weeks they would have some matting but nothing too bad and they still combed out easily. The yorkies I can get by with 2 weeks with no matting. Oh and I use CC's Ice on Ice to spray on a mat to comb it out whenever they do have a mat. I'm glad I only have to brush them out once a week, it saves so much time. |
I have never heard of the corn starch thing, where have I been? I'm excited to try this, bc I feel bad when I have to work out a mat. Thanks ladies! |
I voted every day BUT that's only Bogey. He sits very nicely to be brushed, combed and topknotted. Doodlebug a quick brush every couple of days. He cooperates somewhat. Now Pebbles she's a totally different story. I have to chase her down to brush her. But that's just how she is about everything. |
I brush Cali every morning before we leave for work, then in the evening when she hears the into music for the new I watch she runs and gets her brush because she knows I will sit down for a while and brush her. She never gets tangled or matted since I started using PEK from Iv San Bernard -- that stuff is Grrrreat! She loves to be brushed - almost goes to sleep - but hates to have her mustache combed! |
Once per week, bath day, for full brush out. Otherwise, I only comb a little on mustaches and topknots daily, and look for tangles from harnesses. Maximo rarely tangles and is better off if I give him a bath, rather than try to brush him. Teddy can turn into a bird's nest when he gets dirty. A little PetSilk Silk Serum makes it easy to brush him out. |
Once a week... I love short 'do's. And the "brushing" consists of just combing his mustache and facial hair, brushing his tail, basically. |
I brush my two Yorkie's everynight at bedtime. It is there way of relaxing and getting one on one attention.! |

OMG that is tooo cute! |
I brush Rosie every day. Sometimes twice a day. With her long hair, she gets mats if I don't brush. Also, I always use a spray to help. Sometimes Yorkie Sheen, Ice on Ice, and now Isle of Dogs. |
Your baby girl is beautiful!!! I have never tried any of those products. Where do you buy them? My 2nd Yorkie passed away last month. So, I decided to get a new one. Well, I ended up with two! So now I have double trouble. LOL They are two little girls and a lot of fun! I brush them every night to get used to the brush. Neither of them really like it. But, they will. I am going to make their first grooming appointment soon! Hopefully, they will like Cara, our groomer. I don't like the puppy cut. I like the traditional Yorkie cut. |
Snickers has a modified coat, I think. I keep him fairly short and he gets a thorough brushing every day when he gets up and gets his top knot put in, then a quick brush before bed. I don't normally see any mats. Sometimes he will get some little tangles on his feet when his hair starts to grow out. I don't really feel them, but he will wince a little....he seems to be very sensitive. He eats wet food...4 times per day...so that definitely causes some tangles in his mussel. |
