Maybe you could just cut down the amount you are feeding and still do the twice a day thing. I feel like once a day is so long for them to go without food. Or for treats you could try pieces of apples or carrots which are filling but won't cause them to gain weight. Just a thought :D | You're right, once a day is a long time. I've never done other than free feed, ever. So, this was a major adjustment and I felt really bad.....until I saw that they really are ok with it. I've slowly adjusted their feeding time now, to about 6p, so I don't worry about a completely empty stomach when they go to bed. They do get an occasional treat, depending on the dog. Bridget cannot have anything but dog food, no treats at all, anything out of the norm gives her bloody diarrhea. Even healthy snacks like green beans or a tiny dog cookie. A tiny cheerio will set her off, (she's a rescue). That limits what everyone gets because I'm not about to treat everyone while she watches... Bear the 85lb one also has a delicate tummy. Baxter is a goat.. I'm dealing with six personalities and six digestive systems. But, I think I've finally hit the formula and unfortunately it is once a day. Believe me, I miss the days of free feeding, make sure the bowl is full and fuhggetaboutit.
Everyone's dog and everyone's pack is different. Everyone has to find what works for their individual situation, as bizarre as it may sound to everyone else!!!
All for the love of the dog......*sigh* |
