Indoor or Outdoor potty trained I'm curious, is your yorkie indoor trained or outdoor trained or both? Why did you pick your method? I'll start. Indoor, but can go out, I use a grid system, because when we got Harley we lived on the 21st floor, that and I live in Canada, it's too cold to take the dog outside. I wouldn't change anything about it. Even if I had multiple dogs, I love my indoor potty. |

Charlie is 5 months and outdoor trained. We hang bells from the door and have taught him to ring the bells to go out and potty. He does a great job! I chose outdoor because our other dog Annie goes outside and I just never wanted to have the potty in the house. |
Sasha is outdoor trained. When I first got her, it was in December when I got to take her home and it was too cold for me to be taking her outside to potty. The breeder was training her puppies to potty on newspaper so I used that technique for awhile. I then resorted to pee pads once she began tearing up the newspaper. That worked for awhile but like with the newspaper, she began tearing those up to. By this time, it was starting to warm up outside so I began outside training. It took a long time, pretty much a year to be honest before she was completely house trained. She would go to the door but wouldn't bark or let anyone know that she was there so she'd always have an accident right in front of the door. That's when I read about the bell training method. I gave it a shot and she got it down packed in only a few days. I was completely shocked at how quickly she caught on. |
Bella & Harley are outdoors trained. My reason is...I don't want dirty potty pads in my home, they smell and they are nasty IMO...Now if I lived where it snowed and just to cold to go out I probably would consider them but, I live in South Florida, there is no snow and it hardly ever gets below 30 here in the winter so I see no need for them...My babies come to work with me so they are hardly ever home alone for more than 4 hours at a time. Harley is confined in his play yard for his safety and with a potty pad just incase of a accident, he's only 5 1/2 mos old, if I know I will be gone longer like 8 hours or more..my BFF has a Yorkie too and she fursits for us. :D |
Indoor and Outdoor We live in a woodsy, very dark area and I didn't want to take my boys out late at night. I also didn't want my senior citizen father to have to deal with putting on harnesses and getting the dogs out the door every couple of hours. My boys tell me when they have poop because they want that taken care of right away, so it is essentially the same as going outside. Our system works well for us. My boys can hold it when necessary and they know when and where to potty. They don't have problems when we go to other people's homes or public places. |
Outdoor. Didn't want to deal with potty inside the house. I tried with the pad initially because that's what the breeder was doing. But it wasn't working Kody was tearing and chewing them up. I didn't know at the time that they had trays made for the pads:confused:. So when he had his first vet visit which was the very next day - I asked about outside training. I was told it was fine to do so, in the long run it would save me the headache of trying to switch. So that's what we have been doing around the clocke literally. Kody doesn't give us a sign as to when he has to go Potty. So I know to take him once he wakes up, after napping, after meals and before bed - and all times in between. He goes out to pee about every 1.5 hr now. He knows the command Potty and will always pee no matter what. We still have accidents in the house and if caught in the act he is scolded with the word "no" and then put in this crate if it's poo - if it's pee - I will immediately take him outside. I just purchased the bells after learning about them. I've had them hung for a week now, and although I believe he knows what they stand for he has yet to use them consistently. He using them every now and then. I reinforce this method each time I take him out hoping he will get the message soon.:D |
Outdoor...crate and bell trained. Dori has a dog walker for times when we have to leave her home alone longer than 4-5 hours. |
Outdoor. Although the last few days she has had some accidents in the house. My fault clearly though as she did her business by the back door. |
Indoor trained, it Is necessary for us and works for us. I think everyone should do what works for them and not feel the need to make nasty comments about what other people do. |
Indoor pee pad trained. My work hours are unpredicatable & irregular, so it allows my pup to go potty when she needs to. Any yorkie I've ever had has been pad trained. I love it because is makes it so much easier to travel. I can put a pee pad down, on the floor of my car, the floor of a friends bathroom, my kids dorm room & she knows to go on it. I'm on the go alot & my pup goes everywhere with me, other than work and I love the convenience of the portable pads. To the person above who stated that pee pads are dirty & nasty & smelly....I don't whose homes you frequent....but I change my pads frequently & poop is immediately picked up & flushed, morning & night. I use both the washable pads for home & disposable pads for travel (& when I'm slacking on my laundry duties ) |

Outside. They use a doggy door. I am at home all day with them so this method works for us. |
Inside - totally. Since we work, this works best for us. Plus, we don't have a fenced yard. I had another dog before that was outside trained, but I have learned this go round that this is definitely best for me and Sophie. |
Jillie is the only one trained for both. She prefers outside, but uses the pad exclusively if she doesn't have a choice. Eddie goes outside and can hold it forever. I did that for the times they get sick and can't hold it all day long, or the times we travel. It's nice to be able to pull out a pad at the airport and take care of business without having to exit security and find a lawn somewhere. |
Outside totally. I'm home all day for the most part, so it works for us. |

I wish mine used their doggie door more. We have multiple decks and one is 12x12 outside the kitchen, so we chicken wired all around (so they couldn't fall through - we have a pool and it would be extra dangerous if they got loose) - put in a doggie door that opens to an "outhouse" - about a 3x3x4 wooden box (former dog house without the steeped roof - roof replaced with an open/shut lid (for easy cleaning) with 1/4 plexiglass cut out on top for light), potty pads in that...then a door (that can be open/closed) so they can go out on the deck in the spring/summer/fall for fresh air. Which was working great until Gracie just upped and decided she'd start pooping on the deck-bypassing the outhouse! Anyway, blah, blah, I went off in some other direction, which happens alot !!! lol ( I think I'm just proud of the Yorkie's "yard"...lol) So potty pads, if kept 'clean' and changed are great. And yes, they "get it" when you take them places and bring a potty pad. Our new pup was dog door trained so she goes out there "most of the time" but doesn't always make it (yet). As I've said before...could be other foods, but the Royal Canin makes the poo hard and smell free and easy to pick up off the potty pad and flush. |
Winston is outdoor trained, literally from day 1. I do believe he would explode before going potty in the house, he can hold it forever it seems. Although he has never had to as we take him out regularly...if he needs to potty or not. |
Outside, however I am home all day so it works for me also... I have to say I still take her out every couple of hours and for a few walks a day!! |
No wee-wee pads for me. Mine use the great out doors. Occasional accident at the door only when sick. |
Scoober is finally outdoor trained, he was litter box trained then potty pad trained...he would run in from the yard to potty on his pad in the bathroom! Elvis outdoor always Princess outdoor always Now we're all out door here but I want an AKC potty patch for the covered patio now for rainy days I'm tired of hosing off the patio LOL that still counts as outdoor right? |
All outdoor trained. |
Indoor and Outdoor - It depends on the weather. This past winter we had so much snow he had to use the pee pads inside until we could shovel an area. The snow was just too deep. Also if we have bad rains, like a n'oreaster, he uses the pee pads. Now that the weather is finally nice, outside. |
Mine are indoor and outdoor. Jett mostly uses potty pads and Bella now mostly goes outside to potty! |
Favorite the doxie is outdoor all the way, and that's what we are going with for Whit also. I'm a SAHM in Florida so that's our obvious choise. :p |
Has anybody noticed that their pad trained dogs prefer going outside when given the chance? Jillie used to use the pad daily at the beginning of the winter, but now she can go weeks without using it. Fortunately, she still returns to it when she needs to. |

Teddy is really funny. He lived with our breeder until he was 8 months old and was fully outdoor trained. Now he will pee when we go on walks, but he still runs straight for the pad when we come inside. He can hold it for hours if we are out somewhere, but he is a frequent ritual piddler at home: after meals, after naps, after play time. |
Outside trained with a 99% success rate :). Even though our winters can be harsh Sophie prefers to go outside. I stay at home with her and let her out frequently. She will sit by the door until I open it for her. If I'm not here when she needs to go she will go downstairs in the laundry room (where I put a pad) about 1% of the time. She's such a good little girl :)! |
Tibbe is outdoor trained. I think he loves leaving his scent out there for the whole world to smell. lol |
Princess is still a work in progress....she was doing great outside til about Jan. when she would just stop, sit & shiver or try to walk on 3 legs cuz she was so cold...that was with a sweater & winter coat on....so i started the pad training (that she could not grasp in the very beginning), and she's been doing good. just today she finally pooped on the pad (1st time):D, but she's been pooping in the bathroom for quite some time now.:rolleyes::rolleyes: we've been going out more that it's warmer but i still want the pads as a backup as i have health probs that don't always allow me to take her out. and like others, i immediately flush the poop & change the pads frequently, i've never had a prob with the smell, plus i guess if i need to i can always turn on the exhaust fan.;) |
