How often do your adult Yorkies get the DHP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo) vaccine? How often do your adult Yorkies get the DHP vaccine (or part of it...like a single of distemper)? |
Once a year with the parvo given seperately. I choose to continue with the parvo since cases have been showing up in the county over the past couple years, per my vet. |
Well mine are only 2.5 and 1 and they havent had it since their last puppy booster... they will be titered though when the time comes and will only get the shot when the titer is low. |
My vet recommends NOT vaccinating again after the first booster for ANY toy breed. My vet also does not recommend titering. A low titer does not indicate non-immunity and re-vaccinating may not increase the titer level at all. All indications on testing done is that for toy breeds (especially pups well under 10 lbs), lifetime immunity is achieved. |

Awhile back it was going to be only vaccinate when titers are low, but never wait more than three years. We have since switched to no more ever because a low titer doesn't mean no immunity. |
I follow Dr. Dodds - so, no more vaccines for my boys except rabies, as required by law. |

Also, if rabies weren't required by law, would you stop giving that shot as well? I ask because I've always wondered about rabies with these little inside dogs. My girl is never, ever outside without me at the other end of her leash because we don't have a fenced in yard. So the chances of her contracting rabies seems awfully far-fetched. -C |

Vets should explain but many of them make their livings off of shots..so a well educated pet owner should research this topic and make an informed choice. I have changed my opionion on this topic a number of times as I keep doing research. |
We have to vaccinate all dogs in New zealand and take the certificate into the council when registration is due each year otherwise we get fined |
I still take mine in for visits, bloodwork, etc. When I was looking for a vet, I called around and spoke to them first, telling them my feelings on vaccines and asking if the fact that I did not vaccinate would be an issue... yes, some said my dogs had to be vaccinated and I skipped them... I went with one of the vets who understood and respected my opinions. |
what does it mean "when the titer is low"? |
