I personally prefer for mine to be 4 to 6 lbs.Mine are a bit small.Beatrice is barely over 3 lbs and Sebastien is 3.7lbs...although he is only 11 months old.My hope is for him to reach 4.25 lbs. Knowing what I know now, if I was searching for a yorkie I would look for one that would mature around 5 to 5.5lbs. I find we have to be so careful with our "tinies" Beatrice jumped off the couch a year ago and broke her leg. They can't go down the stairs on their own,and when it's cold they don't go outside. However,I would not trade my precious babies for anything.I love them just the way they are :) |
Sophie is right at 3 lbs and so loved, we can't imagine her any other way!:D |
My little one is 9 lbs. |
i wish lexi was 4 lbs so i could carry her in my bag and wouldnt kill myself. but i do anyway. im happy no matter what. |
Sam weighs between 6-7lbs, right now he is at 6.5. To me he is the perfect size, he fits nicely in my purse and is quiet when we go somewhere (regardless if he is allowed or not). He doesnt get heavy but I also take bathroom breaks more when is with me. I was a nervous wreck when he was a baby. I was so afraid I was going to step on him. I love him just the way he is now, brattiness and all:p |

This is from the Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon: History of the Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon "Yorkshire Terriers were given their breed name by 1874, although it had been around since 1870. Originally they were known and shown as Broken Haired Scotch Terriers or Toy Terrier (rough and broken haired). Broken Haired Toy Terrier Almost all of the classes were divided by weight. The classes were for Broken Haired or Rough Scotch Terriers less than 5 lbs. or 6 lbs. and under; Toy Terriers 4 lbs. and under, or 5 lbs. not exceeding 7 lbs., or 6 lbs. and over; or Blue Scotch Terriers under 7 lbs. or 7 lbs. not exceeding 9 lbs. The largest weight class in which they were reported to have been shown was for Broken Haired Scotch Terrier 9 lbs. not exceeding 12 lbs. This record should prove that although there were larger Yorkshires they were not being shown at the dog shows. The record proves that the small size was available for breeding from early days. " I voted 4-7 pounds for safety sake, but I have to admit -- I would love to have a tiny little "under 3 pounder" as I think they are adorable. I know they have special needs, but I would gladly take on the responsibility. I guess that is why I keep having puppy withdrawal. :) |
4-6 lbs |

Small, Medium & SUMO Sized! I have the pleasure of 3 Yorkies, Artie was my first Yorkie he's almost 6 yrs. he is 10 1/2 lbs. the "Sumo" sized one compared to Abigail @ 7 lbs. and Pom-Pom who is their Daughter, she's only 4 1/2 lbs. Of course he was'nt always this Big since he is getting older and was "Fixed" at an older age, he's gained alot of weight recently, but IMO he is an ideal weight b/c he is very strong & sturdy and very Healthy! The other 2 b/c they are smaller are more Accident prone, they are Healthy too, but b/c of their size tend to be more Fragile. Especially around Children, Artie is more outgoing towards them compared to the other 2, they get intimidated by their presence alone. For me anything less than 10 lbs. is too small. I kind of wish the AKC. would change the Weight Standard into seperate Weight Catagories? Toy and Standard, or under 5 lbs. and over 5 lbs.? There is definetely a Size difference w/in the Breed. Besides I get tired of People (Fellow Yorkie Owners & Non-Yorkie Owners) asking me if the little one is a "Teacup" and the other 2 are "Standard Sized Yorkies"? Especially since "Teacups" don't exist? |
I love Buddy to pieces but 16lbs is alot of Yorkie. I would prefer 7-9 lbs in the next one. No way would I be comfortable with anything smaller. Even at 16lbs he looks small to me but he's built like a Boston Terrier and is so heavy to carry. Think of carrying 3 5#bags of sugar! Yep, that's heavy:p |
Calleigh & Patti Both my Yorkies are small. Calleigh is 4 lbs. and Patti is a 3.5 lbs - so I like them around 4-7 lbs. They are both so cute to me! LB |
i'm hoping for 5-7 actually. Sadie's 2.5 at about 4 months and can stand to gain another half pound for her age. i hope for not more than 7 because she's easier to carry around but big enough to function normally around the house |
I have two Yorkies-one is 9 lbs and the other a whopping 19 lbs-variety is the spice of life....the smallest Harley is the main man while Jaxie the larger boy is submissive and acts more like a small dog would-they have made our lives very very interesting....LOL! Harley was very small and would not eat well-so at three months we felt getting another dog would help him -we wanted a "sturdier" dog but boy did we get what we paid for......would not change a thing-we are loved and the boys are great. Personality plus for both of them but they are so unique-absolutely spoiled rotten but healthy and happy. |
I think the 13 plus is the best only because i have an active household and there is less risk of injury. Tho i thnk it would be neat if Ball stayed the size he is now..about 6 lbs..but being he'll be large he can run and lay with everyone safely. And keep up when we go for walks..he already does quarter mile and I'm more tired then he is. |

I really enjoy Couver's size- around 7 lbs. He is small enough to take places, but also sturdy enough to play with the big dogs :D |
I love alllll sizes of yorkies!! We had Bandit who was 4 lbs..but I thought he was a little too small for my lifestyle. We have Tucker who is 14 lbs, who is AWESOME and sturdy, which I LOVE. But I think my most ideal weight was Maddie, who was 7 lbs. She was the perfect amount of dainty and sturdy. They're all perfect though! |
My Sasha is about 3.5lbs (last the breeder told me, I get her on Tuesday and she'll be going to the vet on Thursday, so I'll know then for sure!) and she's 6 months old, so I don't think she'll get much bigger, if at all. That's just fine with me! My friend's yorkie is 7lbs and he looks so much tinier than that! I wouldn't mind up to 7lbs... My home is just better suited for a smaller breed. |
I like that I can carry mine around. they are 4.5 and 5 lbs. I think that any bigger I would not be able to carry the both of them if I had to pick them up quickly for any reason while we were out and about. |
Jasmine is smaller than we thought she would be. We were told she would be at least 5 pounds, but she just didn't make it. Prissy, our toy poodle, is 6 pounds and we have found that we have not had to worry about her as much as we have had to about Jasmine because of her weight. We worry about her breaking a bone a lot. We did go ahead and take out insurance on her and of course have it on Prissy too. I had a tiny Chi before that lived to be 16 and I didn't worry as much about her as I do Jasmine. It may be because, here you have this tiny fragile baby that runs around like a tazmania devil with courage of a lion and an attitude of a stubborn jackass, that looks at me with eyes of a doe and then the next second rears up on her hind legs like a galloping horse. I mean with a split personality like that ........... I HAVE to worry about her.............what's a mommy to do. |
I voted for the 4-7 lb. range. I wouldn't want the dog to be less. They seem so fragile because of their small size anyway. The breeder and I have been trying to guesstimate what my the two puppies in the litter will be. I'm hoping mine will actually be around 6 lbs. just for health and safety reasons. |
I feel left out b/c i didn't get to vote in time. So here's my vote, i say 8-12lbs. I wouldn't want any animal that's so small you can feel ribs. My Ella's 9lbs. and perfect. =] |
I like up to seven pound, in standard range. :) Though as pet, I prefer the smaller because of back problem. Terry was big boy and I couldn't pick him up. |
First of all i want to say I love both of my girls with all my heart no matter what size I wouldn't trade them for anything BUT they were both estimated to be max 5 pounds full grown. Gracie i am certain is tipping the scales at 9 pounds and Bristol at 8 months is likely 7 ish. I used to weigh them routinely but it just doesn't matter anymore as long as they are healthy. Having said that when we looked for puppies we didn't want the micro tiny but we did want UNDER 5 pounds and that is still what I would have preferred. Oh well that isn't the case but I am blessed with two healthy girls that I adore! |

I love my baby's size (5.5lbs) but I think a bigger yorkie would be more durable regarding tracheas and anesthesia. |

I voted 4-7 as it's truer to standard. However, I would say that after having Bella-Boo topping out at 11-12 lbs, Abby at 9-10 lbs and Phoebe as a tight 7 lber...I do like the bigger Yorkie. |
I love my boys just the way they are (7.5 and 8 pounds), but 6 to 6.5 pounds was a perfect weight -- not too small for me, but still light enough to easily tuck under my arm. |
