Hyper or mellow (a poll) My experience with Yorkies is that they are mostly mellow little guys. Yes, there's the crazy first year where they chew up everything that they're not peeing on, and sometimes both, but overall mine have been even-tempered to mellow. Lately, though, I've spoken with several people who have said their Yorkies are crazy hyper to the point of being unmanageable. I've run across a couple people who were considering giving theirs up because they couldn't control them. They said they wished they'd researched the breed more before they got one. Hence this poll. I'm trying to see if my experience is typical or atypical. |
Piper is a little hyper but she is only 10 months old. On the whole she is quite manageable but at times she doesn't come when called. We are working on that. I haven't had a puppy for many years and it was a matter of me adjusting to a high energy puppy. I was use to my 13 year old male teapot that took everything slow and steady. |
I put even-tempered, which they are, even crossing over to slightly lazy sometimes. What I find about this breed is how needy they are, like having toddlers is what I compare it to. Of course, this may just be mine and I have made them this way, but this is what I always tell people that say they want a yorkie. I don't mind this trait, but I think people who are gone alot, or just don't have much time might not find this a desirable trait when looking for the right pet. |
At 2 1/2, I think Joey is very mellow, he gets excited when we are having company, and he greets guests enthusiastically, but then mellows out. However, if the doorbell rings and it's a stranger, he is a maniac. Sometimes I think instead of taking him for a walk, I should just ring the door bell a couple of times, because he will run up and down the stairs several times back and forth running all over the house barking his head off. |
very even tempered!! both my girls are so funny.. they can be all crazy & hyper, zoomin' around playin'!!! :jump28ib: then they are chillen' & sleepin', all mellow & calm!! :asleep: they are little drama queens:flirt: & too smart for their own good  .. but are really sweet & lil angels 99% of the time! :angel2: they are both VERY smart, know a ton of tricks, & quick to learn new things.. but, they definitely have their lil stinker butt moments, when they are being lazy & they don't wanna do what i ask!! :eyebrow2: they tease, play, & pick on each other..:tongue3: BUT, they LOVE each other so SO much & are always cuddling together & giving kisses!! :luv: i would DEFINITELY say they are EVEN tempered!!!!! well balanced 'lil princesses!!!! :dreaming: HAHA!! they are NOT spoiled just well taken care of!! :D |
i DO have to add.. that i think, for us, having 2 makes them more 'even tempered'!! ;) they play with each other, sleep with each other, etc. etc. etc. they are a GREAT balance to one another!!! :) |
My Abby Abby is very even tempered and she is only 9 months old! She only barks when the doorbell goes off, same as your dog above. She lays in the sun (must be nice!) but has trouble coming when I call her inside away from the sun. Is this a typical Yorkie trait? She is quite a lapdog, which I hope other Yorkies are as well :) I am surprised to hear some Yorkies are so hyper! |
Daisy Mae My Daisy is one of those very hyper, but manageable yorkies (at times haha.) She is constantly wanting to play, running around everywhere, & barking more than I like her to. She is left alone all day from 8-4, so I really do think that has something to do with it. She does calm down when she gets tired and if I am sitting on the couch, she is definitely in my lap chewing a rawhide or playing with one of her toys. I wouldn't trade her in for anything in the world though! She makes me laugh & keeps me on my toes at all times. I tell her right now that she is going through her terrible two's!!!:) |
I have two very different personalities. Snickers is very even-tempered, and only gets hyper-crazy when he's playing with Baxter. Baxter on the other hand, is a bit hyper when he doesn't get attention. Otherwise, he is easy-going. And both boys play like little ruffians around the house. When they get the zoomies, they are very rowdy. So I say "hyper but manageable". :aimeeyork |
Toby is hyper but manageable. He plays well with the maltese gals but does not enjoy the company of other people or other dogs. But with three obedience classes, we have managed to train him to not be hyper hyper or aggressive. He's smart as a whip and very loving with me and the hubby. We adopted him from the "second" owner at six months old and he has come a long way. I wouldn't trade him for the world!!!! I love him just the way he is! I think the malts have toned him down a bit though! :p |
My Bingo get's very hyper when someone comes home or when someone pass's the window he sits on but most of the time he is very mellow he lays around the house eats and give's lots of love and kisses my Minnie is to small to tell but it looks like she is going to be super hyper i hope she is alittle bit of both like Bingo plus he likes to take shoes and socks off of babys feet when they are in there carrage or being held but he kisses them he dont bite thank god he isnt a biter... |
I put even tempered... Sapphire is very calm... And lazy... MOST of the time... :p Sometimes, though, she will go CRAZY!!!! Run and zoom around the house with her play growl begging to be chased. Or when her cousins are at my grandma's house for a puppy party, she plays rough with Max. |
Layla is really easy going- she has a few hours at night where she plays hard- but this in no way makes her unmanageable- just fun to be with :) I am wondering if these people who you were talking to didn't put their foot down at first with their pup (because um... Yorkies ARE the cutest puppy) and now they have a dog who is in control? |
I put that Reuger is even-tempered. He's pretty laid back and very easy to get along with. He's certainly a Mama's boy!!! He loves to be held and cuddled!! Now on the other hand, we just got a little female. She's only 14 weeks old and I can already tell that she's got a little more get-up-and-go. She's definitely going to keep us on our toes!!!! Hopefully she'll mellow out as she ages. Personally, I think that dogs take on your personality. |
I forgot to mention he is very hyper when he knows he is about to go outside he cough's excessivly and he pulls me down the street that is when he is at his most hyper moment. |
Daisy was pretty hyper for the first couple of years but since she turned 5 years old she is much calmer. She cuddles and snuggles more than ever and goes into the bedroom alone to sleep on the bed in the evening. I am really loving how much calmer she is now. She will actually follow me out to the car and jump in instead of running away as soon as the gate is opened. Teddy has always been laid back. |
My girls are pretty mellow most of the time. But once in a while they get in crazy mode and get hyper. But they just want to play with each other and just have fun. I think some people don't give their dogs enough play time and enough exercise to stimulate their minds and drain their energy. No matter how busy we are, we make sure our girls get enough exercise. In the winter time, they get 1 hr of treadmill time a day. |
My little Bella will be a year old in May and she is a little ball of energy and I love it! She is a little sleepy head the majority of the day while I am at school, so by the time I come home she has TONS of energy! I plan to get her a companion after I graduate so they can run out each other's energy...because she keeps her mommy pooped  |
I should be good at this poll since I have so many:rolleyes::p I would say mellow, puppies are going to be a little crazy at first, but it seems when they turn around a year old they calm down a bunch. I only have one hyper one, and he is the one I took in as a resuce, my kids called him prozac:D |
I put that Zoe is very even tempered but thought I would add that she does get excited if we go somewhere and she's always happy to see people or other dogs and then people sometimes think she's crazy hyper but other than those times, she's really laid back. |
I put that Cash is hyper, but manageable. He used to be uncontrollable and I also thought I would have to give him up. It was really heartbreaking for me... here is this adorable pup that I love so much, but he is so naughty that I start thinking he is better off somewhere where people can control him. Persevering, I paid a lot of money to clicker train him and have never looked back. Now he knows a bunch of tricks, we have a great relationship and he is manageable. Coming in at over 2 years, he is now still hyper and crazy sometimes, but he is manageable (at least by me:rolleyes:). I think people need to realize that getting a dog is like getting married. You don't simply give up if things go bad. You have to work at it to make it work and if you do... you will never, ever be sorry.:) |

And tumismom, an hour on the treadmill a day? That's awesome. You must have super yorkies. Overall, it's very encouraging to see how many of us call our pups even-tempered. |
I put that Twinkle is 'hyper but manageable', although I think she's more 'energetic' than hyper:) she's only 8 months which I guess has a lot to do with it. She would chase a ball or run around in the garden all day if I let her....I think she picks up on the energy of my children who are always on the go! I love her nutty personality - wouldnt change it for the world!:D xxx |
Bailey is very hyper but manageable! I find that he is the most hyper when he wants my attention... He'll be 5 year's old in May and he's still all puppy!!! :) |
Millie is only hyper when her cousins come over and she's torturing them. :) |
Oliver and Brooklyn, even as pups have never been hyper or out of control! They are not yappers either. They are very controllable :D |
Each of my furkids (5) are different. My oldest (16) is pretty even tempered except when you get in his face (he don't like that). My 8, 7 & 2 year olds are very even tempered. And my newest 4 month old (too early to tell). :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Even tempered Beatrice is now almost 18 months old and she is very mellow. It's only the last 3 or 4 months that she's started to play more forcefully and she gets pretty wound up when she plays now,I love it because when we got her at 9 months of age she didn't play at all.She was one of those timid types, but she's becoming more bold and confident now. Next week we are bringing home a little half-brother ,we are calling him Sebastien. He is very quiet, compared to his 2 brother. This is why we chose him over the other 2.We felt that he and Beatrice would compliment each other.:p |
Kassie is a lazy sloth unless she goes on a mission that she wants a treat . Then she will stand and squeak at the treat door until you give in and get her one. Kenji was extremely hyper and had major seperation anxiety to add to it. He never sat still and had energy plus right up until he passed at 18yrs old. |
my boy is very even tempered and very well behaved. yes he does get excited and he does like to play. I definalty believe this is where discipline and good training comes in. For the ones who want to give up their dogs because they are very hyper, need to realize any animal will need good training and discipline or any animal of any breed can get out of control. :D Maybe if they watch Caesar or Victoria they would see how dogs are out of control. And who do they say who's FAULT it is...LOL ;) |
