Probiotics I'm having a hard time picking one because of concerns over ingredients. What do you use? If you use a product that is meant for humans, did your vet approve it? |
I've used Fast Track before and wasn't impressed. Currently we are using Wysong's, generally I trust their products. My vet recommends the Forti Flora, but I think it's the one most vets promote, being a Purina product |
This is what our nutritionist recommended- And i totally trust her- so far it has been great- Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist |
|
Which ingredients are you questioning? |
I give mine lactobacillus. Which is a probiotic. I buy it at the pharmacy & use a pill splitter to cut the pills into quarters. I put a quarter tablet in their wet food at dinner time. It is inexpensive, about $10.00 and lasts a couple of months. My vet had me give it to Bailey, who was having a lot of intestinal upsets. It keeps them both healthy & they rarely get tummy upsets or diarrhea when taking it. |
Fortiflora We have given Fortiflora when Beatrice came off anti-biotics.It was recommended by our vet.:p |
Please explain What is it and what is it for? |

The inclusion of Enterococcus faecium in 12 products was interesting, considering the increasing concern being expressed about the use of enterococci as probiotics because of their pathogenic potential and relatively high level of antimicrobial resistance (7,8,9). Evaluation of deficiencies in labeling of commercial probiotics The whole article is a good read. I'm a bit concerned because it seems most of the pet products contain this and Metronidazole is an anti-microbial. It can also be pathogenic? Maybe this only applies to humans? They did look at human and animals products though. I am also being cautious because quite a few products are mislabeled and don't have enough of anything in them to be any good. I trust Nutramax on this issue but not with the inclusion of this ingredient. What do you think? |
Probiotics and Medical Nutrition Therapy That link contains another good article that you will enjoy and find interesting... I use VSL#3 because it has a significant amount of research backing its claims. This article includes info on that. Not only do I give it to Miko for his liver problems (history of HE), but also for his GI issues...Of course, he only gets a fraction of the recommended dose for humans (adults/children)... If you don't feel comfortable with the inclusion of that strain, then I would try to find a different one. I would probably stay away from that for now, at least until there's more research if you don't feel comfortable. None of the probiotics I've used have contained that strain, so I can't tell you personally about its effects. There's a little bit of info on its effects in the article above but not much...Also, if you scroll to the bottom, there are some charts. I know I'm probably a skeptic, but I don't trust a lot of pet products as much unless they have research backing them... |

My two or three top veterinary probiotic choices contain this, so I am a bit frustrated. Then there is Pet Flora that won't even tell you what strains it contains. I want to use VSL but the vet said something about only using veterinary products for this in passing. I guess I have to ask her why. Marci, the one you posted looks interesting but what are the affects of supplementing with lipase and amylase? The body doesn't stop producing its own, does it? |

Lady needs digestive enzymes also because she is diabetic and her pancreas doesn't work properly. Not only doesn't it make insulin, diabetics are prone to pancreatitis. The Animal Essentials product has both probiotics and plant enzymes. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who uses this product. |
I'm at work and trying to recall the name of the one I used to use for Marcel - I believe it was Michaels Probiotic - and it was from a really good health food store here in Phoenix - it was kept refrigerated (as many need to be). They had a ton to choose from, but I liked this one the best. I bought this one *before* I had made contact w/ Susan Davis - if I had waited, I probably would have purchased hers as well as it has guaranteed potency and the FOS. (her probio doesn't have enzymes does it, Crystal?) This is a great site for learning about strains: Probiotics & Prebiotics - Acidophilus, Bifidobacteria, Align, Culturelle, VSL#3 You can see that Align is very good for IBS (and others). Here are some more that are generally considered better quality: The Environmental Illness Resource - Treatment - Nutritional Supplements - Probiotics & Prebiotics |

Lady is diabetic, though, so her pancreas needs extra support since it doesn't produce insulin and is prone to pancreatitis. I would be interested in your opinion on it, though. I recently switched to it after a holistic vet recommended it to a member on another forum. |

We just started using Priobiots by AskAriel nutritionist Susan Davis. |
I was just talking to Ellie's vet and she did say that human products shouldn't be used. She read it in an article (I guess it is new research). It has something to do with them not working on humans and dogs... They need their own. That means VSL #3 is out for us and that's the one I wanted to use. :( |
I use Activa yogurt |

I can get fat free maybe but I think the calcium can set the pancreas off. It is more of an issue in Ellie's case because high bile acids can cause pancreatitis because I guess they are full of calcium and it irritates the pancreas. I wasn't sure if I should add to the load on the pancreas but I might just try because her numbers were so good...at least until I pick a product. |
