Do You Trim Your Yorkies Nails? I can't do it! I just can't trim nails! So, I have either the groomer or the vet trim them for me. Between trims, Jazzie, Jolie & Jen ends up with "Wolverine" nails. I know it's time to get them trimmed when I hear the click, click, click on my tiled floor. Are you brave enough and have the cofidence to trim nails? If you do, I bow down to you!:notworthy :notworthy :notworthy |
I was cutting them but he is such a turd about it and I was affraid to hurt him so I ended up cutting so little off it was like I wasn't doing any good any way! LOL So started taking him to the vet to do it. ;) |
I tried doing it a few times. I have trimmed my cats nails for years, never a problem. But with Gracie, no matter how careful I was she ended up a bloody mess. Even my vet had problems, says she has a long quick. So, I finally gave up and decided to let the groomer do it. We are all much happier, and the groomer has never had a problem with Gracie's nails bleeding! |
I do mine...at first I made some mistakes but I kept the quik stop handy...lol I can do it in about a minute per dog now...lol |

Wanna give a class on how to trim nails? Must have photos and videos! LOL! I still wouldn't try! Pwwawk! Pwawk! (that supposed to be chicken sounds).:chicken: :chicken: |
I trim my lil ones nails...she knows to lay still in my lap and I just keep a closeful watch on the white in the middle...I keep quik stop right next to me just in case...She has one white nail...(that's an easy one) but the rest are just trim a lil bit at a time..... |

Well technically, I will hold them and sweet talk, while my S.O does the actual clipping:D. We do this bi weekly and it takes about a min or 2 with each pup:) |
Yep I trim them myself, although it doesn't need doing that often as their walks wear them down. Just get them calm sitting on your knee or next to you and then what you can do is if you shine torch under the black ones you will be able to see where the 'quick' is, thats where you don't want to cut past. Just do a little bit at a time. Keep some quick stop or flour close by just in case you do cut a little bit too much. |
Yes i do, they dont like it, and i hate forcing them into anything, but it's one of those things that have to be done. |
Mine won't let me. |

hmmm...wonder how these work? |
I voted "yes" although I technically don't cut - I file!!! I have a doggie dremmel so there is no chance of cutting too short and causing them to bleed. And, it is just as quick as cutting. The girls both still hate it and need to be bundled in a blanket and held, but they are mostly quiet with a little whining where for actual cutting, you would think we were killing them!!!! I've never heard a pup scream before, but that is exactly what they did!!!!!!!!!!! |

I am too scared too, so i let groomer do them, Apollo's get soo long and they are realy thick ! Vet charges $12.00 each for 1 Dog:eek: |
I do it myself for both my dogs. Laney used to hate it so I took her to the groomers one time. She flipped out! She did not like groomer at all. From then on she has happily let me cut her nails. Slade will holler and carry on, but he holds pretty still. Just has to put up a vocal protest to let me know he's not happy. |
I haven't tried it yet, but am scared to think that I would cut too short. I have taken him to a groomer once for a bath and my vet has also cut his nails during puppy check visits. I plan to keep his hair long so I even bought an electric trimmer for his ears (and even though he shakes like there is no tomorrow I was able to get his ears done myself. I can't tell you how proud of myself I was). Once when I took him to the groomer for a bath she also shaved the bottom of his feet and around his private area. So I have been thinking that I could probably do all the necessary hair trimming myself. That only leaves the nails and the teeth. I read the prior posts and noted some said clear nails and some black. Mine has all black nails (I just checked). What does that mean? How would I know how short to clip them? :questione Yikes, can I be woman enough to do itself? That is the question! With your help maybe I will be successful! |
On the white nails you can see the quick. On black nail you can not. So it's very easy to cut the quick. I cut my girls nails and all the neighbors too. LOL |

My 3 all lay on their backs on the couch and lay still while I cut nails. Maggie came to us when she was 18 mos old and she learned to do it. The other 2 learned as puppies. |
I did it! I did it! Well, poor Kirby (not a yorkie) is having a rough weekend. Yesterday I gave him a bath before heading out to the groomer to have his nails trimmed. He was looking so sad and forlorn, and he hates going there, so I ran downstairs, dug out my nail trimmers (I have several pair, but always lost my nerve)and gave it a shot. He let me. I swear he was saying "thank you". So, feeling all brave...I went for Bernie's nails next. He did pretty well, even rolled over and exposed his belly half way through (no Bernie, it's not belly scratchin' time):) Then, onto Ginger. You would have thought I was KILLING her. Mind you, this dog is used to me messin' with her and groomin' her, but she did not want any part of my cutting her nails. Fortunately, I was feeling confident, so I kept at it. Now, I'm eyeing up Fun Kitty. LOL |
i take them to the groomer |
I am definitely a chicken when it comes to nails both for Izzy and my cats...especially Iz since her little toys are so small I can't even see the quick to watch out for it. For me it's worth it for either the groomer or vet to do it. |
no, I am a scaredy cat when it comes to cutting her toenails ... what if i hurt her????? |
:eyetearss My hubby is 6 ft.2" tall- and I'm 5ft 3" holding an almost 4# Yorkie trying to cut nails...BOY... Hubby sweating profusely, sweat dripping off forhead, me trying to keep the 4# wigglebutt still so hubby can clip the tiny nails... it was the hardest time either one of us have had with any of our present or past furbutts!! We had a 160# Akita that was a dream compared to Gus and all our Himmies throughout the years!! After we finally finished we looked at each other and couldn't stop laughing!!:tongue012 Guess we'll try the groomer from now on!! :D |
after i bathe rocky and blow dry him i normally sit on the sofa and lay him on his back paws in the air and clip away i dont clip to much because im scared to cut the quick but i cut enough his back paws are always more shorter than the back not sure why |
I wet the paws (easier to find the nails among all that hair) and S.O. holds while I trim. they usually hold still, but if they get antsy, S.O. also provides a fingerload of peanut butter for diversion :D To those who use the doggie dremel drills... how do you know you won't drill down to the quick? And does the drill leave you with a nice smooth finish, like a nail file? I don't have the patience to file after clipping, but wish I did because the nails are rough until we go for a walk. the drills sound ideal, but scary! T |
I put the "Too scared" option because I can't trim Lacy's nails myself. It's not that I'm scared because I can trim nails fine. Lacy struggles way too much though so I will hold her while a groomer trims them for me. |
Lacy is so cute in her outfits, I enjoyed watching your avatar!. I was wondering if her hair gets tangled underneath them,or do you keep her short? My Tucker gets snarly pretty quick from just a day in his little sweater. (and I'm not sure why, but he reminds me of Robert Goulet in it!) Teresa |
