Filters? Do I need them? What else? Help! I'm so close to ordering my Nikon D90 (either tomorrow or next week). :D I'm trying to pick out everything I want/need to order now and I feel like I know nothing. :p Do I need filters? How many? What kind? Here's what I'm ordering from Amazon so far: Nikon D90 w/ 18-105mm kit lens Nikon 70-300mm lens Case Tripod SB-400 flash Diffuser Wireless remote 16Gb HDSC card Card reader Cleaning kit Is there anything else I need to start out with? |
Filters! To protect your glass. Here is one post I did before, but I'll show you exactly what you need.... You'll want a 67mm UV Protection Filter , like this one (or any generic 67mm UV filter) for your 18-105mm. If your 70-300 is this one: Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor, then the 67mm will also fit that lens :), yay! If it's the non-VR, then I think you might need a 52mm filter. Lastly, it's nice to get an extra battery at some point, bc then when your battery runs down, you can charge one while using the other....but no hurry on that, ya know? So excited for you! |
You will have lots of fun with the new camera! Filters will protect the glass for sure although I don't use them...shame on me! |

I'm confused because it says this lens is frequently bought with a 52mm filter, but further down it says this lens accepts 62mm filters. Huh? So do I need the 52mm or the 62mm? I just marked the 67mm you linked to order for the kit lens. I'm going back now to look at an extra battery - great idea on that!! That should pretty much do it then? I hope so - the $$$ added up fast on this purchase. :p |

The only filter you really "need" is a UV filter that will protect your lens (you know, from those little Yorkie tongues, LOL :p) Any other filters,(diffusers, warming, cooling, etc) you can pretty much do all in software, such as Photoshop or the Nikon software that comes with the cam. If you have USB port on your computer, its really not necessary to get a card reader, as the camera will connect directly to your computer and upload the pics that way. Just thought I would throw that out there in case you didn't know, but maybe you already know that, in which case, ignore my babbling, lol :D Can't wait to hear what you think of the camera!! |
Agree with AprilLove that UV filter is the one you need to protect your lenses. Here's a link describing different kind of filters - Photographic filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I cannot live without my UV filters and circular polarizer filters (CPL) because I love outdoor shooting. :) |

I was hoping my tax refund would arrive today, but it looks like it'll be next week before it gets here and I can finally order this camera. |
