Note to self: Don't ever do this while cooking

What is your worst food disaster?

While I'm glad to say I haven't had that many disasters, I do remember as a child, thinking boiling water would take too long to boil eggs so I though I would nuke them.

Anyway just now I realized when I made sake (salmon) poke too salty, to add more tomato. BAD idea. The tomato leaked out water and made the poke look not only yucky but taste bland as well.

Last week I wanted to make my signature pickles. The market I went to didn't have Persian cukes, so I bought what they had. End result is NOT the same sadly. I thought I could fix it by adding more vinegar to the jar, um NO! Hmmmm.

capt_noonie 02-20-2013 10:18 PM

Ok I just remembered. When I was about 10 or 12, my cousin and I wanted to make Rice Krispie treats. We didn't have marshmallows so we thought maple syrup would be just as good. Needless to say it didn't really work.

kjc 02-20-2013 10:18 PM

Walmart has a microwave egg cooker... works great, but don't ask me to explain how, lol. Takes about 15 minutes for 4 eggs.

For oversalting disasters, add potatoes, they will absorb the salt and stay in a form that you can still remove from the pot.

Can't help with the pickles, other than to help eat them, lol!

capt_noonie 02-20-2013 10:21 PM

Oh my! For 15 mins it'd be just better to boil eggs outright! Right?

Verbena 02-21-2013 05:08 AM

I cooked eggs in the microwave once. . . .rubber.. . . Now the only thing I use the microwave for is either warming up a plate of food with multiple items on it, , like turkey dinner. Or sticking food in it so the cats do not get at it ;)

We hide food in the microwave from our cat too

I put a whisked egg in a bowl with a bit of water and put it in the microwave to cook for Uni (didn't want to use a pan and oil for her). It actually cooked very well. I nuked it for about 30 secs then stirred and kept doing it until it was cooked through. It actually came out very much like this Korean steamed egg dish thing that I really like that I order with Korean bbq. :D

Forgot to mention last night, when I put the eggs in the microwave as a kid, they were still in their shells.

As for oversalting my poke, I put too much soy sauce, and I don't think potato would be good in poke too LOL :p

My mother had a recipe for frosted brownies that we all loved. I was a young girl - probably 12 or 13 and wanted to make it myself. I had no trouble making the brownies and as they were cooling I mixed up the frosting according to her recipe. . . which called for 1/4 cup coffee. . . bet you can guess what happened as we all sat down to take a bite. It was kind of crunchy!!!

One of my fav dishes as a kid was Jamaica's national dish Ackee and Saltfish. The fish used is cod, cured in salt, so needless to say you can't eat it like that. You either soak overnight, or boil....no so much as to remove all the salt though.
Well here's me about 14yrs old...I decide i'm gonna make momma's signature dish for the family one Sunday morning....did I remember to soak the fish....um no...was it hella salty....hell YEA! And you can't add potatoes to kill the salt, it the garbage it went!
Come next Sunday, Jacqui tries again, this time she decides to boil the saltfish.....um don't think I was supposed to boil it for two hours....boiled the salt right off it! Talk about no taste.....gross!!!!
I've since learned how to cook it properly....now my daughter is doing the exact same things I did, except she is now 28yrs old! LOL!

How about overcooked pasta - I was probably 14 years old and my oldest brother came home from college with his friend (whom I was secretly crushing on) and mom was working - she started dinner and asked me to finish - she had the sauce in the crockpot and all I needed to do was cook the pasta and add to the sauce. Needless to say, I got sidetracked doing something and the pasta cooked for about 15 minutes or twice as long as it should have cooked - I just went ahead and added it to the sauce - it was the most "gummy-like" pasta I've ever had. Have never over cooked my pasta since that day.

Scrambled eggs in the microwave are pretty good.

I've done undercooked pasta as a kid too. As soon as the spaghetti was "soft" in the pot i thought they were done. Drained them and put sauce on it and they were so hard still. For some reason I still tried to eat it. LOL!

my2boyz 02-23-2013 05:51 PM

Well, this was my husband's and not mine but I can tell you that trying to make pancakes stuffed with peanut butter and jelly after going out for the night isn't really a good idea! lol!

Do tell, what is lutefish???

rubynrosie 02-23-2013 08:24 PM

Lol honestly Jacqui im sure the dish you were talking about is way more flavorful...lutefisk is a scandanavian dish...dried cod soaked in lye...sounds gross..I just remember my mom soaks it for a certain amount of time in water to thaw it and then bakes it...if you soak it too long no flavor...if you bake it too long it turns to jelly. Very few people like it just mainly old timers of scandanavian descent....my mom makes it for thanksgiving christmas easter and I always have to have a bit w melted butter...

Sorry, this does not sound very appetizing.....soaked in lye... it does sound gross, sorry not trying to insult, or offend....But Ackee and Saltfish is amazing, at least Jamaican's or those of West Indian decent seem to think so.
Is lutefisk seasoned with anything?

DvlshAngel985 02-23-2013 08:58 PM

I was home alone, and decided I wanted tostadas with fresh frijoles fritos. (Refried beans) My mom has always been a health nut, so instead of making them in lard as is traditional, my mom taught us to use a little bit of olive oil, you just throw in a dried chile and it adds a very nice flavor. I put in the oil and let it warm up before putting in the chile. Something happened in another room, and I left the kitchen to go check it out. I forgot all about being hungry and went to watch tv. By the time I remembered the oil had completely burned off. Or so I thought. When I moved my small pot, the remains oil caught on fire! I didn't know about needing to smother oil fires. Instead, I put it under running water. *poof*

Lmao. Jacqui...you could never offend me!!! :) jamaican food...or at least the versions I have had is quite flavorful....nummy...scandanavian food...MOST people find very bland but its what I grew up on..basically meat and potatoes comfort food..the cod cured in salt just reminded me of lutefisk as it too is cod...some people will make a cream base and pour over it...I just use melted butter. :) so what other ingredients are in this ackee and saltfish

There's this Chinese duck egg thing called Thousand Year Old Egg. It's soaked in tea and lye and it's somehow semi solid. The "white" is clear yet dark like an obsidian stone and texture like firm jello, the yolk is creamy soft and differing colors of gray. It sounds gross, and even Andrew Zimmern couldn't get a bite down when he traveled to HK, but I love it! I've eaten it since I was a kid, and it's usually served in "juk" (congee/rice porridge) with ground pork, ginger, scallions, sesame oil, and soy sauce. :) But I love it plain with just a bit of salt.

OOPS! Now unless they specifically tell us in school that oil fires need to be smothered, how would you know? They teach us stop, drop and roll, but not about what happens in the kitchen! I'm lucky I never caught anything on fire in the kitchen growing up. It was just me and my brother as pre teens. But once my bro put an Arby's sandwich with the foil wrapper in the microwave. He had know idea it would catch fire. Good thing I was nearby and stopped the timer.

Would you be as understanding if I told you it happened a few months ago, and Kaji was the distraction in another room? What if I told you I had seem those farmers insurance commercials that says "smother an oil fire"? The worst part is... Instead of putting out the fire, I was tempted to take a pic with my phone. I came to my senses and took care of it obviously.

Its actually a fruit that grows on trees.....yellow and very soft, almost no real flavor, until you add all your other ingredients. My mother brought some up from Jamaica and told me how to cook it, and warned me about not cooking it properly.....naw man.... I'll buy canned..won't poison myself that way..
When the hurricane hit J.A. ackee was scarce.....so expensive to buy, but usually about five dollars a tin/can.
If picked too soon they are poisonous as well...they have a brown shell, with the fruit inside.

I'm infamous for my cooking blunders among my friends! LOL

So I was like 12 and was going to make a chocolate cake for my grandparents house. The recipe called for a cup of strong coffee. I didn't know it meant brewed coffee, so I took out the coffee grounds and measured out a cup and dumped it in. Luckily I told my Mom that the recipe was weird and what I did and she took it out of the oven and threw it away! HAHA I'd have made a lot of jittery people that day!

I burnt a boiled dinner, literally! The ham stuck to the bottom of the pan (that was FULL of water) and burnt! LOL

Made french toast mix when I was young and didn't know I could reuse the batter another time, so I made 3 loaves of french toast and invited everyone we knew to come for breakfast! LOL

there are soooo many more stories!

I was trying to boil a pot of water and it would not boil, like 30 mins later, still nothing. I didn't get it at all. I was sooooo irritated that I thought I'd start over and dumped out all the water and got new water! LOL Come to find out there was a switch on my stovetop that made the heating element bigger for larger pans. My friend turned it on and lo and behold, the water boiled! LOL Now the saddest part of this story. I lived in my own condo for about a year at that point with apparently no clue how to use the stove. This only happened maybe 5 years ago... which put me at 31 years old!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Do not attempt to make mixed frozen drinks in a food processor when you don't have a blender. YEAH... mudslides all over the ceiling, cabinets, counters, floor!!

Lastly I tried to make oatmeal cookies one time when I was kid. They were coming out not wet enough and I showed my mom and she thought she would add a bit of milk to them, so she did and walked away, but they were still too dry, so I added more and more and more until I could pratically pour them on the baking sheet. I baked them and they were soooo horrible my brothers and parents were spitting them out and calling them piddle puddle cookies!

Oh boy.... Im almost embarrassed posting this!
