***A Little Salt In Your Coffee????????**** :cup: I knew better but still couldn't pass up buying a fancy coffee at 1/2 price - thinking how bad can it be? BAD!!!!! Tastes old, pretty bitter, no matter what kind of water I use, etc. I remembered my old boss who did her medical residency in Louisiana used to use salt & chicory in coffee she brewed and decided to try some again this morning as it has literally been years since I'd used it. I even used water straight out of the tap to make the test more exacting. I put about 20 or more grains on top of my grounds and started the coffeemaker for 6 cups. The coffee was pretty rich, smooth and lost much of its bitter taste!!! Think it is the placebo effect? If you will Google the subject you will see that the salt actually makes some chemical changes, etc., that take the bitter edge off coffee. The link below is one of the hits: A pinch of salt for your coffee, Sir? Khymos Now I usually like the slight bitterness of high-quality, rich-tasting coffee but this 1/2 price coffee's bitterness is not usual and is - bad! No more 1/2 price coffee for me, but until then, I'm brewing with some salt rather than toss it. Made me wonder who else brews coffee using bits of things such as salt or cinnamon, etc. - and what you use? What interesting things do you always or occasionally add to your coffee for brewing? |
nothing just good old folgers |

Me too!! I've had coffee with a pinch of cinnamon in with the grounds. Not bad. Years ago I remember someone saying they put eggshells in the coffee!! |
I had an aunt who used to put eggshells in her coffee grounds before brewing. Wonder what chemical changes that was supposed to make? Her coffee was really good. |
Maybe the calcium from the eggshells? Or maybe the shells absorb any bitterness? |

friends use the salt and cinnamon together and I absolutely love it-makes such a difference. |
I've never been brave enough to use salt and cinnamon but now I'm going to try it! I loved the change that tad of salt made to this lousy coffee I bought. |
Salt? Thanks for sharing...I'll try it tomorrow...I've been working my way painfully through a "sale" coffee myself :) |
I remember liking even medical office coffee back in the day when the salt was added but had forgotten it until someone said something about salt on TV this morning as I was starting to make coffee. So I remembered our office coffee and added those grains and was so surprised at how different that sale coffee tasted. Wonder if it works for brewing tea? Sometimes I get my tea too bitter and have to add a lot of sugar! |
How much salt do you add? |
I made 6 cups so I put what looked to be about 20 - 30 grains atop the coffee grounds before turning the machine on. Might have been a bit more. I just did a quick shake of the salt shaker in my hand and it looked about what the doctor used to do when making a small pot so I threw it in atop the grounds. Guess you could start there and adjust to taste afterward. I plan on using salt from now on unless my coffee is perfect without it. It takes that slight too-bitter edge off. The doctor told me many fine restaurants routinely add salt to their grounds! Of course that was years ago, don't know if they still do but bet they do if they get sale coffee!!! You know I saw on one of those chef shows that even the finest restaurants usually brew only decaf coffee after evening dinner hour is over since it is not cost effective to run two types of coffee at night!!! Said if you just order "coffee" after 8:00 p.m.(I think that was the cutoff hour), you almost always get decaf. Said that is one of the little secrets all restaurants use to keep costs down - serve everybody decaf late. He said no one notices! He also said never get the house specials at any restaurant as a rule - that they usually consist of older food they are trying to move. |
My Dad swears by salt in his coffee. I use the Keurig and Folgers has a caramel flavor I love:) |
I don't drink coffe, but I love a little salt on my ICE CREAM :thumbup: It really kicks up the flavor and creaminess :p Oh, and also fresh fruit :D |
I love salted coffee. On the yucky coffee you just bought...could you double steep it? Like make a pot throw it out and then make a pot again with the same grounds but add a couple of teaspoons of a good coffee to the grounds. Was that confusing? lol I had to go and re-read it myself. bwahahaha But then it would be like decaf...hmmm Have any of you tried Starbucks salted caramel coffee? Omg..it's so good but i'm sure we could recreate it ourselves. |
