Tiramisu - Need help I am making a recipe called Tiramisu. I found all the ingredients I need except the Lady Fingers. What are Lady Fingers? Some reviews said they used hard ones and others said they used the soft ones. Are they like Zingers or Twinkies? Has anyone made this before? |
They are oblong shaped, soft cookies...you can probably find them in the cookie isle. If I remember correctly I think they have an almond flavor to them...I think :) |
When my sister makes it, she uses the hard ones...packaged in the Italian food section... |
They are the hard ladyfingers, called saviordi. If you use soft ones, they would soak up too much espresso and would become too mushy. Let us know how your tiramisu turns out. I might make one for July 4th. |

I think they may have started out harder and softened up from all the ingredients. |
You may find the softer variety in the fresh fruit section of your grocery store. |
My mother says that Trader Joe's carries the Ladyfingers I don't know if you have that chain of stores in Texas or not? |

Do Lady Fingers have a cream filling? If I can't find them anywhere, do you think I could use Zingers or Twinkies without spoiling the recipe? |
You can use hard or soft. Personal preference on how mushyyou want it and how long it will sit... My assumption is most grocery stores with an Ethnic food section would have them. I would not replace them... |
Some people use sponge, pound or angel food cake as many stores no longer sell them. Any longish vanilla cookie or 2 cookies end-to-end might do as well if you want the firmer substance. |
The hard ones will soak up enough liquid (whether you use espresso or regular coffee, kahlua, etc) and become soft. Now I can't wait to have some tiramisu!! |
OK, now I'm on a mission. I have to find the "real" thing somewhere! I'm getting hungry for me some Tiramisu!:D |

I believe the correct spelling is Savoiardi biscuits |
I might go out for Italian for lunch tomorrow just so I can order Tiramisu for dessert, now that it's been talked about so much. Wow, it is so, so good when done right. Tiramisu & a lovely cup of exquisitely brewed coffee from a good restaurant with a handsome waiter..... |
I have to tell you a funny story about making tiramisu. I teach food production in a middle school. We were making tiramisu for a luncheon. I had the students make the lady fingers...we made 50 cookies. I left the on the counter, covered so the next day we could finish the tiramisu. The custodians ate them. The hard lady fingers are not that food just plain.. But they ate all of them:eek: I guess because I had them on trays on the counter I was gifting them.. I was not happy. So...could your bake your own lady fingers? |
Sure she could. My mom used to make her own & we loved them. |
My mom uses the softish ones, and her recipe is awesome. She gets hers from big lots usually, it is a clear package and has bright orange on it. I would try and look and shape and consistency of cookie on package or through package as opposed to what they call it, if you can. Call me biased but I'm not sure i'd even try a recipe made with twinkies-heavy cream, ricotta cheese, and twinkies? *shudders* Keep a keen eye out, and don't despair, you will find them eventually |

If they don't have them now, they may get them in later as their stock sometimes changes. |

I wanted to mention, if you make this in a bowl, you can sort of line the bowl with the lady fingers so they'll be on the outside. Presentation would be more like a pudding then, unless you want to just barely freeze it so you can flip the bowl upside down and slide it out carefully. |
