Let's talk RICE Growing up in the south we ate plain ole white rice. Depending upon how well you could cook it, it was either sticky or fluffy. Since my hubby doesn't particularly like rice, I haven't served much in the past 30+ years. I was still of the opinion that you went to the store and bought Uncle Ben's parboiled rice 'cause it always cooked up fluffy. Hard to mess up Uncle Bens. Occasionally I'd cook brown rice or wild rice (which I understand isn't really rice at all. Recently Peachbongi introduced me to Jasmine rice and WOW is it yummy. Nothing like the rice my mom used to cook. Now I find myself checking the store shelves for new kinds of rice. My latest find was black rice also known as purple rice. It is YUMMY in all caps! So let's talk rice..... |
Gee, didn't know about that. I used to get saphrin rice and loved it. I'll have to branch out more. |

Well, I am from the south but more hill country. I did not grow uo eating rice...uncle Ben or rice a ronnie maybe. We had potatoes at most dinners..still love mashed potatoes:D Anyway..fast foward.. Living in south Florida the culture is most decidedly rice eaters. I now have a rice cooker and make rice often. My younger brother was married to a girl from Japan and she taught me how to cook rice. You are right...there are many different types of rice and each has it's own flavor and texture . I now love coscous .. Prepared with some red onion, feta cheese, lemons oh my:D |
Oh my, I forgot all about saffron rice which we simply called yellow rice. |
Oh for the love of rice!!! Mom cooked rice with everything! !! Eggs and rice, ketchup with rice, dirty rice, beans and rice ...I could go on and on. Hubby first thought dang r are y'all Chinese cause y'all eat a lot of rice!! |

That's what my moms motto was, rice is cheap and its a filler! She's Cuban but we grew up in new Orleans! My favorite dishes r the Jambalayas , gumbos... mmmmmm getting hungry just thinking about it! |
My absolute favorite rice is BASMATI ~ it smells like popcorn when it is cooking :D:D |
Well, I could go on about rice being asian, lol I just prefer that plain old white rice for the most part. I do venture into brown rice from time to time as it's "better" for you. I also like Uncle Ben's from time to time. I usually will make myself rice and hubby a baked potato. I found a 1 1/2 cup rice cooker, just the right size. |
My Sir is an old school southern gentleman...He doesn't care for the pre-seasoned rices, or wild, or brown.... He likes white rice with butter and some garlic and herbs Im NOT a rice fan, but I prefer "wild" rice, or something a bit more exotic, but there's only two of us so if He won't eat something I'm stuck eating it for a week-no thanks. |
Years ago my neighbor from Korea fed my little boy rice with little drops of sesame oil, he ate it like he was starved! When she moved she gave me her old rice cooker and Jasmine rice- and showed me how to use it. I find the Yellow Star brand to be the best! |

Love basmati rice and jasmine too!..I throw in some minced cilantro when its done and I'll put a big bowl of it in the frig. ......I'll heat up small portions and then I'll add in a cut up avocado. I also love Lundberg Wild Blend wild rice! I cook it in low sodium chicken broth. When it's done I stir in some sauteed mushrooms, leftover cooked shredded chicken, and golden raisins. |
