Recipes/Ingredients that you want to try but haven't yet I just got my monthly flyer for this local Japanese market, and found a few interesting things in it. First was the theme of the month "okonomiyaki" which is a pancake/quiche like food, flour based, with egg, cabbage, green onion, and whatever you've got on hand. "Okonomi" means whatever you got, or anything goes. So you can put in whatever you have. They included this recipe for it with pork belly, looks so YUM! Or you can put in shrimp, udon, chicken, squid, whatever. Top it with special okonomiyaki sauce and kewpie mayo. It's like a giant takoyaki. Also in this issue, there is a section on BLACK GARLIC! Has anyone ever had this? Supposedly it has more healthful benefits than regular garlic. It's premium grade garlic that's been fermented. Has similar texture and consistency of roasted garlic. I found a website that sells it. It's not easy to make it at home. It requires you to have your oven on for 40 days. :rolleyes: Black Garlic | Buy Online Other than that, I've never had truffle before, other than in oil infused with it, and mac and cheese that supposedly had it in there, but it wasn't even that good. |
There are very few things that I have seen on a menu and haven't tried, but wanted to (at least that come to mind). I know there are several things that I have heard about that sound intriguing .....I need to think on this thread after I return from Miami :D:D |
Of course you are the only one that responded. I've never seen black garlic on a menu that I can recall. I love garlic so if I ever see it anywhere I would so order it. But I can mail order some. |

I guess my OP meant if there are ingredients (like at a market) that you found that you want to use but haven't, or don't know how, or any recipes that you haven't tried to make for one reason or another. Not stuff off a menu. |
I saw the black garlic on the Dr Oz and there are supposed to be health benefits to eating it |
I havent heard of black garlic til this thread..I would try that, however I'm not really adventerous when it comes to food anymore. I no longer have a cast iron stomach..I guess age might have something to do with it. I've always wanted to try a truffle, although not really sure exactly ehat they are, and they're freakin expensive!! I finally tried sushi>>>yea that didn't go well at all! Raw fish didnt go well at all...i even tried the all veggie ones....yea, nope, my stomach said okay no! lol!:rolleyes: |

For the sushi, maybe you don't like the nori paper. My bff was the same way. She always got her sushi with soy wrapper instead (it has zero taste, so to me that was yuck) and worked her way up to nori. She doesn't eat fish either, she's a vegetarian. She gets cucumber roll, avocado roll, or tamago nigiri (that's the sweet egg omelette). Not all sushi is raw fish. In fact sushi refers to the rice, which is a short grain rice flavored with a special kind of vinegar. It's good just by itself! |

Yea! I'm all for people trying new foods! Remember it doesn't have to have raw fish in order to be sushi! :) Oh do you eat soft shell crab? There is a roll called a spider roll that is deep fried soft shell crab and depending on the sushi joint can have cucumber, avocado, gobo (a pickled root veggie), sprouts, etc. Very yummy and crunchy and everything cooked. If you don't like crab, there's a Crunch roll which is basically the same thing but instead of the crab it's a shrimp tempura. Can you tell I love sushi? LOL |

LOL yea they call it a spider roll bc you can see the legs sticking out on one side. Sounds gross but it's not. Very crunchy and yummy. To be honest, soft shell crab doesn't have that much "crab" flavor, and I love crab. It's just the crunchy deep fried-ness that is so good. I think a shrimp tempura has more shrimp flavor (and you can actually feel the springyness of the shrimp meat too) than soft shell crab has crab flavor. But a soft shell crab is a crab that has just molted. Just like how all shellfish do. The shed their old too small shell (they crawl out the back fyi ;) ) and they get caught when the shell is super soft. Then they get deep fried and the shell is edible. And they do clean out the guts/lungs, etc and they cut off the face so you don't eat brains, guts, or eyeballs. :D Sound yummy? |
