Terrible Situation - 19 BRT's in Montreal Rescue We have just been advised of this situation. 19 dogs were seized from a Montreal breeder. We are trying to gather more information as I type this. Likely I will be driving to Montreal along with others to try to rescue as many as we can. It is unclear how many have actually been put down, but our club needs to move very quickly. Please send a prayer up for these dogs and our clubs' efforts. |
Prayers lifted and please update when you can!! |
Thank you for your prayers. I just realized that many won't know what a BRT is. It is a Black Russian Terrier, a very large and black dog. Black dogs do NOT do well at shelters!!! They are also a guard and protect breed..... He is the big black boy in my avatar. More pics are in my album. |
How terrible. I hope they can all be saved. They are such majestic dogs. please keep,us posted. |
With your and Dave's commitment to this breed and your huge hearts, I know you will find a way to do everything they can do to rescue these dogs. You and Dave have done so much to educate, protect, and speak out for the BRTs. I pray that they are healthy and that you find foster and forever homes for these dogs. I hope you have many club members join your efforts to help save these dogs. I pray you have a safe trip to Montreal. I am also praying for Magic and your little scamp. I hope all goes well for Magic at the doctor today. |
Thanks Lisa. Update what a bloody mess this is!!! We still have not talked with the director of the SPCA in Montreal - they apparently are very busy. But through sources there is one pregnant bitch... Bloody hell. But we have found a good breeder experienced who will take on this bitch and whelp the puppies....if the shelter will let her go. We have someone popping up from the USA saying the breeder who the dogs were rescued from, promised her all the puppies (7). More confusion, because if the SPCA seized those pups they are now officially in their care. Well it will be an interesting day or three:confused::confused::eek: |
Gail, this makes me sick to read this. 19 of those lovely and majestic beauties and noble big beasts mistreated/neglected is a nightmare. I pray you all can find enough worthy and good homes to take them in and get them on the road to recovery and happiness - no easy feat and I know how much work is likely in store for your club members. 19 is a huge number of these guys to try to place successfully. Oh, my! Praying for all those babies! Safe travels. ♥ |
Need help here. Myron Kelly K9 unit. Is there such a person or an organization in New Jersey. This is the person who popped up and said all "puppies" were theirs... |
I didn't have much luck, but there is an officer in New Jersey by that name that has a canine partner. DERRELL RIDDICK v. DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS :: 2010 :: New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division - Unpublished Decisions :: New Jersey Case Law :: US Case Law :: US Law :: Justia |
Thanks Lisa. Okay I have found fosters for 6 dogs and permanent homes for 2. Still need one more, and maybe 7 more if that K9 unit is not successful in their appeal. |

I could only find what Lisa found. Looked a bit on Facebook and Twitter for that name, spelling and varied the spelling and just nothing. Boy, that's fast work to get that many homes in such a short time! Good work! |
Wow! Praying for all involved... |
These are identified as Myron Kelley's photos - or some of them are from a Google search I did. https://www.facebook.com/awbrta/photos Here's the Google Search: https://www.google.com/#q=black+russ...+myron&spell=1 |

Well we as a club may be small but we have pulled out all the gears here. I am still in contact with three folks, one in NFLD and 2 in Vancouver BC who are just about begging to be on the adoption list. By the way that is 2500 miles east of Toronto and 2500 miles west of Toronto. LOL. We would need to cargo ship the dogs if they the adopters pass muster. Oh yes after my argument with the New Jersey poster my hubby as the Pres came on line and said Let us all be Civil here..... Ummmm wondering if he was talking about me or him/her.....:p |
Look at this Google Search results: https://www.google.com/#q=black+russ...C+myron+kelley https://www.facebook.com/myron.kelle...=browse_search |

Okay he is real those are BRT;s in his pictures But this rescue is turning into a mares breakfast. You have no idea how valuable breeding dogs are in this breed. We have had breeders come out of the woodwork to say I want this or that bitch. I respond they all will be spayed/neutered prior to placement... this is basically anathea to the Russian mind set. Oh well out of the fire and into the fray... God love me don't they know the lines??? Good flolcking grief, I'd never breed her lines... |

I "followed" his FB page to see what he's all about. Sounds like he's quite a dynamo and I'll bet most healthy dogs love the work if he's not OT and too militant in his training and handling. If he gets a sick/frail dog from this gift, wonder what they do then? Does he find them a nice, quiet, forever home where they can get good vetting, rehab, I hope? |
Wow, what a tense situation. You have your hands full. The guy certainly looks legit, but could be a bit more diplomatic given huge task at hand. He claims they are "his" by donation, but does he have any contract that would hold up in Canadian court? And all 7 in the litter? How the heck does he know they will all have the correct temperament for police work? Wouldn't he rather wait until they are of the proper age to be evaluated and get only the ones that will be suitable for that kind of life? |
Update The dogs confiscated all 19 of them, seven puppies and one at least one pregnant bitch, are still technically in the ownership of this breeder. Although they will be housed at a shelter until the trial date. The trial date is set for Sept 13th. Our club can do nothing until after that trial........... |
What a terrible situation! Praying all of these dogs end up in a good place with your help. |
oh Gemy just reading this thread. I do so admire your heart and your work for the dogs. I can't help...but I will send a pray that it works out for what is best for the dogs!!!! (((hugs))) |
The is so sad. Your heart must be breaking right now. This gives you time to plan and strategize, but until the court date, you don't know what you're dealing with, I suppose. Those poor dogs. I know you'll find a way to help them, Gail. |
Worried here Horrified animal activists hope shocking video leads to animal shelter shutting down | CTV Montreal News This is where these 19 dogs are headed to on Tuesday; well at least some of them. |
:(NO! Those poor dogs are going from bad to worse! |
I need some internet savvy folks, to help me research this shelter. Get more up to date info on it. Also from my fellow members experienced in breed specific rescue, to help me wade through the morass of a shelters policy(ies). I am working on the understanding that nothing can be done to these dogs until after the court date of Sept 13. But I also want to be able to pro-actively if the judgement goes against her, show up on the Saturday to rescue them all. My hubby the president of the club, says these organizations always leave some out to pts dogs for disease or bad temperament, even before the trial...... |

And you just can't neuter these large breed puppies at Gawd help us 7 or eight wks old, my God the incidence of hip dysplasia which is already high in this breed will go up astronomically. And that is and can be a death sentence to a large breed, especially if the HD is moderate to severe. A very painfull death sentence...... crying here. I don't mind if all the adult dogs get de-sexed but please not the puppies!! |
Some small movement or info Well our Secretary did actually get to speak with some-one at the shelter today. The dogs are currently at that Berger Blanc place, but it was the police who seized the dogs, and they the SPCA hope to receive the dogs in Tuesday. Apparently the police seem to have some decision making ability into where the dogs are going to be kept. Montreal and environs have districts or municipalities that each can have their own distinct bylaws; so things I suppose can get a tad confusing. At least the shelter is appearing to be more open to working with our club; we shall see. |
