Any parrot owners? 4 Attachment(s) Just wondering if we have any parrot owners? I go on a conure board but not to many post on it so I don't really get to talk about my other baby too often but I thought I'd share that I have a 7 month old green cheek split yellow sided conure baby boy named Kiwi! He is the other joy of my life along with Stormy and my real babies. I am just so excited to share that he started saying his first word a few weeks ago. He says his own name "kiwi" it is so cute and I think he sense that Stormy is missing because he keeps going over to the kitchen where Stormy's bed is. He enjoys chasing Stormy around the house and she enjoys chasing him around the house also ( his wings are clipped so he likes to walk around the house ) I can't believe how smart these little creatures are, I can be in another room of the house and call his name and he will come to me, he is also a BIG BIG piggie, he tries to steal Stormy's food all the time. Heres a couple pictures of my little buddy! And of course a couple new ones of my baby girl Stormy before the accident. |
parrots Hey, I am most definitely a parrot owner. I have a Quaker parrot, an African Grey, and a cockatoo. Totally spoiled. |
I love parrots.. I had a Quacker when I was younger it was my bestfriend! My mother has two parrots. African Grey and a Double Yellow Amazon ?... They both will jump off their cages and walk to her bedroom for some loving! they are so smart. I would love a parrot myself but Cutie is a hunter and she will kill anything :( |
Stormy is so cute! I use to have a conure, he has now passed away. They have quite the little personalities. My conure HATED my husband. I think he was jealous! As soon as he'd see my hubby he'd go into attack mode. He'd fly straight for him and start chompin' on the back of his neck, but he was always sweet as pie to me :) |
LOL Missy that is soooo funny!! For the first time ever yesterday Kiwi went into attack mood and flew off my shoulder right at my step son who was sitting next to me, he grabbed his hair and was screaming and flapping his wings it was hilarious!! Of course I don't allow that behaviour but it was too funny lol. I love parrots!! They sure are sooo smart and mine is such a little piglet, he will eat ANYTHING. If theres food on the table he will find a way to get on the table and try to eat it. Today I had a freezie and he was chopping away at like crazy. He loves to sit on the couch and watch tv. I find it so funny. Whenever my dad is over, Kiwi enjoys biting my dad. He doesn't do it to anyone else like he does my dad, my dad will say " ow that hurts " and kiwi will scream and do it again, he thinks its a game! Valeria, I would so LOVE an african grey, I have watched some on youtube and they are SO smart and speek so well, I hope to own one some day soon! |
Totally off the question but I have been interested in a bird ever since I meet my husband, his mother in law had a amazon. Anyway I have been told by everyone to get a green cheek conure. Because they are good with Kids and they are one of the quietest parrots out there! And a good first time bird. Is that true? I have a 4 year old, I see that you had a pic of your parrot with a kid. Give me any info you have would be awesome. I also have a kitty I don't know how that would work? |
I have a green cheek conure also. His name is PAPI and he is 8 years old. I got him as soon as he hatched. He was my bird but now only like my husband. He says around 25 words. Like BE QUITE, OLIVIA, PREETY BIRD,DAVID and when the phone rings he always screems HELLO....They are fun but he is a male and he is at his sexual age and has stared biting....Oh he barks at the dogs... |

aww I am so glad to hear that your conure says so many words, Kiwi is still young and just says Kiwi and occasionally HI but he screams alot especially if I am in another room and call his name he will scream. it is also so funny because I will talk to him pretending to argue and he argues back, it is the most hilarious thing ever!!! BridgettesMomma- They are amazing!!!! This is my first, I bought him for my daughter for her second birthday in July. he will be 8 months on the 14th and I have to say that they are great, VERY VERY smart. I am not sure about other conures but from my experience they are not very loud. They do get their moments where they will scream but it isn't a constant annoying screaming. It's best to get a handfed/tamed baby. My Kiwi has started biting a bit but I tell him a very firm NO and give him a quick time out in his cage and he is starting to get alot better. He doesn't bite hard its a playful bite but still I don't want to encourage bad behaviour. They are VERY social birds that LOVE human interaction. I leave my conures cage open all day so he can come out whenever he likes, his wings are clipped so he can't fly around but he can fly down and fly a little across the room but not like a normal bird with non clipped wings can. They are great with children, my daughter plays with him all the time. They LOVE kisses, I can sit on the couch and Kiwi will kiss my lips the whole time, it is so funny because he actually will stick his tongue out and try to tongue me, I think hubby gets a little jealous but they are very social birds. I made a play area for him above his cage with tree branchs that goes up to the ceiling. Theres some toys hanging and he enjoys to play on it, they do need some toys in the cage to keep them busy because they love to play! Also I have a fleece blanket handing in the cage like a hammock that he sleeps in. Even if they are just sitting on the couch with you is good interaction. I am amazed each day how smart they are and I am going to get another one in the furture. They are awsome and I would recommend one for sure but make sure it is handtamed. I feed my conure a mix of seeds, bird kibble, fresh/frozen veggies, fruits, eggs and yogurt. Oh and kiwi LOVES cheese but then again he loves anything you will feed him. They love music also, it is really funny when I have music on Kiwi will bob is head and dance around singing. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me! |
parrots Hi, I presantly have 3 african greys a mealy amazon and a cockatiel. I did also have an unbrella cockatoo and a blue and gold macaw, they sadly passed away a few yrs ago. Parrots are very, very inteligent and should never be underestimated. birds, parrots can honestly be your sole mate and can become very attached and devoted to there owner. I had to go into hospital for quite some mths, about 4yrs ago, my macaw got so sick and died at the vets, they put his death down to a broken heart, they could find nothing wrong with him, this was very sad. enjoy your parrot no matter what breed, they are beautiful, and as said very inteligent, funny, naughty just like a small child and need to be watched like one too, if you dont be warned when i say they can be naughty they get into mischief, and can harm them selves, some do like making holes in the curtains and saying peepoo lol Parrots vary in many ways. my advise to anyone gettng a parrot if they dont have experience, is to gather up as much info as you can and learn about there needs, diet is very important in the well being, and there are things that can kill toys to play with a suitable cage that has plenty of room and lots of love and respect. any question or advise please ask, im sure others on the site that do have parrots would agree. enjoy your parrot and all the best hehe |
Kiwi is very pretty! When I was looking into getting a bird, I was debating between a GCC and a parrotlet. I ended up going with a parrotlet. Her name is Fern. :) |
we have an african grey and goffin cockatoo both are in there teens now. grey Otis talks up a storm and has learn to sound like a train whistle. Bailey the goffin does not talk where we can understand him. |
AWW.. I was looking at a parrolett too but I decided on Kiwi because I wanted a birdie that would say some words, I get lonely sometimes and need a pet to talk to and talk back to me lmao :p:cool: I want a grey sooo bad, they can talk SO clear, I have seen some videos of them speaking and I coouldnt believe my ears! |
Ok so to all of you with birds, do any of you have cats? How does that work out? Can they be potty trained like dogs? So they don't poop on your shoulder. Where can I get a GCC I will NOT buy from a pet store. |
I had a boss who had a conure and his bird would actually give the dog commands (sit, stay, down ect.) and the shih tzu would actually listen!! It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Also, whenever the shih tzu puppy would have an accident, the bird would scold her and say "Bad Lolly! Bad dog!" My boss said his puppy was completely housetrained within a month because the bird was helping to scold any accidents as they happened, no matter where he was! LOL!! The bird was his dog's nanny! |
We dont have one now but in the summer we plan to start looking for one. We are either gonna get a macaw or an african grey. We want one that can learn to say quite a bit so I imagine we will get a grey. Can macaws learn to say quite a bit? When I have researched about good talking ability it is always the greys that are mentioned. I really love the look of the macaws though |
Make sure you get your bird when it is a baby. Go visit and hold it everyday and you will have a friend for life. I bought a 5 year old Umbrella Cockatoo, He ended up only liking my husband and my older daughter. He would fly at me and bite hard. and my other daughters as well..Even when we clipped his wings he would climb down his cage and run over to me and bite. We gave him to a lady who rescues parrots . She is near us so my husband stops in and Haans remembers him... |
i have a gray :thumbup:her name is spencey, she can talk ,bark , and do some tricks. i used her for pet therapy. the residents loved her.:D |
BridgettesMomma- I do not have a cat but I would imagine so that if brought up from baby they would do fine. Kiwi is pretty bossy but does enjoy playing with Stormy. My MIL breeds mini pot belly pigs and when she had a litter in the summer we bring a few babies home with us to find homes in our area since MIL lives 4 hours away. We had one that was 4 months old and Kiwi would actually ride on the piggies back around they house and scratch his head, the piggie loved it and kiwi actually liked the piggie alot too! I would suggest just like with finding a pup, do your research. Look online and find a breeder. I had to travel about 2hours to get my Kiwi from a good breeder who breeds them. I got to see the parents and the siblings. I paid $150 for mine which is a great price considering they range from about 150-250. They also have sun conures which are SOOO beautiful but will run you around $500. Do not buy from the pet store thats for sure I seen them at Petsmart and they were WAAAY over priced. A good breeder should sell you the baby around 12 weeks I believe and give you a hatch certificate and also stay in contact with you for any further questions. |
double post ops! |
If your are thinking about getting a larger bird, I would suggest getting one that has just been weaned from hand feeding, as they are bonded with people already, you can also finish out the hand feeding if you feel comfortable about doing that. both of mine I hand fed from babies. the smallest bird that I have hand fed from the time it was hatch was a love bird. Look for a breeder in your area, or either a bird club. there are bird fairs where they sell ever type of bird from all ages, I would be careful at one of these though unless you find some from your area that you can call if you need help. you ask about mawcaws they do talk some better then others, my sister has one and she talks but mostley screams, they are loud. |
I have 2 greys, both over 20 yrs old. One I've had since he was about 1 week old, the other I adopted about 4 yrs ago after he was attacked by a raccoon while with his previous owners. They didn't like the noise or mess so kept his cage outside where during the night, the coon reached through the bars and caught him by the foot. He lost all but one toe on that foot and most of the use of it. Greys use their feet as hands to eat so he has a really hard time with daily life. I don't let them interact with the dogs because although my original grey has been raised with them his whole life, he's very bossy with them. He loves to sneak up on them and give a quick pinch to the tail, ear or anywhere else he can reach. He talks constantly and can imitate ANY sound he hears. It's like having a 2 yr old that never grows up. We do a lot of traveling with our camper and everyone goes along. They definitely attract attention everywhere we go. |

I would like to get a bird (or two) and I'm torn between a pair of lovebirds or a parrotlet... I've been told that GCC's are good....but I like smaller or bigger birds in different colors. |
cats and parrots Answer to question about cats and birds, you can train them not to poop on you. I trained my macaw very easily,he never pooped on me, might poop on someone eles but never me lol I would play with him and after approx 15-20 min return him to the cage or stand and wait until he was just about to poop, i would say rocky go poop and, give plenty of praise a tit bit and back of the cage to play. It didnt take him long to figure out what the word poop meant. I think the art of that one in my opinion is timing and, catching them at the right time and, quickly putting them back to the cage, if there already in the cage or on the stand, every time you see them just about to poop, say the birds name and say poop as with pups, plenty of praise. Cats,I used to rescue cats and had 10 altogether, they have all past away now with age. I do have 1 stray cat now that has moved itself in but, i would never leave a cat in a room with any bird, you can never say never. I have heard of so many people saying how there cat gets along with there bird and have been brought up together, there cat would never harm the bird and desaster strikes, so much for my cat loves my bird and gets along just fine with it. My birds are all in my lounge now, my partner and me are both trained very well to shut the door and put the catch on when we leave the room. they used to have there own birdy room before i got devorsed but, this new house isnt as big as my other. Im not saying people with cats shouldnt have birds, but I dont agree with leaving a cat in a room unattended with any bird,it is asking for trouble, cats are cats. Pups have to be trained also to respect the birds to, not only can the pup get seriously hurt but so can the bird, the same goes with young children. I have been bitten, the greys bite is very painfull and they can crack a walnut with there beak, but the worst bite ever was a cockatoo, not mine my friends it hated women, wont tell you what i shouted there could be children presant lol phew that was a long answer i have my talking head on:D |

I have a hideous Macaw named Hector ['he' laid and egg recently] he's 12 years old and barks louder and longer than my dogs. He talks too but not nearly as much as he barks |
Oh I forgot that when Papi is ready to do something mean like bite or fly at you he start this evil laugh..hahahahahaha. I wish I could discribe his tone. It sounds like the devils laugh... |
We have a Timneh African Grey, names Timmy, got him when he was just weaned, has a huge vocabulary, he is going on 20 years of age. His favorite word is PATTI, :). He is quite spoiled, his diet is quite varied and loves to eat from his spoon, cottage cheese and what really amazed us was that he loves meat, chicken and roast beef :)We are very particular with his diet. He loves to eat corn off the cob :) oh and sweet peas and green beans :) |
If you want a bird that talks I would really go with the GCC, they do not get very big and they aren't totally small. I had a pair of lovebirds and they are LOUD and very very sneaky little buggers! I really would love a macaw too but from what I have read you need to have alot of experience with big birds since they are so powerful and they are not good birds for beginners, starting out small is a good way to learn how to take care of a bird. |
