Fern, the Parrotlet... 3 Attachment(s) A couple people have recently asked about Fern, my Parrotlet, so I decided to take some pictures of her. :) Here she is! I'd love to get a second one but worry about them not getting along and noise level. Does anyone else have a Parrotlet? |
too cute! |
Oh Kyle I love Fern..she is soooo pretty. I miss my Eclectus male so much but know that he is with a good friend of mine in sunny and humid Georgia!:D People who have never had birds can't even imagine that a small, itty, bitty thing like that can be sooooo much work. I think more than a Yorkie that's for sure! |

She looks so sweet! And such a healthy eater. |

I know- birds are so much work! She is- no doubt- the loudest and messiest. Her stuff (food, toys, etc.) are way more expensive than cat and dog stuff. |

Kyle I just adore Fern, you were the person that taught me about parrotlet's! I remember the first time I saw a picture of her I thought she was the most beautiful love bird I had ever seen! Now she is the most beautiful Parrotlet I have ever seen! I still have my stinker Feathers the Cockatiel, he is loud and full of himself! I recently got him a new toy, it's hanging acrylic letters spelling bad boy! I'll have to take a picture of it when I get home. |
She is very pretty...does she bite? :p Those beaks look scary! |
Im a dork. What is the dfifference between a parrot and a Parrotlet? Fern is beautiful. I have never owned a bird. They seem so fragile with their tiny feet. |

2 Attachment(s) My mother-in-law has a parrotlet that looks a lot like fern. It's a little blurry, but here's his picture! His name is Teddy. My husband and I also have an African Grey named Sam. |
Fern is beautiful! She looks so happy being able to look out of the window. My 2 cockatiels love to be in the window. I think the worst part of owning a bird is the molting season - and, maybe, the way they like to have seed throwing contests:D. You are going to have so much fun with Fern. |
I have 4 parrotlets, I originally got a male and female for breeding. They did and after two clutches decided I didn't like breeding so took the nestbox away, but kept them as pets. The other two are their offspring, a male and female, they share a cage under the first two. parrotlets are very territorial, lots of bickering between the two pairs. I would suggest that you keep your Fern as a single, if you get another they would bond together and she might not stay as friendly. |
2 Attachment(s) Last year my original pair got busy and started laying eggs, after watching some just fall and break, I gave them a nestbox and she laid 6 more, 3 hatched and I pulled them to handfeed. Here's a couple pics of the babies, all males, one was a whole week younger then the others. I sold two of them and my niece took the other one. She calls him Zeppy, and he is very tame and even has learned to say "step up". None of mine talk, does Fern? That;s ok, I have others that say way too much:) Martha |

She's a little over a year old and has never laid an egg. Is that normal? ETA: I also noticed you have another bird. Do your parrotlets get along with your other bird(s)? |
Kyle, Fern is ADORABLE! Her colors are so pretty, and she is very photogenic :) Are you going to try to teach her to talk? I know the males are more likely to talk, but we were able to teach our female parakeet to say a few words (reluctantly, and not well, but we DID anyway :) ) BTW-I love the name Fern for a bird...my mom wanted to name me that, but it would have been a NIGHTMARE growing up with my maiden name. So glad she didn't! But it's perfect for a green bird! |

ETA: Thanks for the compliment on her name. I had been liking the name for awhile but it didn't really seem to fit a cat or dog. It was between "Fern" and "Kiwi" and I think Kiwi is a really popular bird name (particularly with parrotlets) so we decided to go with Fern. :) |
We have Tiki, a Greenwing Macaw (big and beautifully red), Nittany, an African Grey, and Demri, a Green-cheek Conure. They definitely require a lot of time and the toys and food aren't cheap but the way they talk and act will entertain for hours :D Your baby is adorable!. I tried to post pics but they're too big. |
She is so cute Kyle! I just love that third picture of her....love her name too! :D |

Aw....Fern is Beautiful and I love all the healthy fruit & veggies she eats to keep her feathers so lovely.:) I cannot even imagine the time, work & patience required for a bird. My goodness, I used to have a Macaw that lived in the house directly behind mine and he would come over onto my fence and roof and hang out....he was quite the chatty guy. Beautiful and friendly....his beak was huge & quite sharp too. Thanks for sharing your pics of Fern. |
