I grew up with a saltwater tank in the house. My dad was addicted to it!!! It was always so fun to go to the fish store and purchase awesome anemones and fun colored fish. The bummer was watching that 75$$ fish die the next morning! Ah It killed my dad!! But nothing was better than feeding the anemones frozen shrimp by hand!! Hi, I just realized that what may have killed your snail & shrimp could have been the urchin. Many sea urchins have venomous spines, if the shrimp or snail came near it, this may have been what killed it. The urchins predators are snails, crabs. If your tanks chemistry checks out, I would NOT do that drastic water change, it may stress out the other fish and create a whole new can of worms for you. ;) I would do a 20% if needed and let it be. When I first started my tank I bought some clown fish, my favorite and some other fishies. I also bought a brittle star, they are beautiful, the aquarium store owner told me it was OK to put in the tank with my other fish. Yeah! it ate my scooter blenny, one of clownfish. I took the darn thing out of the tank, and took it back. From then on regardless of what the aquarium guy told me I would research on the internet or books any new inhabitants that I wanted to bring home. One of my most special treats while owning salt water aquariums, I had 4, one in every room, my anemone split itself, 2 x's, she was in a 10 gallon tank with a beautiful black clownfish. Okay, I'm starting to miss my critters again. : ( |
I wish I had the time, equipment and money for an anemone, but we are just starting slow, that's for sure. Our urchin is a pencil urchin, so he doesn't have poisonous spines. They are all blunt and the shop owner picked him up with his hand. He is pretty tiny and harmless. Our test kit was aparently off though and our Nitrates are at about 50 ml/g, which isn't good. That's why we have to do the water change. It is the only way to get the nitrates out of the water. I agree with you that I am sceptical about what many people say, but I do know that this is the only way to lower that level in our tank. It will take us a while to complete that water change for sure, but I think it is probably the best thing to do right now. It will be a while before we add more invertibrates into the tank, so our main goal is to keep the ones we have alive and if anything else does die, to get it out of the tank as quickly as possible. all of our fish seem to be doing really well still. I never had expensive equipment, the anemone was in a 10 g, with an eclipse hood filter. The lights I used were 1 10,000k and one actinic. The key is not to overfeed, that brings up nitrates, or overstock. ONly 1 fish with the anemone, plenty of snails and a few hermies. I did not feed the anemone anything special other than brine fish. Whenever I did those targeted feedings, they would pollute the water and my anemone would die. Once I bought the bulb anemone, & put it in that tank, it lasted 3+ years & split itself 2xs. Change 10-15% of the water every 3-4 weeks. In my 72 g, I had a protein skimmer, its the best sewer system for your tank, it will get rid of the nitrates, a GREAT investment for your tank, I had the sea clone, from petsolutions but you can purchase on ebay as well. My filter on that tank was an aquaclear 110, always go with a filter bigger than the recommended for your size tank. 3-4 power heads to move debris. There are other things that can soak up the nitrate which you can put in your filter, or in a pouch, there is biochem zorb, Renew, chemi pure, *nitrate sponge. Just sharing in case any of it helps. |
Yes it does help! We have a nice big protein skimmer, but haven't been able to set it up yet because we haven't finished building our sump and overflow box. I think that will help a lot. And I do think that we overfeed. I will look into the filtration options, because I sure don't want to have to do another water change. We do change 10 gallons every month (20%). I think I am getting good advice from the local fish store and a separate fish forum that I am on, but I am getting a LOT of advice, and it is hard to wade through. It is such a nerve wracking hobby, just because I don't really know what will happen next! |

It is an underwater protein skimmer. And it is pretty big, so I can't put it in my display tank. It is a EuroReef RS-80. I will post tank pictures tomorrow. I just got home from work and am exhausted! |

We did another water change today, and two more of our fish died! :( :( :( And two more don\'t seem to be doing so well. I am at a loss!! What a sad day! |
