Oh No! One less family member! I got a new tank inhabitant today, and low and behold, one of my others dies! Sigh!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=115332 |
Crap! Now our other shrimp has died! We don't know what is wrong. We checked all of our chemistry levels and they are all fine! I know there probably aren't many people on here that know anything about salt water aquariums. I am just super bummed because I loved the shrimp! They were so much fun to watch! I am on a fish forum, but there aren't many members, so I'm not getting many replies. My poor shrimp! I hope everything else in the aquarium is ok! |
Oh no! I'm sorry :( |
awe, I'm sorry. :( I have no clue about salt water thanks besides the fact that they are amazing!!! But I hope you figure out what is wrong...I know that stinks to lose some of your babies :( |
Thanks. I appreciate it. It just really sucks, not just the fact that these shrimp aren't cheap, or the fact that they were pregnant. It makes me worry about my fish and the brand new urchin I got today. I am afraid I am going to wake up in the morning and everything will be dead. (Otherwise known as tank wipeout) I've done all I know to do. Sigh, it isn't as bad as losing a pup, but it still sucks. |
I would just get rid of the urchin...wouldnt want to risk anything else dying! My boyfriend has a salt water reef tank, so I don't know a lot about salt water tanks, but i know a little. I can ask him about it if you'd like? |
I'm sorry they died on you:( Shana loves marine stuff.. so maybe you could PM her and ask... she may have an idea... just a thought |
well i just asked my bf....and he said that it probably isn't the sea urchin that killed the shrimpies! and if all of your chemical levels are fine then maybe the shrimp just shed their skin. He thought one of his peppermint shrimp had died once, but i guess they "molt" or shed their outer layer every once in a while. So, what he thought was a dead shrimp, was only the shrimps skin floating around! Good Luck! |
Thanks for asking your BF! I wondered at first if they were molting, but they completely stopped moving, and then one of my Nassarius snails started eating it, and that was a sure fire sign that he was dead. Then about an hour later the other one did the same thing. I have seen them lose their skin many times and it is pretty cool to see the exoskeleton they leave behind, but I know that there was no life left in these little guys when we pulled them out of the tank. All of my fish are still alive this morning. I think the snail that chowed down on the shrimp has died, but the other snails I have are still alive, as well as a hermit crab. All I can do now is watch and see. |
Gosh! What a bummer! I have the # to a really good tropical fish store as I am sure you do also. Thats about as much help as I can be. I hope everything stays calm in your tank today. I really am sorry about the shrimp!:( |
1 Attachment(s) And now I am losing snails. My invertibrates are all suffering. Man, what a bummer this has been! Attachment 191810 I went to the local fish store today and had my levels tested, and I do need to do a 100% water change over a period of about a week. And I got some iodine which aparently helps all invertibrates thrive. We shall see how this works out. |
Oh I'm so sorry. We never had a salt water tank, although it's on our some-day list. But we had the most beautiful fresh water tank. It sounds silly (because they're "only" fish), but it is so sad when things go bad. |
Hi, I have had saltwater tanks for over 6 yrs. live rock, live sand. 72 g was the biggest I would go. You may already know this, never put the water from the bag into your tank. When adding critters I would always float the bag, after 15 minutes, I would take out a little of the water from the bag, and replace it with the same amount from your tank, I would do this 2-3 times within 30 minutes or more. I wonder if you may have a snail that may have let out some poison? I would not change out 100% of the water, maybe 20 and then a few days later 20 more but that is just me. I read volumes before starting my tank, I was really scared to get it going but once I did, it went really Great. I even had a tank with just seahorses, those survived for 3 years or more, I moved them into another tank and that stressed them out, the seahorse tank had lots of little critters in it, it was awesome. We had a fire in 11/2006 caused by the electronics from the 72 gallon bowfront tank and I haven't gotten the nerve to get one up again. I do have a 10 gallon at work but that is about it for now. Good luck. |
Wow! Seahorse are very hard to keep! We will be doing our 100% water change over a matter of 10 days or so. About 10 gallons every 3 days, per the suggestion of our local fish experts. So glad to meet another member who has the same saltwater passion that we do. Thank goodness our fish are still doing very well! |
I am just seeing this thread. I am sorry about your shrimp. I really enjoyed seeing your tank pictures! I have a tropical fish aquarium. The most unusal thing I have in it now is an aquatic turtle but Ive had unusual fish in the past also. |
I grew up with a saltwater tank in the house. My dad was addicted to it!!! It was always so fun to go to the fish store and purchase awesome anemones and fun colored fish. The bummer was watching that 75$$ fish die the next morning! Ah It killed my dad!! But nothing was better than feeding the anemones frozen shrimp by hand!! I wish you the best of luck in figuring this out and I'm sorry about what you've already lost!! |
Hi, I just realized that what may have killed your snail & shrimp could have been the urchin. Many sea urchins have venomous spines, if the shrimp or snail came near it, this may have been what killed it. The urchins predators are snails, crabs. If your tanks chemistry checks out, I would NOT do that drastic water change, it may stress out the other fish and create a whole new can of worms for you. ;) I would do a 20% if needed and let it be. When I first started my tank I bought some clown fish, my favorite and some other fishies. I also bought a brittle star, they are beautiful, the aquarium store owner told me it was OK to put in the tank with my other fish. Yeah! it ate my scooter blenny, one of clownfish. I took the darn thing out of the tank, and took it back. From then on regardless of what the aquarium guy told me I would research on the internet or books any new inhabitants that I wanted to bring home. One of my most special treats while owning salt water aquariums, I had 4, one in every room, my anemone split itself, 2 x's, she was in a 10 gallon tank with a beautiful black clownfish. Okay, I'm starting to miss my critters again. : ( |
I wish I had the time, equipment and money for an anemone, but we are just starting slow, that's for sure. Our urchin is a pencil urchin, so he doesn't have poisonous spines. They are all blunt and the shop owner picked him up with his hand. He is pretty tiny and harmless. Our test kit was aparently off though and our Nitrates are at about 50 ml/g, which isn't good. That's why we have to do the water change. It is the only way to get the nitrates out of the water. I agree with you that I am sceptical about what many people say, but I do know that this is the only way to lower that level in our tank. It will take us a while to complete that water change for sure, but I think it is probably the best thing to do right now. It will be a while before we add more invertibrates into the tank, so our main goal is to keep the ones we have alive and if anything else does die, to get it out of the tank as quickly as possible. all of our fish seem to be doing really well still. Thank goodness! |
I never had expensive equipment, the anemone was in a 10 g, with an eclipse hood filter. The lights I used were 1 10,000k and one actinic. The key is not to overfeed, that brings up nitrates, or overstock. ONly 1 fish with the anemone, plenty of snails and a few hermies. I did not feed the anemone anything special other than brine fish. Whenever I did those targeted feedings, they would pollute the water and my anemone would die. Once I bought the bulb anemone, & put it in that tank, it lasted 3+ years & split itself 2xs. Change 10-15% of the water every 3-4 weeks. In my 72 g, I had a protein skimmer, its the best sewer system for your tank, it will get rid of the nitrates, a GREAT investment for your tank, I had the sea clone, from petsolutions but you can purchase on ebay as well. My filter on that tank was an aquaclear 110, always go with a filter bigger than the recommended for your size tank. 3-4 power heads to move debris. There are other things that can soak up the nitrate which you can put in your filter, or in a pouch, there is biochem zorb, Renew, chemi pure, *nitrate sponge. Just sharing in case any of it helps. |
Yes it does help! We have a nice big protein skimmer, but haven't been able to set it up yet because we haven't finished building our sump and overflow box. I think that will help a lot. And I do think that we overfeed. I will look into the filtration options, because I sure don't want to have to do another water change. We do change 10 gallons every month (20%). I think I am getting good advice from the local fish store and a separate fish forum that I am on, but I am getting a LOT of advice, and it is hard to wade through. It is such a nerve wracking hobby, just because I don't really know what will happen next! |
Looks like you have found some great advise! I kept checking back hoping someone could help! Hope everything works out for you! You guys should all post pics of your awesome tanks! |

How about you set it on your tank, behind in front? temporarily. It will help tremendously. Good luck! |
It is an underwater protein skimmer. And it is pretty big, so I can't put it in my display tank. It is a EuroReef RS-80. I will post tank pictures tomorrow. I just got home from work and am exhausted! |
im sorry about your losses, they seem like really cool pets tho |
We did another water change today, and two more of our fish died! :( :( :( And two more don't seem to be doing so well. I am at a loss!! What a sad day! |
