My neice has decided she is going to show her English Setter puppy. He's 4 months old and she told me they are using a shock collar on him. Maybe this is standard for that breed but I was horrified. Do any of you have any information on showing them?

i can't really help you, but it's strange. i've never heard of using shock collars to show before

For showing they would never use a shock collar (no value in it) but for field trails sadly many old trainers still use them. It helps the training process go faster instead of learning to work with the dog. Here are a couple of links you can read.

All field trials are sanctioned by some group such as The American Kennel Club (AKC), The American Field (the oldest - commonly called The Field), The National Shoot to Retrieve Association (NSTRA), and others. Most of the trials are held by local clubs with support from the parent organization. There are also championships and national championships which are club supported.
"Shock" or "E-Collars" may not be used.

Thanks for the links. I will read them when I get a chance. I'm really having a hard time with this. They havce absolutely no idea what they're doing.. and I mean none. They thought that because their dogs were AKC certified that they were show quality!!!

Whoops - they have a lot to learn.

You also will want to go to www.akc.org and read about the English Setter and what the standard is for showing. Good Luck.

Yes, I already directed them to the standard. I've highly encouraged to get with another shower of Setters in their area so they can have their dogs evaluated. Plus, they have SO much to learn. I know what it's been like for me to learn about showing Yorkies and breeding. They are just getting started and jumping in with both feet!
