Maltese I am considering getting a maltese can those of you that have one tell me what they are like in personality? Are there any Health problems they are prone to? How do they get along with your yorkies? I am looking for one that will be in the 3lb range as an adult. Thanks |
They all have different personalities but I think the main difference is the feistiness. They are not terriers so they tend to be more laid back about things. Not that they aren't silly playful little things, although some tend to be more happy just to sit on your lap all day. Healthwise, they have the same concerns as yorkies. |
I agree with the health issues, pretty much the same as a yorkie. I absolutley love my maltese(I have 3) and my yorkies do too!:D A little bit more time grooming but well worth it. |
2 Attachment(s) I have a male maltese, Chiquito is his name, and he is wonderful in every way, he is alittle bigger than Tinkerbell, he is about 6lbs and just perfect;) True about the grooming part though, lots of work. I wish you luck in your search:D  Maltese is the other yorkie:) |
Not to steal your thread, but I too have thought of adding a Maltese to our mix, anyone that owns one do you keep their hair long or has anyone cut their hair short or a puppy cut like some yorkies? I would love to see pics of these cuts on a Maltese. |
I don't personally own a maltese, but there was one in my rescue for a bit and she was the sweetest thing ever. She was so laid back and calm and very smart. Maltese is the other breed of dog I have considered adding to the pack once Im ready. |
3 Attachment(s) I'm letting my china doll grow back out but keep my male in a puppy cut (the pee pee on all that hair is just too much to keep up with) |
Beautiful dog! I just got a Maltese have never had one and did not plan on getting one,A breeder that raises them had a heart attack and had to get rid of most of her group so she just rehomed them to certain people, So i ended up bringing one home (hubby just loved that)She is about 16 mths and a bit shy,her coat had been shaved down real short, but oh are they SOFT. What do you do for tear stains? |

Thank you |
3 Attachment(s) My sister owns a Maltese girl. She is the cheekiest and naughtiest out of all the dogs I have ever met (I think each dog have their own different personalities-I am not generalising that all Maltese are naughty just happens to be my sis's Maltese is naughty). She loves attention, more than my Yorkie does and will come out with all sorts of tricks to get it. For example, if your sitting on the floor leaning on the couch, she will jump up and pull your hair strand by strand on the couch. She will also bite on your pants (the end of your pants) while you walk and you drag her around like a mop while you walk. She will also wrap her front legs around your leg to prevent you from walking and pay attention to her. Now, she has lots of attention from my mom, dad, and my sister and her boyfriend so its not like she is attention deprived. She is more of a happy go lucky cheerful gal while my yorkie boy is more of a snobbish character. She is not that hard to take care of in terms of grooming. My sister combs her thoroughly once in the morning and once in the night and cleans her face at the same time. Here are some pictures of her. |
I love that cut in the third picture, what a cuteie. MorkieAZ your two are adorable, I like the males cut. I love the long hair on the yorkies and the maltese, it is just such hard work to keep it up, so that is why I keep my yorkie in a short cut and I probably would a maltese too. Quote:

Thankyou, :D they are both sweethearts! I love the shorter cut too, it is so much easier and comfortable for him here in Az. but I think she looks better long. |
My Maltese is female. She defenitely is more laid back than the Yorkies. She has the most sweet loving disposition. She is more laid back now that she is older (going to be 12 soon) She would be happy being carried around like a baby all day long, or just sitting on my lap. She is my true lap dog. They are a wonderful breed. She doesn't have a wonderful Maltese coat, so I've always kept her cut short. |
