Ducklings? Do you live on a farm? Where do you keep them? | Kinda sorta LOL we have 8 acres here. My hubby has slowly been fencing the entire thing in. We have the side the neighbors are on fenced in. We have lots of animals here, not all of which we planned to get either! I have 18 hens that should start laying soon and some chicks that are just over a month old. We have ducks out in the pen with the chickens that are almost 3 months old, plus we have the ducklings here in the house under the heat lamp that just hatched on Tuesday of this week. There are 9 ducklings and 2 Toulouse Geese under the heat bulb. Of the ducklings, we have 3 mallards, 2 buff ducks, 2 gold star ducks, and 2 Blue Swedish ducks.
We just had a goat given to us too. A friend of my mom's asked if we could take her because someone just dropped her off at their house. So we said we would take her. She is a pretty brown and looks like a fawn from far off. We use the weedeater to cut down tall grasses for her and fork it in like hay. Well, it is hay, Timothy hay, we just don't have the machinery to cut the field and let it dry. So we cut her a day's supply in the evenings. She won't eat it if we let it dry out for more than a day. But if we cut it and fork it to her right away she will. She is pretty skittish of us right now so we have her penned up until we can tame her down some. She isn't running away from me when I bring her fresh water and food, but she still won't let me pet her. Hubby named her Cinnamon.
Oh and we have guineas. They eat mice, ticks, fleas, and small snakes. My mom bought them for my hubby as a b-day present so they are only 5 weeks old. In a few more months they should be old enough for us to turn loose. Unfortunately a coon got in the pens the other night and killed on guinea and 3 of my month old chicks. And yes, no offense to animal lovers, but we shot that coon! He was after my chickens and those chickens are food for my family...well atleast some of them are...two of the chicks he got were my daughters 4-H show chickens....She was hysterical. I told her it would be ok because she has 3 left but my poor baby was pretty upset. I don't blame her.
So we spent yesterday reinforcing chicken pens and in the process I forgot all about it being my Maddie's B-Day.:( We are going to make it up to her tomorrow. |
