homework help....1st grade!!!!! i am helping my 1st grade daughter with her homework. it is really kinda hard!!!!!!!! she has this sheet with a list of animals on it...and she has to write if it is a mammal or not. it is very confusing...i have NO idea how to explain it to her. she said they did not talk about it in class   the list is: frog dolphin snake butterfly pig duck kangaroo ant bat giraffe sheep goldfish lion how do you explain this to a 6 year old? I was taught that if they give birth the way humans do, they are mammals. surely that is not how they are teaching 1st graders, right?????? i didn't know a bat was a mammal. what are the different classes of animals? mammal, fish, reptile, insect, bird, amphibian...are there others?? and are these even right?? gosh...i need to go back to school  |

I was taught as you were. Mammals give birth to live young and produce mother's milk. It sound like her assignment is to just say yes or no if I understand correctly. If so it would be- Is it a mammal? frog-n reptile (or amphibian?) dolphin-y snake-n reptile butterfly-n insect pig-y duck-n bird kangaroo-y ant-n insect bat (I had no idea either.:p ) giraffe-y sheep-y goldfish-n fish lion-y Okay I had to edit twice because of spelling so maybe I shouldn't be offering help, lol. |
Well remember mammals have hair. Thats the way I remember it. heres a good link: http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/animal_classes.htm Hope I helped. |
I always go to ask.com when I cannot figure out what they are learning.. haha try this http://www.ask.com/web?q=What+Makes+...rc=6&o=0&l=dir |

I hear ya, though...it's pretty confusing at times! LOL |
Mammals have fur or hair. They have lungs (instead of gills, such as dolphins and whales) They don't lay eggs (a good way to put it for a first grader) They are warm-blooded And they produce milk for their young Those are the main classes of animals. Their are more complex ones but, I don't think that they teach that in first grade And yes a bat is a mammal. |
the only one that has stumped me are ducks. Ducks are part of the animal kingdom...so my guess is that makes them mammals...though they lack the typical fur and milk... No argument...just confusion on my part. |

i just can't believe we are trying to explain this to a 6 year old. trying to explain the type of birth cycle, the type of milk....WHOA!!!!!!!!! i tried explaining it like this...as found on that site that kelsi shared... The answer is – MILK! If an animal drinks milk when it is a baby and has hair on its body, it belongs to the mammal class. but it still confused her. i sent her teacher an email. i'm not sure how to explain this the right way to her   |

luckily she is a super smart kid and catches on quick, but i still kinda think this is a bit much :( :( |
yup i think you guys have got it now. mammals are animals with hair, that produce fully formed babies that drink milk. frog - no dolphin - yes snake - no butterfly - no pig - yes duck - no kangaroo - yes, but are more commonly referred to as marsupials (tho i don't think a first grader would get that so stick with mammal) ant - no bat - yes giraffe - yes sheep - yes goldfish - no lion - yes |
