It is crazy. I think it is kept to a minimum of details, though. My son is in first grade this year also and is doing word problems in math too! Thank goodness he understands it! Sometimes I think they are pushing these kids to the limit...when he was in Kindergarten last year, it was all academic. When I was in Kinder, all I remember doing was play!!!

I was confused about the ducks too. Seems like their are more exceptions to the rules from when I was a kid (which was not very long ago, I'm 21), but it seems as if they are mammals.

yep. i agree. Trinity is reading her bedtime stories to ME. it's crazy. she was doing this in kindergarten. she finished kindergarten reading at level 14! they were expected to finish at level 4. so she must be doing good. supposed to be at level 16 by the end of this year.

it's crazy...they really dont even have recess time. only about 2 days a week. i think those are the days that she gets in trouble for talking!! i cant' say i blame her!!

another thing about this...how many 1st graders know how bats are born and what they eat when they are born?? heck, i'm almost 30 and didn't know anything about that LOL

the bats one threw me waaay off :) is a mouse a mammal? i dont think they drink milk...but they are born live and with hair, right??

A duck is not a mammal, but a bird. If you guys are referring to the duck-billed platypus on the website page, it is not the same thing as a duck.

No, it's not too much for first grade.:) Remember, they don't understand the entire story as we do. All they know are the very simple facts and they relate them to what you've taught them about animals and people. So, if you haven't taught or let them learn kinky things,:rolleyes: then you're good to go.

My daughter told me in kindergarten that mammels were "little hairy animals that came from their mommy's tummies where it was warm and drank milk." I'll never forget that. Made perfect sense to her.:D

yup a mouse is a mammal too. if you think about it, mice are born with their eyes closed and ears closed just like puppies and kittens (tho puppies and kittens have hair). mom has to take care of them and feeds them milk

they feed them milk???? i had no idea. i used to have pet mice...when i was a kid...and i dont remember them drinking milk from the mommy. maybe i just dont remember...i do have a horrible memory LOL

It's always amazing to me what they expect them to do at such a young age. Somehow though the kids are usually able to do it. The work is scary to me, to them it's just normal.

Wow, I can't believe that was your first graders homework. I teach first grade and I have never assigned that... I stick to the basics - math and spelling, and of course nightly reading.

Did you daughter remember talking about it in class? I view homework as a way to review the work we do in class.

I looked it up. And i have seen both sides. Folks saying that ducks are mammals and some saying that they aren't. I myself at first thought would not think that they are (As you can see in my first reply, I listed the characteriistics as to what I have learned about mammals) but, when I saw the post stating that they were i decided to look it up. If you take my word then, no they aren't. But, it is obvious the internet can be misleading at times.

I actually never learned in school what a mammal, reptile, etc is. Isn't that crazy? They never taught it to us...and i still really don't know but thanks to you guys im learning lol i just knew that mammals have hair and reptiles, most are green:confused: I know, it's sad lol
