Losing my mind Okay now I have this fifteen year old son Christian who is always hitting me up for money. Now, I'm not made of money! He has his drivers permit so he can drive on the street with me or my husband Andy. He wants a Porsche for his birthday which is in December, now what do you think I am going to say! Well I said Christian do you see your father or me driving a Porsche? No, he said. Then why should you get one? 'Cause I'm turning 16. Do you know how much teenage car insuranace costs? A lot. Yeah, no Porsche, no car until your 18. I am nuts??????? |
No i dont think you're nuts. I'm 20 and my mom hasn't gotten me a car, she says until i finish college. |
I'm 31 and my parents still haven't bought me a car. :p |

P.S. Assuming he wasn't kidding---you are not nuts! |
yes I have been there too, it's a hard time in a parent life, my daughter drove me insane from time she was 15 she wanted a 66 mustange, thats all I heard, how everone else had a car and she was the ONLY ONE who did not have one, long story short she didn't get her mustang until after high school and then she realize it was a money pit and sold it 3yrs latter, she had to pay 1/2 of her insurance and after 3 speeding tickets she had to pay all her insurance, and 1/2 of the repair bills I am so glad I am past those years, now If I could get Hubbie past his childhood I would be OK. |
I had to work and buy my own car!! It was a junky car but it lasted into 2 years of my marriage lol..it was a good ol' car!! Dawn |
Why should parents buy their kids a car in the first place....convenience for the parents is pretty much the only reason. My son turned 16 last Dec. '06. He has walked the neighbors corn fields since he was 8 or 9 years old and picked up corn. I bought an antique corn sheller at an auction for $69 he would shell the corn, put it in a plastic tub and then we would take it to the grain elevator and they would pay him for the corn. He saved up his money. Last year was his first year detassling and degroguing corn. He saved up his money. He bought his own...very nice used car, paid cash and is now working a part-time job while keeping his grades up. I always told him...your father and I can't afford to buy you a car...you want one..work and save up for it...he did. |
Tell me about it! I have TWO 16 yr old son's Christian & Brian they both have their license and make remark's allll the other kids parents bought them a car. The most they can hope for is to pay insurance and drive one of ours. It's 400.00 A MONTH to add them to our insurance. They both work, I am thinking for Christmas paying two months of insurance for them and that will give them time to pay each month. Angie |
I don't think parents should buy their kids cars.... help maybe, but just givee it to them, no. My mom made me pay for my car. My sister (who is 20 yrs older than me), cosigned for it so I could get a better interest rate since mom's credit wasn't the best from owing a bunch of bills when she had cancer. I worked everyday after school and on the wknds to make payments on my 1997 Jeep cherokee. Mom would help a tiny bit the interest. When I was 20 it hydroplaned and hit a tree and almost killed me. I only had a yr left to pay on it, but by the time the insurance took out deductables and paid GMAC what I owned on the car I was left with $800. Not enough to replace it so I had to buy another car and start making payments on it. It is CRAP and has been broken down for 8 mnths, so it looks like I'm going to have to began making car payments on another car soon. BUT... I appreciate my vehicle alot more than most whos parents handed it to them. |

When I turned 16, my mom handed me a car. I didn't have to pay for anything on it. It was time for her to get a new car, so she gave me her 96' Toyota Camry. My mom had the means to do it, and I guess she thought I deserved it. I carried a 4.0 gpa all through highschool, worked and played softball. When I was 18, my dad bought me a Mustang that I didn't pay for either. I moved out when I was 19 (completely, financially on my own) and I have since bought a brand new car on my own (no co-signing!). I live in California where rent is a grand for a one bedroom apartment, and I can honestly say, I've never once asked my parents for help. So even though, I had 2 cars handed to me, I didn't turn out thinking my parents should give me things. I work and go to school full-time, and pay for my own car. So, for everyone that thinks kids shouldn't be handed a car because they'll be spolied brats.... not everyone is the same! |
Well, I was given a nice used car by my parents when I was 16, and then my granddaddy bought me a new car when I graduated high school which i still have now. I don't know what I would have done if my family hadn't bought cars for me because I sure couldn't have bought one on my own. I think parents should buy cars for their kids as long as they can afford it... Not saying it should be a porsche but at least a decent car. If your son really asked for a porsche he must have a serious reality problem unless you are pretty wealthy. I think most teenagers would be happy with any car so long as it's a decent one. |
Well, add up the value of all the cars in my immediate family and we couldn't make ONE month's payment on a porsche!! Are you kidding me??? |

Dad bought me a very old used car that was in good shape at an auction when I was 17. The ONLY reasons were that it sold dirt cheap and he wanted me to stop borrowing Mom's car. LOL. I loved it though. Then after my divorce he gave me a car he had intended to trade in when mine got wrecked and I couldn't afford another one. He wasn't rich and would have died laughing at the thought of buying one of his kids a porsche! LOL Personally I want a Solstice!!!!!! |
We raised 6 sons, all of whom had to earn their own money and also buy their own car if they wanted one. I think when they are taught this type of responsibility, then they appreciate what they have a lot more. I also taught all of my sons how to cook and clean and they all went on to become very well rounded adults and the ones that are married are wonderful husbands and fathers who are teaching their kids the same responsibilities. |
