My parents are VERY VERY generous to me and my sister. They always have been. My mother even gave me $30,000 towards my house. BUT...when I was younger, I really didn't appreciate things as much as I do now. So at that time, they made my sister and I buy our own cars. Good luck! And if you decide to buy him a car, I'd definitely say NO Porsche. |

As far as a Porsche, surly he was joking? Maybe he thought he's shock you by asking so when he asked for a Toyota it would sound very reasonable.:p |

:thumbdown I really think if your son is unreasonably asking for a car like that for his 16th birthday. Then maybe you have been giving him What Ever he wants all his life?? The reason most Kids are the way they are today is because parents Just Give them things like this. Has he earned it? Not talking $$ I'm talking behavior, Gades, and the such. To the poster that her parents did give the camery to. I think you Earned it :) And It was NOT a Porshe :) |
My oldest son is 12 and is already talking about driving. Well my hubby and I have an argument that has been going for 12 years, I don't want my son to get his lis. till he graduates because he is too much like me and won't stay at school if he had a car and the kids here driving at 16 they can't see over the dash! we did tell him that he had to have a job, we would match him for whatever he saved for his car or help him restore one but that he would have to pay for his own insurance. He thinks thats fine (for now). |
We didn't give cars to any of our four children. We kept extra klunkers for them to use AS LONG AS THEY WERE IN SCHOOL, but they were always ours and were returned to us shortly after graduating from college. And, yes, at one time, we had SIX vehicles on our insurance policy. |

I never got anything like that when I was younger. I had to scrimp and save to get a beater that lasted me a year. My parents just couldn't financially swing it, so I understand. I don't see anything wrong though with giving a responsible, considerate, and grateful child a car if the parents have the means to do it. It would have made my life easier, hehe. |
My parents bought my first car and my brothers. I got mine shortly after I turned 16 and my brother actually got his at 15. We didn't have the most fancy cars but they made sure it was nice and reliable. I am grateful for everything they ever gave us but my brother isn't like that. He thinks everything should be handed to him on a silver platter. Within a few months of my parents buying his truck he wanted something different. The rule was my parents would by our first car and help us maintain it as long as we were in school. I had that first car for 5 years and I just got rid of it. It was still running, but the AC unit went out. Kids just don't understand how hard it is to save money sometimes. They will learn once they get out on their own. |

Not everyone is the same. I had 2 nice cars given to me scott-free by the time I was 18... and I am in NO way ungrateful, nor do I not know the value of money. I don't think its the parents responsibility to give their kid a car, but if the kid is deserving and the parents can do it, why not?? Plus, its just something extra they can take from you if you mess up!! |
What about earning the $ for a car. My son didn't earn the money in school but my two daughter's did. Each bought their own car in their Senior year with their own money. They were cheerleaders, carried good grades and worked after school and on Saturday's after the football games. In three years, by their senior year, each had enough money for a good car. They also paid for their own car insurance. Today my oldest daughter's two children bought their own cars also in their senior year. Both brand new cars. Yes, they earned their own money also. Hard work does pay off. Plus, they appriciate it because they earned it. |
No he's just being a teenage boy. I'd tell him he'll be lucky if he gets a hoopty with bald tires, and that will be when he has a job to pay for it. |
