Strange question I know...but I have to ask! OK, so I live in East Texas and have recently bought a house. After the first month lizards started showing up in my house. I really do not like them or any reptile! So this morning I found a garden snake in my kitchen. I know you are wondering what in the world this has to do with Yorkies...well let me tell you! I know that cats will kill/deter snakes and lizards, but will dogs do the same? I am not really a cat person but I have to do something because I live alone and I am not too fond of these creatures! Any advice would really help! Scared of creepy crawlies! |
do you already have a Yorkie? or are you implying you are considering buying one to hunt these reptiles? Yorkies were originally bred to hunt mice, but I would never buy one for that cause now... :thumbdown IMHO |
My guys are major lizard hunters! Don't know what they would do with one if they actually caught it but they sure chase the heck out of them. Come to think of it I have found a tail in one of their beds one time.... yuck. |
No no no...I am not trying to get a Yorkie just for the simple purpose of hunting reptiles. I used to have one growing up and have been thinking about getting one. However, I have been really busy with work and have been rethinking the matter since I am not home alot right now and I didn't think that would work well with a new dog in the house. You see I am just having these pest problems and everyone keeps telling me to get a cat. But I don't like cats. I want a Yorkie! |

Mine chase flies or anything litle thay can. I am sure thay are great lizard hunters :D but I would not get a Yorkie just so they can hunt down yucky reptiles or insects and I would do my best to keep them away from them. Who knows what they can cach from ferrel animals. Quote:
I would suggest you try to get rid of any pests or reptiles before you bring a Yorkie into your home...You don't want your new baby to possibly get sick or choke or who knows what??? |
What kind of lizards are they? We get little geckos around here. When she was younger, Sadie actually caught one & bit the tail off. Ick. I am SUCH a girl about that stuff & was FREAKING out. Good luck both with getting your baby and getting rid of the pests! |
My boys love to chase crickets...They think that is the neatest thing..... I would check with a Pest Control company. |
There are some places I'm sure you could call and have spray your house for these certain things. I'd be scared to death. |

My kids would be in HEAVEN...my skin kids that is LOL..we had to PAY for a pet lizard here in Ontario lol...I want to live where the lizards come to me..for FREE!! lol... Dawn |
I contacted a pest control company when we moved in this house about the Skinks (really big lizards) and they said all they could do is put down those sticky traps where they get stuck and die :( so I couldn't do it. They do scare me though. One time I saw one on the back of the couch eye balling my Cockatiels. I yelled for one of the kids to come get it. They are fearless. |
I have had pet lizards, crabs, mice, hamsters, a frog and my partner use to have a snake. It is not the same as a wild reptile and the germs and diseases they might carry and transmit to your Yorkie if you allow your precious baby-to-be to hunt and eat it  ... some are even poisonous! Also, salmonella and other bacterias...??? Would you take that chance with your Yorkie and allow them to eat one??? |
my pups chase anything!!! i try not to let them tho! skoshi found a huge rat in our back yard!!! hiding in behind an old dog house. when i took kiele out the other night she was chasing something so i called her inside and she came and was rubbing her face with her paws so i thought she had ants on her but it was a huge water spider!!! |

I think maybe you should have someone come and find out how they are getting into your house. But is you don't think you like reptiles, wouldn't it be worse to have them running thru your house with a yorkie hot on their heels? Thank goodness we don't have those problems up her in the Northeast! |
I am sorry no help!!! But if I had reptiles in my house, I would be checking around the house to make sure there are no holes for them to get it!!! I would FLIP out. |

My backyard is very tropical and green. I would not be lying if I said I most likely have about 300 living at any one time in my backyard. My Bella is in heaven. She has her favorite hunting places. I try to watch her when she goes out and trust me she catches them often just due to the fact we have so many. I have to catch her and pry them out of her mouth. I take stool to the vet often cus i am so afraid she will pick up a parasite or something. He does preventative treatment for worms too. |
Im from East Texas too.. Welcome to YT. We have 3 cats that live outside to take care of anything that might get in the house. Its nice to have them outside, Im not much of a cat person either. I just dont like the litter box lol. If you do get cats for the outside make sure you get them fixed so they dont have babies. Males will run off so a female would be better. So get a cat for outside and a Yorkie for inside, then no more Critters!!! |
