I really don't get the thinking of "We have rights" You don't have the right to expose anyone to second hand smoke. We choose not to smoke for a reason. I agree with almost all the bans, I think the changes are long overdue. |
I still find it kind of funny that smoking bans are the hot topic in city and state legislature when dunk driving is still hugh problem. IMO more people die from drunk drivers than people smoking around them. |
Around here you are still asked for a smoking preference when you go to eat, but I know there is one part of town where it is illegal to smoke except in a bar or on your own property. You can have designated smoking areas at work, but even they have restrictions on where they have to be, etc. |
I think Arkansas is pretty much a smoke free state now. They first past a law that there could be no smoking in any place that served food...which included a lot of clubs/bars. These places had to decide if they wanted to serve food or allow smoking. Then, I believe that it was passed where you could NOT smoke inside any public building and at that, you had to be so many feet away from the entrance to a building. I want to say that some of the local colleges/universities also went smoke free. Most of those now are not just smoke free, but they are tobacco free too (many no pipes, smokeless tobacco, like chew, copenhagen, etc.). |
The county where I live, you are not allowed to smoke in restaurants or any public places. You also have to be a certain amount of feet away from the entrances. I went to school in Athens, GA, which is quite a college party town. While I was there, they banned smoking in the bars and restaurants. As far as I can tell, the ban didn't hurt any business at the bars and I love being able to go out without hacking my lungs out or having blood shot eyes from all the smoke in the bar. I actually never went out as much before because of all of the smoke. It would get into my hair and stay there for DAYS! So gross.. |

Fact: Annual deaths from alcohol related crashes: In 2006 17,607 Annual deaths from smoking ( in U.S.): 440,000 It looks like smoking is the biggest killer.....a smoker also loses 12 years from their life... Cigarettes contain 4000 chemicals, 200 of them are considered poisonous and 60 are considered carcinogenic... 171,900 new cases of lung cancer yearly 157,200 will die Other cancers connected to cig.'s: mouth, esophageal , stomach, kidney, cervix, bladder, pancreas,.... Your smoking causes about 53,000 deaths annually from heart disease and lung cancer in non-smokers.... That's quite a lot of deaths just so some of us can enforce their "rights" to smoke in an enclosed area....If you can contain the smoke to stay in just your personal space their would be no problem, but since smoke knows no boundaries and I am unable to hold my breath during our entire dinner, I for one hope to see all public smoking banned, for the welfare of the workers, children, and all the non-smoking patrons... |

Here in NJ, people aren't allowed to smoke in public places. Personally, I'm glad. There are designated smoking areas. If I'm walking around, I don't want to gag on someone else's smoke. and I'm allergic to it, so it's the most miserable thing in the world. |

I agree smokers have the right to do it, it is their choice, but my 14month old and my 4 year old have no say in the matter, and I HATE them being exposed to second hand smoke. They have to rely on me and my husband to remove them from the area...and if it is outside already, say a park, is that fair? For the smokers, say you don't drink, or do drugs. How would you feel if it was forced on you or your children? I am not trying to be confrontational, just trying to offer a different perspective. If it is something you are against that effects your health, and it was forced on you, wouldn't you want laws to protect you as well? |
