Hurassing phone calls I have been getting weird phone calls all day long, at first I didn't give it any thought, but around 6pm they started to get creepy. My husband had left for work and my 11 year old answered the phone while I was talking to my sister as she was picking her girl up. He asked the person for their name and he was cussed at so he hung the phone up. My older son got on the phone to make a phone call 2 minutes later and got a beep and answered it and it was the weird caller. They asked for his mother and he said I was busy and asked to take a message and the guy got all mean with my son saying I was on the porch . He hung up on the caller. So my sister got the next call and told him to stop calling when he made sexual remarks, and hung up the phone. 5 minutes later they called again and my sister yelled at them and said that we were calling the police. So I did. They gave me a incident # and her badge # and was told to call my phone provider to have a trace put on the phone. I called cable and was put on hold , almost 10 minutes later the dude told me that they can't do that, I have to get a court order to have the # released to police to press charges for phone harassment. I haven't gotten any more but I am home at night with my kids by myself and its scarry because that guy caller made comments like he knew our routine! I called my mom to vent my frustrations with cable and she called them up to find out what we could do now and I have to pay to have Call Screener put on! Anyway thanks for letting me complain but I also think that others should know that Cable phone will not trace calls but if you have a court order then they will release the #"s. |
wow...that is very scary!! please keep us posted!! i will be thinking about you...i hope nothing comes of it and it is just some neighborhood kid being stupid. |
i wrote a thread about this a while ago with a similiar incident.. i called my phone company to ask if i could have this # blocked and they said no... and to call the non emergency 911 line so i did cuz i was getting a little scared.. and they told me theres nothing they could do about it but to change my #???? they told me to call my phone company and i said they told me to call u!!!! i got suggestions from ppl on YT like to blow a whistle into the phone... i had the whistle ready but for some reason after that.. the harasser stopped.... i hope urs will stop too once that person gets a life  |
That's scary. Make sure you have all doors and windows locked and have a phone by you at all times. Stay safe, |
I've been a victim of that in the past. Since my phone service is through our local company there was a 2 digit number I could dial after each call which would trace the call. I kept a record of date, time etc and after 3 traces could go to the telephone company sign papers and then they would turn it over to the police. The last call I had I was very calm and firm when I told him the calls were being traced and I would be filing charges if he called again. So far he hasn't called and it's been several months. I doubt the guy knows you can't get a trace on them so I'd use the above tactic and see what happens. I know how you feel because the calls always came in when I was alone and it is scary. |
The person calling me is using a voice changer and sounds like a machine, but then will say some words with a normal voice, it's creepy and scarry because my husband works nights. Ny husband said that the next time they call I am to tell them that the pone is being traced and we will be pressing charges. I get scared when my phone rings now!! |
OMG! That is so scary! We use Southwestern Bell and I'm able to block calls coming in. Maybe you should switch phone companies. ??? Please be safe. This world is full of whacked out people! |
Do you have caller ID? I know Verizon has this but, not sure if other phone companies carry this feature..... If you press (I think it's *67) it activates a call intercept. If the person calling has an unlisted or private number they will have to press *82 before they enter the rest of your number or they won't be able to bet through. This way (if you have caller ID) the number will show up. You could give it to the police. |
Becareful about saying the phone is being traced.. Not sure if thats totally legal if your not actually doing it.. I think I heard that somewhere.. But anyways if you can after looking up some laws record your phonecalls. If they call again answer the phone say "Do not call my house again.. I have already called the police and we are pressing charges it would be in your best interest to not call again"... I believe the phone company keeps phone records a minimum of two weeks.. So record the times when they called get a court order and find out when they called and I think you might be able to find out where they called from.. If its a wierd number like 00123456789 its from Skype.. An online based calling company.. I'm not sure how well you can trace those calls because it is international.. Your best bet is just to tell them not to call again and that your pressing charges.. Most likely its some teens who don't have anything better to do and they will hopefully just stop calling you.. Well I hope everything works out.. There are some lawyers in my family if you need me to find out some info for you just ask :) |

I was told to say this when I called the phone company...It is NOT illegal to say this. And even if it was illegal the only person to report this would be the person making the calls..and I don't think he would do that. |
Okay.. I know that in is different in different states.. Along with recording people with out their permission etc. Anyways Have they called back or anything? |

I had the cable company activate the call screen feature for now. Monday my husband is going to have it were we get the court order for the cable phone company to release the #'s to the police. I have caller ID so I have written down all of the times I got a call from the creepy dude he's called 23 times:eek: . I got one more call before I called cable back to activate the screen and do not disturb feature. I took the advice of one poster and had a whistle handy, I don't think he liked it but oh well! I do not think I will be able to sleep tonight and I told my mom to be prepared for a late night chat! She said that she would come over and sit with me if I wanted so I might take her up on the offer! She knows that I am her chicken little, I always call her when I am scared of something! |
That's ridiculous. My cable phone company won't even let me make collect calls to my home phone. Great service right? |
You did the right thing by having the call screen activated. I worked for the local telephone company for 8 years and blowing the whistle into the phone was the first thing I told people to do. Next was the call screen. (Most of the time, it's kids getting a cheap thrill and the whistle stops 'em in their tracks) If the calls continue after that, the call screen is the next step. At the company I worked for, you did have to get a court order for a trace to be put on the line - but it's not hard to get one at all and it's worth it for your peace of mind. Make sure you're careful with your personal safety when your hubby is at work: doors and windows locked, blinds closed, etc. I have a permit to carry a pistol and keep it on me at all times. (My son was a cop for 9 years and insisted) Also, if anything feels "off" at all --- call 911!! That's what it's for and if by chance someone was watching you they'll get the message really quickly that you're not playing around. Cops would rather check out your house and property when you call than have to investigate after something happens. Sorry to be so long - it just bothers me that you're being harrassed. |
That is good to know though. Just one more reason for me to not go cable on the phone. But I will say this: phone company or cable company, neither would be able to release the phone number to you if you had it traced. They also cannot tell you who it is making the calls. But if they feel it is breaking the law, they can turn it over to the police. I had a company that was sending us fax calls at times like 2am and 4am forever. If you know how some of those work, if a fax machine is unsuccessful, the call will go into the queue and retry until it is successful. Since it is a home number and not a fax machine, of course it was unsuccessful. But I would get these calls that would come like every 5 minutes all night long. We DID have the trap placed on the line. The ph company would put a trap on, and we had to log when the calls came. When it was found who was making the calls, neither the ph company nor the police would do anything--even under it being called "harrassment" (and if getting middle of the night fax calls every five minutes isn't harrassment, I don't know what is?!!!) In the end, we had to change our phone number. It is unfortunate that that is the way it is, but they won't block the calls or anything. No matter what gets found out, in the end, your only result will be they will suggest you get your number changed. They won't do squat about it. |
Thanks for the advice. I did not sleep good at all I talked to my mom till 3:30am then my husband called and talked to me till 6 am That is when I fell a sleep. I was back up at 8 but at least with the phone features I will not be getting any calls. It was scarry because they seemed to know what was going at the time of the call, like my son told them I was not available and they said she was out on the porch, and I was out talking to my sister. They even said something about the stray cat we have been feeding! It was scarry, but we will be getting the court order and press charges for phone harassment. The officer did do a few drive by's past the house to check on things wich was good to know to. Maybe Mr Creepy saw that and knows we will not put up with this. |
That is terribly scary...he can obviously see you so he lives close or knows you?? Have you met anyone new recently..at work or something? Someone that might be infatuated with you? I hope you can find out who this person is..it will be interesting to find out if you know this person at all or not...good luck with finding the creep!!!!! Dawn |
Goodness that is SO creepy!!! PLEASE stay safe!!! Is there any way you could go stay with someone else at night while your hubby isn't there??? At least until this weirdo stops calling??? |
My mom said that she would come stay at my house if I need her. I have 4 son's ages almost 14 to age 10 so it would be harder for us to go to someones house at night wile my husband works. My oldest slept out on the couch so that he could be by me last night. He fell asleep at about 2am. But by then I was a bit more calmed down and we did have the police do drive by's to check in on us. It made us feel safer for sure! I have my phone on call screening so only people who have a pin # can call , all other calls go to voice mail. Also at night I can activate a Do not disturb feature so no calls can come in and only calls going out can. I have not checked the voice mail yet , I think my husband can check for me! The caller did call like 23 times yesterday:eek: Monday my husband is going to go see what needs to be done to get a court order for cable to release the phone numbers to the police. I hade to right down all times that the caller called so we can give it to the police . My husband said he does not care who it was they are having charges pressed against them because I should not of had to been so scared for my kids and myself like that. He also is not working tonight, the boat got pushed back and so he will be home tonight! It was just scarry because the person calling seemed to know what was going on at my house at the time of the calls! |
Wow !!! I Had something like this happen on my cell phone. after I had posted a rescue pup for rehome on YT it only happened once the call was blocked but my cell co said they could trace the # If the police ask it is free if I wanted it the cost would be $ 20.00 . I hope yours gets resolved. BTW MY Number is no longer on YT Admin was so nice and took it off. Now I will never make it public knowledge again. |
This is the first time we have had a published phone # our selves, I think I want it changed and unpublished again! You guys are all so caring, thank you all for information and support that you have given me! A few have Pm me with very good information ! Thank you! |
what about *69?? maybe it is different in the US, but here i can push *69 and it will tell me the last number that called and then ask if i want to call it back. |
* 69 did not work because it comes up as Private Name Private number. We checked the voice mail and they left a message on it. The Police informed us to save the message. If they leave any message we have to save it so the police can hear them. So far we only got the one call today. with the call screener every thing goes to voice mall unless you have the pin # to call in . I only have my mother and my inlaws with it and also the police department has it. I have to give it to the boy's school or I could just tell them to call the cell phone's to get me or my husband. I am thinking I want to change my # now. We'll have to see how things work out after we get the court order going. |
I'm sorry your going through this. I'd be scared to death if someone knew what I was doing and when. That would mean they were close. Are any of your neighbors mad at you? My daughter had someone call her and say he was in jail and getting out soon. He told her he'd be coming to visit her when he got out and he even knew her first name. Her husband started answering the calls and thank goodness they stopped. |

I would suggest to get alarm services too. We use brinks and they are great. I turn it on even when I'm taking a shower and hubby is not home. There are some many wierdos out there! Be careful and stay safe. |
That's scary! Could it be someone nearby, in your neighborhood? |
