Microchipping (yes, again) In light of how many Yorkies are being stolen from their homes, and literally snatched from their people's arms, I'd begun to seriously consider going against my instincts and microchipping Abigail. Then, I ran across this: Microchip Implants cause tumors. I'm looking to add another female to our family. I hope the breeder we choose does not practice chipping, just because it's the 'in' thing. |
They had some very sketchy data in that article. I would like to see some data of how many pets have been recovered and returned to their owners due to a microchip, and see hard data on exactly how many animals(like 1:10,000?) have either gotten a tumor from a chip or died because of a chip, and then decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. |
Hmmmmm all the hype "stories" aside. I can PERSONALLY say that I know of THREE people whos dogs were returned due to Microchipping. One of them being mine! I can also tell you of two whos stollen dogs were LOCATED but NOT RECOVERED because of LACK OF IDENTIFICATION! A microchip would have solved this and these two dogs would have been returned to their rightfull owners! Instead the theif and person who found the other dog who were allowed to KEEP the dogs! I have NEVER personally known anyone who has had a sick, injured dog or had their dog die due to micro chipping.... Maybe we should post a poll and see how many people pwrsonally know anyone who has had any of these GOOD or BAD issues with Microchipping. All of the "stories" have been published by people with hidden agendas... I would rather hear the facts from the public, from people without their hands in the cookie jar. we all know that SOMEONE funds those studies and those NUMBERS come from somewhere! lol |

I wonder if the study has been extended to all brands of microchips. The article only mentioned one company. I think that much more research needs to be done, and statistics need to be compared to the number of dogs benefitting from microchipping. If only 1-10% of animals contract tumors from the microchips, but say 40% of dogs with microchips have benefitted from such a program, then I would absolutely take the risk. Both of my dogs are microchipped by HomeAgain. Hmm, maybe I'll start a poll... |
Yeah...and saccharine causes cancer too...in lab rats that are given the amount of saccharine that equals their body weight! A lot of these "studies" are a bunch of bull! I don't believe that microchips are not safe..I haven't heard of ANY problems with microchipping other than migrating which in itself did not become a problem, since it is right under the skin. Also, it's not like these microchips are placed deep into muscle tissue or into organs...they are right under the skin! I still can't believe people are afraid to microchip their dogs... I would much rather have my dog microchipped than take the chance of losing my dog forever. |
Thank you for bringing this up. A family member just called to tell me about an article in the Washington Post (Associated Press) about this. I was trying to defend their use. I have been doing research tonight about the issue. I agree that many more animals are saved by this device than hurt. More testing MUST be done to make them safer, but we don't need to scare people away from using these devices. The research I've seen has only been on rats and mice. |

I was initially concerned about having Sadie microchipped because of random articles linking the chips to cancer. But I decided to go ahead and have her microchipped on the advice of my vet - who I have absolute faith in. If she's ever lost, I certainly want the comfort of knowing that there's a way to trace her. Everyone has they're own opinion about this though, and I totally respect everyone's opinions. |

There was a story on Good Morning America this morning. You can go to their site for more info. It was interesting. They were especially talking about the use in humans. They said that there was not much information about there being a problem in pets.:animal36 |
We all have to weigh risks to benefits when it comes to these things ...each of us is going to have to make a judgment call for our own pets welfare....most things carry a risk, how much your willing to take is up to each individual....this was just shown this morning on GMA... http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=3575737 Just because the FDA approves something in no way does it imply it's safe...the FDA has a terrible track record for approving drugs that where later pulled from the market after killing or injuring people, so just going by their recommendations is unreliable...there has to be an unbiased party for reliable info when it comes to doing studies on safety...Quite frequently the people in charge of passing approval have a financial interest in getting these things on the market... |
