I learned how to ride a 2-wheel bike there, took a few spills off the end of the porch as the chaise lounge collapsed and enjoyed hours of sitting both on the bench and on the steps. Here is one of my favorite photos of my sisters, my brother and I (before little bro came along) taken on those steps. This is from 1967 and I am the 2nd from the left...... |
Jody that pic is so cute!...All the girls have the same outfit, like little house on the prairie;) .... |

I started this thread because I had to wash down the porch yesterday, it was so full of webs and dust and I got to thinking how the porch seems to be coming obsolete...a lot of the newer homes don't have porches, no old wooden screen doors to bang either..... What a shame....We have what we call a fire pit out back and when the weather gets cooler like now, we sit out there around the fire and talk and laugh...the grandkids come over last week and wanted to do smores and they where so excited ....so simple, yet so bonding for them...Without realizing it I am now creating their memories for them.... |

I hate living in the city, (if you really call this city living). Now I live in town and it's noisy. I've always lived out in the country so that's all I know. My brother and I would play in the woods behind our house and go fishing. We loved it! I remember mom standing on the back porch calling for us to come in and we begged her to let us stay a little while longer. When we would camp my brother and I would catch lightning bugs and keep them in an old plastic tub and poke holes in the top. Gosh times have really changed! Even since I was a kid. The kids around where I live just get in trouble. A boy around 8 or 9 figured out how to flip our switch on the electric meter and we were without power for like half of a day. I told hubby I know we paid the bill, they cashed the check. So we called the electric company and they said that the switch was flipped. The boy admitted he and other kids did it. When I was that age all I was thinking about was getting a new Barbie or riding my bike! It's really sad. |
I started cleaning the cobwebs off my porch on Saturday but had to go in because of the hornets! They apparently have a next in my wicker rocker! I have got to remember to stop and get some spray so I can finish cleaning and get ready for cool weather! I love to have my coffee out there on Saturday mornings! On one side I have a porch swing and a wicker rocker with a table, and on the other I have a 4 pc Wicker settee group! |
That smores reference reminded me of an incident last year, the G.Kids where doing the fire and smores thing and I had to go in the house to get a glass, the G.Kids come running in with a well charred marshmallow on a stick, GD ( who was 10) said , "Here Grandma!!".....I had to bite the bullet and eat the ash....after I swallowed it my Grandson ( who was 8 said )," We tried to give it to Lucky ( the dog) but all he did was licked it." ..... I went out to the fire to see if they where joking to I asked my DH if those kids let that dog lick that marshmallow first, they all started laughing, it was true...They had sent the kids in to do that to me :( |
Tilly's mom, you tell a kid now to go catch lightening bugs and they'll tell you your crazy....If we didn't have bugs to play with we would have been really bored as kids, I guess that's why most bugs don't bother me now.. |

porches I have lived in houses with all types of porches..ones in the back and front..but it has only been recently that I totally enjoy watching people..does this make me OLD??? My grandfather just about lived on his front porch the last 25 years of his life. In fact, my aunt used to drop him off downtown and he would sit on a park bench for hours while she shopped and ran errands. I had a physical some months back and if you can believe it I forgot to take my insurance card and ID..the receptionist was totally ticked off and showed it...after making me wait 30 mins, and no acknowledgement, my daughter went over and said.."Just for your information...you can make my mother wait all day and it won\'t bother her a bit..she will sit and watch people until you close"...the office had a patio, the sun was shining, breeze blowing, people coming and going..if I had brought a lunch I would have stayed all day...LOL It takes very little to make me happy...and a big porch is heaven!!! |
