French Manicure? Recommendations please... OK. I fess up. I am almost 47 and have never been to a nail salon and have never had a manicure. My girlfriend and I decided to pamper ourselves and get our nails done on Friday. My natural nails are short and brittle, so I want acrylic. I want them to stay rather short. I'm tossing around the idea of a French manicure. I don't want a lot of color, stickers, etc. I work in a professional environment so I don't want anything too flashy. What are your thoughts? What would you recommend for a first timer? |
French manicure is a good choice, but rarely a good idea on your own nails. But since you are doing acrylic, it should look nice. It's a very clean look & actually the only way I'll go now! I had them last year & had solar nails, which they don't have to paint...they automatically look French. |
I have the white tips on mine and they're beautiful. They have to be filled every 2-3 weeks to maintain them. Be prepared, they do trash your natural nails. This is going to be my last set after they grow out for awhile, I think I need to let my natural nails recouperate. |
Agreed... French manicure - white tips is a very classy hand. You want them to do it via airbrush rather than free hand if available. Its a cleaner and more even line. A very very pale sheer pink will cover the entire nail including the white tips so they dont look like they are glowing. Its all I wear. Hardly ever use full color |
I've been getting my nails done in a French manicure for about 5 years now. I much prefer it to color. When it starts to grow out or chip, you don't notice it as much. I would suggest however, instead of a 'French,' you get 'Pink and White.' Basically the same thing, except the non-white part is a clear w/ a slight pinkish tint insead of a nude color. Strait French seems to yellow after about a week...the pink doesn't. I hope that makes sense...:) |
I just had a pedicure and they did a French "manicure" on them! It looks really good....I was getting tired of having to change colors all the time this summer on my toes.....and never thought about this, but I love it! |
i love getting my nails done... i just really like the way they look! i get american they are the same as french but instead of the white tip its more of a pearl! Well anyways good luck! |
I like american better than french now for some reason. |
I have had my nail techs license for 13 yrs. I owned my own salon for 8 (I don't do nails anymore but, still have them done.) My suggestion would be to have the built in french. They still use tips on the nail (or you could have a form put on your natural nail and they could build the tip). They should use a very bright white on for the tip of the nail and make a nice sharp "C curve". Then use a natural pink on the nail bed. If this is done correctly you have a really pretty french manicure. Painting or, airbrushing, a french manicure is ok but it can wear off. Having a built in french will never wear off. Every other fill in they would do a back fill and redo the tips as they will grow out. Good Luck and please post a pic when they are done. I am curious to see what method they use. |
I too would do a french manicure for an office environment but I would caution you that if you are not one to fuss over your nails, you might not want to get acrylic. You have to have them filled at least every other week and when you finally decide to take them off, your nails are very damaged underneath. Like paper thin and they break real easy. That's been my experience anyways. I do like them myself as I am a nail biter and just can't do that with the acrylics but then I get sick of going to get them filled so it's a no win situation. Oh well, good luck whatever you decide. |
I love a french manicure. I like it done on my toes too :D |
I have them right now, actually! My natural nails never grow, so I get acrylic on them. I usually get the "pink and white" also. It's a different kind of acrylic so it doesn't turn yellow, and it is much stronger so they never break like the regular kind. They do it with two different powders..white on the tips and pink on the nail bed..plus, you dont have to wait for your nails to dry! |
I've been having a French manicure done for the last about 13 or 14 years...I don't have the usual just white, I have it airbrushed (and yes, it DOES wear off sooner than if you had a regular French done, but I get it done almost every week)...I have the "double V" done...wish I could figure out how to post photos here, b/c I have a picture of it. I also have a regular French done on my toenails only I ask for the white to be very thin. I never get tired of it and it always looks clean and professional. |
Ahhh yes.. I get it that way also.. and to make it even stronger and keep the shine longer.. I have a gel coat put over all of it, its it shiney and new like a fresh coat of clear and they lasted forever, they grew out before the tips showed any wear |

Whenever I'm doing something fancy (or if I'm in the mood) I go get acrylic nails. I would reccomend that you get them rounded, because that makes them look more real. Also, if they have it available, get the gel. It's just powder mixed in with this liquid stuff, but it also makes it look more real, and it helps it last longer. and I get a French everytime. So I'd reccomend that. :) EDIT: where I go to get mine done, they don't speak much english. Just enough to make some small talk and understand what I want done. and everytime it's flawless. :) |
I used to work in a nail salon and if you are going to go with Acrylics, personally I would go with gels since they are a lot easier on your natural nail. Either way in both of these you can get a two-tone which is a white trip with a pink overlay, this is like a permanent french manicure, it looks so much better than having the white and pink painted over top of the acrylic. Just a suggestion! Remember that acrylics and gels must be filled every 2-3 weeks. and every other time you fill you'll want to get a two-tone fill. |

I already have acrylic nails on now. So if I go in and say I want a "built-in French" do my acrylic nails have to be removed? |
No I doubt it they will just probably do your next fill using both the pink and white acrylic powder. That is just my guess, it probably also depends on how long your current nails are, etc. |
Yeah was going to agree with others ... acrylics totally ruin your natural nails. I had them twice in the past and both time I left them on for only 2 months and it took at least 6 months to get my real nails to start growing again. I do at home french on my real nails fairly often. I love the look, its very polished. I am lucky, i bit my nails sooooo bad until I was 23 years old. My doctor said that my nail beds and cuticles were so mangled that my nails would never grow and I stopped biting at 23 and my real nails are LONG and HARD as rocks! I am very lucky! I usually have to file them down once a week cuz they get too long to even type in a week. I would definately do the french though. Its perfect for work and play! Plus it feels elegant when you look down at your hands and see it. You'll like it a lot Im sure!!! |

I noticed some are recommending gel nails. Although they are less damaging to the natural nail and do look more natural they are not as durable as the acrylic. I also tried doing gel nails. They are great for someone who doesn't plan on keeping the nails on. I used to do these for brides and girls going to the prom. |

I did it! 2 Attachment(s) Well, I finally got the nails that mother nature could never give me. The jury is still out on the salon. I asked for "built in french". The owner in broken english said, "You want french tips?". I hesitated and said "yes", not sure if we were communicating. I think we communicated just fine! What do you think? Thank you again for all of your help. This could just get addictive, if it were not for the smell! |
Nice......something a nail tech told me.... Quote:
They look very nice. A nail tech told me once that the shape of your nail should match your cuticle shape.....so, I choose a square, with the edges a little rounded. This tends to not wear down between fill ins......and regarding color.....it kinda depends on my mood, and how long I have waited to get a whole new set...instead of a "fill in". I use color in the fall and winter because I think that the american french looks nice with a tan....it is a little less bright white.....looks more like your real nail. You will now be addicted like the rest of us!!!!! |

I LOVE the shape of them! |
