Has anyone owned a chihuahua? Well if I don't get a yorkie, I have enough money to purchase a chihuahua. I have done about 3 months worth of research on this breed and I wanted to know if any of you have had one. If so, what was it like? Any particular complaints? |
glad you asked that question i was thinking about getting one i personally have owned one but my neighbor has one i am going to ask her about it |
i don't own one personally, but i know most of the people i know that own chihuahua's say that they are real yappers.. that they become very possesive of their owners and get jealous easily, that's what i've heard. but hopefully you can find your yorkie... but with whatever breed you decide.. best wishes! :D |
My best friend owns a chi and you just thought a yorkie is NEEDY everything i have heard about this breed is they are so codependent its not even funny so if you have a lot of time and never plan on leaving it go for it. |

OMGosh!! are you serious poor baby |
Thanks for all the input everyone! |
I also considered a Chihuahua when I was researching small dogs. A relative had two, and they yapped constantly. They can also be easily injured, and I'm told they can be very nervous. Good luck!! |
My daughter has a chi. I thought that was an odd choice personally seeing she had 3 very little girls and chi's are known to sometimes be on the sharp side. How wrong was I? Trixie is a wonderful little girl! She has completely changed my view on chi's. She is way more independent than my yorkie who is like velcro ( which I love), She is cuddly when you want her to be, not at all nippy or sharp and in spending the month with my daughter if I heard her bark 5 times that's probably pushing it. I don't necessarily think you should pick out a breed of dog due to affordibility because you may have regrets and that could affect the out come with any dog that isn't a yorkie that was your first choice. My daughter specifically wanted a chi and it shows in how her dog is so happy and adjusted. Just make sure what ever breed you pick that you do your homework and buy from someone that is reputable because sometimes that half the battle. |
My boyfriends mom has one. And omg that thing is sooooo annoying!! all it does when ever we are there is yap and yap and yap!! And when shes eating he will sit there and whine and beg. But that could just be the way she raised him. Who knows. But I hope you can get a yorkie! They are just sooo cute! Good luck! :) |
A good friend of mine's parents had a chi and it was sooo mean. It would bite and snip at you, and growl the entire time. It also barked and shook like crazy! I personally didn't like it very much, but I think that it probably just requires attention different from that of say a yorkie. If Paris Hilton can take care of a chi though, it can't be that hard! |
My Rosie baby was a chi she was lovely, with early socialisation they make lovely dogs, she hardly ever barked and had the sweetest temprement with us her family but hated other dogs. She was more independant than Duncan (yorkie) and did everything all our other dogs did hated being carried she always wanted to walk with the big dogs. I found her very easy to care for in fact she was much less demanding than I was told she would be. |
We own a little long hair chi named Cosie. She is the sweetest little thing and although she is daddy's girl she loves us all. Some are nervous and some bark, best to check out the temperment of the parents though. She is our second chi. I think if you really want a yorkie you would be better to wait and save more money. You won't be as happy with your second choice. Windy and Lida Rose |
Do chi shed? |
I had a Chihuahua when I was younger, and let me tell you, I will NEVER own another again! They are needy, needy, needy!! If you are holding them and someone tries to touch you, watch out! The major problem that I had with mine that he never outgrew, was the fact that he would wee wee on anything that was fuzzy. I had to give up wearing slippers because the second he saw them, he would lift his leg and let it rip. Stuffed animals, rugs, carpets, blankets, you name it, he would pee on it. I could go on for days, but my advice is to wait until you have enough money to purchase your Yorkie. If you really want a Chihuahua, get a girl -- maybe she will have more manners and not wee wee on your slippers. |
I have 2 chi's and a yorkie. My Chihuahuas are great. They are extremely loyal and loving, very little maintenance. Like a yorkie, temperments are different in every dog. Mine are not yappy, well socialized little dogs. Its all how you train them and how they were bred. |

My friend had one and that thing was so mean! everytime i would go over there it would try to bite me!! then i knew someone else that had one and every time i was over there it would just shake because it was scared..not real sure that i'd ever get one! |
When I was a kid (not that long ago, just 50 years) we had two chihuahuas. They were always cold. The word Picky really stands out in my mind. One would only eat boiled hamburger meat, and the other would only eat boiled liver. As a kid I had to cut the liver up in tiny, tiny pieces. When we would put a sweater on them, they would fall over like they just had a heart attack. I'm sure they are the greatest for some, just not for me. |
They can be picky eaters but in my experience only as picky as their owners will allow them to be ;) At the end of the day they are dogs and should be treated like as such - they need to meet lots of people and lots of animals so they are not afraid or over cocky, only lots and lots of socialisation will make them good pets much the same as our yorkies really. |

Wasn't "aimed" at you in fact it was a good humoured (see the smilie) comment - generally when people have picky eaters and yes I have had one too - we have made them picky by giving into them too quickly, we made our own food for years so one of ours would eat looking back we caused her to be picky by changing her food each time she stopped eating if we had put down a food and left it she would have eaten it eventually as no dog will intentionally starve it's self. |

I also have 2 chi's a male and a female and I have had no problems. They have been with me for 6 years. They are both smooth coats mine are not yappy either and they get along with Remy. I have to agree it is all in how you train them and how they wre bred. |
I have a chihuahua and I LOVE her. She is the love of my life. She is always by myside. As a matter of fact she is in my lap right now. I love her so much I named my store after her :p . She returns every once of my love too. They really are the best dogs(beside yorkies) |
Owned by a Chi :animal-sm I too have a Chihuahua, Chiquita, who we call "Chic" or sometimes "Chicklet". She's a short hair, so she sheds very little. Mostly her hair comes off on shirts, etc. when she is held against you. In addition to her I have 2 Yorkies and a VERY LARGE Sheltie (Collie sized)and let me tell you he IS a super-sized sheder. Chic is extremely affectionate and gets along great with all the other dogs. They all have little quirks and mannerisms, just like humans do. My husband is her favorite and she is a little jealous of his lap. She lets everyone know where they can sit or can't sit. As to the barking...the Sheltie is the worst. He alerts the others and when someone goes by or comes to the door it sounds just like a dog kennel.:animal-sm :animal-sm :animal-sm :animal-sm |
I think the long-haired ones are cuter. The only one I know is named Paco and he is crazy as can be. Everyone thinks Stewie is crazy until they meet Paco. He bounces off the walls (literally). |

I am getting a Chi is November and I can't wait!! She is extremely well socialized and sweet!! She is already potty trained on wee wee pads (YAY!!!) and loves to play with her 2 Yorkies sisters and 1 Yorkie brother -- so I have no worries about her getting along with Codie and Tia. I've seen her in action in MANY home videos that Kathryn made for me and she LOVES to play with other dogs and is extremely affectionate!! But then again, she is a home rasied dog -- raised with her 4 sisters (from her litter), 3 Yorkies and 2 children. She isn't a puppy mill or pet store baby that was never socialized. I think that has a lot to do with her personality. I can't wait to bring her home!! :D |
I know someone who has a chihuahua...hes really fiesty you can't touch him when he sleeps or he growls at you. If a stranger touches his owner he bites their hand. He hates the other dogs that live with him and if you hug him he growls. |
wow I just came across this thread so you know I had to comment. I have them , breed them, and LOVE them! I disagree with many of the posters. Mine are the most people loving dogs I've ever met. Do they bark? Yes if someone comes to the door. Do my Yorkies bark? Yes, and even more than my chis. I love both breeds. Mine all get along together. I can't say a negative thing about my Chi's. Not a thing. |
