Now that I've had time to change my undies..... and calm down a bit.....I can tell yall about my wonderful walk this morning with Phoebi. I had just gotten back with Chan, put him in the house and took her down the road in the opposite direction of how I walked with Chan. She went about 100 yards, make her poop and we were heading back when I heard this very low "woof"....thinking on it now, I should have known. But I kept walking a bit and not a few seconds later did I hear an even louder "woof". Best way I can describe it is a "woof" but it's actually like a "huff" sound.... So I quickly bend down and scoop her up and look over my shoulder. Not 10 feet behind me is the BIGGEST BLACK BEAR I have ever seen!!!! They're not uncommon around here and I know all the proper protocol.....don't turn your back on them....walk slowly, while facing them.....:shocked7q Well THE HECK WITH THAT......this old bag ran as fast as she could the 200 feet to my front door and threw myself in!!!! :tongue3: He continued walking up the middle of the road like he owned it! (basically he did!) Came in called the police to come and document his visit but they didn't see him. God only knows where he is now. So we're locked in the house like a bunch of criminals.....too afraid to even go out by the pool. I figure he'd think that was a big water bowl! :D Oh forget to say....Rachel (my cat) walks with us. Poor thing....I think she's shell shocked. Her eyes are still the size of silver dollars and her tail is so poofy I'm afraid it's going to explode! |
OMG!! How scary!!!!!!! I woulda freaked right out!!! Holy crap! So where was your cat then when you noticed the bear??? Were you able to grab her too!!!!???????? Wow, your story gave me chills! |
Holy moley. That is a scary thing to have happen. I bet your kitty will refuse those lovely spring strolls for a while. |
 OH MY GOD! I'll take my Texas tarantulas (whole 'nother thread I posted today) over your big black bears any ol' day!! Wow!!! |
Holy Molyyyyyyy!!  That's so damn creepy!! Thank God for the "woof" hahaha Glad you guys got home fast and safely! That is definitely scary. Poor kitty, hopefully she recovers haha |

Omg how scary, I just saw on the news a little boy was killed by a bear camping with his family :( They are really scary! |
What a terrifying experience! I think I would have died right there! Glad everyone is okay! |

Seriously though, you are friggin lucky. Bears are fast and I'm surprised he didn't think Phoebi was a scooby snack. Holy smokes, I probably woulda froze and wet my pants. |
Great ... the rest of the night I'll keep hearing "RUN, Forrest! RUN!" :p Seriously, glad you and your babies are both safe. If the black bear is interested, he could have MY cat. JK -- he's just become a "man cat" and is rutting something awful. The spay appt. -- which was supposed to be next week -- has been postponed until next month. Oh joy of joys!!! |
I'm w/ you I would have kept running like Forrest Gump :yelrotflm :lol tears |
 Thank God you all were able to outrun that thing!!! Now .... :sidesplt: I want to thank you for the images that will be playing in my head for a long time to come!!! As I was reading, I pictured the cat passing you like a streak and the outline of her body on your front door as she didn't even slow down when she hit the porch!!! :D BEARS in New Jersey neighborhoods??? I wouldn't have followed "protocol" either ... you did the SMART thing .... Forest would be proud!! :lol tears |
That is scary to have a bear in your neighborhood. The good thing is that it was a black bear and not a grizzly bear. It is very rare for black bears to be aggressive towards humans. They're usually just out looking for food, and will often run away if they come close to people. But I agree, finding one in your own neighborhood is TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT LOL  When we go camping at Sequoia, the black bears come into the campsites sometimes looking for food. Over at the Lodgepole, they aren't as bad, but we stayed at a more rustic camp ground called Dorst a few years back. Now there were some active black bears! I was so afraid at first, but after a while, you discovered if you just called "Bear!" and made some noise with your pans, they'd run off. They are very pretty too. |

We've had a bear problem around here for close to 10 years now. In those 10 years the bears have learned not to fear humans....not such a good thing! There have also been many reports of small animals missing and last year 2 people in a neighboring town lost their small dogs....one yorkie and one poodle. And you're very right Misty......they're beautiful animals! His coat was so black and shiny. |
OMG  What a story! Thank God you guys are ok! See it pays to walk one at a time, can you image having to grab 2 and run  |
How scary, i would of lost it, we got them around here too ,allthough never seen one , people about 5 miles away claim there is one once in a while, too close to me as we live in the country......my eyes are allways darting around for Wildlife  |

HOLY MOSES! I would have been running so fast, my clothes would have burned off! Elbows and a$$holes...that's all you would have seen!!! I could NOT imagine being that close to a flipping BEAR!!!!  |
that is so crazy.....i would have ran like heck too!!! Benji would have wanted to go play with it or something. He is always like that to things bigger than he is. When I lived in NY, we used to go camping in the Adirondocks. One time a bear was behind my cousin and I and we ran into the bathroom and didn't come out for like a hour. We we only about 10 and scared as heck. |

That is too scary. I can just see you now running like the dickens to get away from that thing, boobs a floppin everywhere. LOL......sorry I know it isnt funny but the way you told the story had me laughing out loud. I had one run right out in front of me 2 days ago in Glenwood Springs. Lucky I was in my car or I would have crapped my pants too. The next day it was on the front page of the newspaper, they had to tranquilize it and relocate it. I dont know what I would have done if it was that close. Seems like the dogs would have smelled it and let you know it was coming or a neighbor would have yelled at you to give you a heads up. Good thing you were only a few feet from your house. Scary!! |
