Mucho gusto mis amigas latinas!:rose: I am Mexican-American, or maybe it should be American-Mexican? LOL. Things are a little watered down, as I am second generation born in the USA. My grandparents all came from beautiful Mexico. Growing up, we spoke English in our home. When I visited my 'ma' , (who also learned English right away-this generation came at the time many immigrants from many countries came over and they all wanted to assimilate) she would speak to me in Spanish, and I would answer her in English. This is the worst thing to do! I have spent the last 10 years studying/learning to speak Espanol properly. I went to the local community college. I did a Berlitz blitz. Then I went to Cuernavaca to attend an immersion school. Lucky for me the family I stayed with had 3 dogs. Two schnauzers (Cejas & Frida) and one yorkie named Pancho! NOw, it comes and it goes. Sometimes I can really crank it out, and other times I am lost. Never mind that my mom speaks it fluently. One thing is for sure, the more chances I have to practice, the better it gets. It gets even better after a Modelo chilada!!!!!!!!!!! I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world. Mexican food is the best and my favorite, and Mexico is also my favorite place to vacation. I love the Mexican hospitality. And Espanol is the prettiest language too! :awink: |
I am so glad that you embrace your heritage. I love to hear people talk about the effort they put into preserving our roots. And I totally know what you mean about the Modelo chilada. Although from time to time I like to enjoy a little shot of mezcal con gusano. I also love Mexican food. I came to Wisconsin because of my husband's job, but you'd be surprised how much people are willing to pay for some homemade flour tortillas and tamales. LOL. I love sharing though. Looking forward to hearing more stories. Quote:

Hello this is great to see so many latinas on here. I was born and raised here in NJ my mother is Ecuadorian (with a french grand parents) and father is Colombian. I grew up with my first language being spanish but as soon my sisters and I started school we got in trouble for speaking spanish and had to quickly learn how to speak english and english only. I am trying to get back to being as fluent as I used to be. I can speak and read spanish but have hard times with the spelling when I write in spanish:p . I am currently a Mortgage Consultant (CA, CT, FL, GA, NC, NY, NJ, MA, MD, OH, PA, SC and VA ) and Yorkie Rescuer. I love my heritage and always trying to teach it my boyfriend he is (white and chinese) So just imagine how confused our kids are going to be :D |
