Don't know why, but I was very happy. I am going to Home Depot today as I am doing the same thing, they will lay it as well. Just remember Nik, when you buy the boxes and all the other stuff you need, open all the boxes, they need to air out for 24 hours. It makes it easier to lay. Noy only that, when my entry was done and I opened the boxes, there were a lot of ends that were damaged.

Oh, can you shoot me an email and tell me how much it's gonna cost ya? My BR is only 182sq feet. :p My friend said he'll lay it down, but now I'm thinking about a warranty if Home Depot actually does it. Now I'm all confused.

Laminate is one piece of hardwood, Pergo is multiple pieces glued together to make one piece. (Pergo is a brandname.) They will run the same price wise, depending on what brand you go with. Pergo is a 'floating' floor (not glued or nailed) laminate is glued down.

If you are laying on top of a already wood floor, you'd want to lay Pergo for longer life.
If you are laying on top of concrete, you'd want laminate (glued down) for longer lasting life.

(Hubby used to own a flooring company.)

We have some sort of wood flooring throughout the first two floors of our house. (I mean, every room, every where). The bottom floor (basement) is painted concrete.

Anyway, I HATE our floor....it is like Pergo, but not Pergo. We bought is from a warehouse so it was cheaper....it wasn't the cheapest, but it wasn't the higher end...I guess it was an inbetween one. Anyway, it was super easy to install...lay down the padding and snap the pieces together. We have some spots that have wrapped....don't know how or why, but they did. Also, some spots on the room dividers (it is a floating floor and for some reason, we were told to put the breaks at each new room...hate that), anyway, some of those have been scuffed...I guess because they stand alittle taller. Also, it is so shiny! We have mop and then hand dry w/ a towel to keep from seeing the mop trackes (no matter what we use to mop it....cleaner from the company, store bought, etc). And if you walk across the floor or the big dogs are in, you see prints everywhere. Course, we have TONS of big windows and glass doors w/o curtains or shades, so that doesn't help.

There are some really great ones out there....definitely do your research and take in everyone's comments......

Pergo Looks Beautiful

We had put down the Pergo (Oak) but we always like going bare foot in the house and had to take it up because it caused our feet to get real red and mine evern blistered, wearing socks got holes in the bottoms of them, caused a problem for our yorkie Cassie's feet. I forget what they said it had in it to cause this. We decided to take ours up. We then went with the Congoleum planks in the family room, they are the oak color and it is great, love that. It is real easy to clean it is a vynal flooring. We had someone install it, it looks just as beautiful as the day when they put it in and that has been five years. People think it is real wood, and tell us that it looks like real wood.
Out of all the laminate flooring back then the Pergo was our choice as far as looks went. Enjoy your new flooring.

Well, that was a ugly trip to Home Depot. Not only did I get some nerd salesman that at first would not even let me ask a question, the price was MUCH higher than I expected.
This is what I found out about their 25 year "warranty". I have a small chip in my Pergo in my entry, it drives me nuts. I ask the man if it could be repaired when my floor is being layed. "Ah no", says he, you have to go through Pergo for that, and if it's not normal wear and tear they will not cover it. Normal wear and tear according to him is if the top of the Pergo discolors or comes off. Great! :( No doubt if I give these guys (that might lay my new floor) a few extra bucks they will fix it. It is the second board in, so it's not a huge job, it's an entry way for pete's sake. And yes, Home Depot did the original job 4 years ago.
So, on with the story. Check this out, I need 320 sq feet of Pergo including the extra 10%, they quoted me between $8 to $9 per sq feet to lay, including materials. That's almost $3000.00 with tax to get rid of my 4 year old Berber wee-wee smelling carpet if I go with the higher quote.
That's a lot of money. My parents offered to pay for it when I told them but geez, doesn't that seem a bit high? I will start to check around for more quotes, and other alternatives. I don't want to re-carpet, and I really don't want tile in our bedroom. I will look at vinyl, but I will probably still go the laminate route...........Tiki is 100% potty trained, but Surfie, bless his little heart just has not mastered the whole concept yet. He's maybe 80% there, but he will not hesitate to go if we go away for a few hours.........

$3000! I def. think I need my friend to install it. He told me that at Home Depot (he used to work there), they will just about take the materials you spend and multiply it by two if they are to install it!

That's just about right all materials considered.....I would rather fly my sister in from the UK and do it ourselves......... I would save some money. My hubby is not so handy, but us woman are!

Check for unlevel areas before installing

Just wanted to mention prior to installation of the Pergo or any flooring besides carpet if doing on cement if it is not level, it is neccessary to use a self leveling mix to take care of the problem. I had to do this prior to our installation and it was a mighty big job.
Take a look at the Congoleum planks and see what you think, they have them in the flooring stores, don't think Home DePot or Lowe's carry it.
I found this site on the congoleum planks which we ended up having installed. We have found it to be exceptionaly nice and plan to install it in our bedroom this summer. This was our alternative to using Pergo or going with another laminate. There is many colors to choose from.

I went with the Pergo

Today my two friends came over and installed the Pergo. Everything is done except the molding in the doorway and around the walls. But all the Pergo is down! First they had to put plywood to build to floor up to meet the hardwood, and that was a pain in the butt. The Pergo was easy to install!

Here's the finished product. :D And the pee stench is out of my room! Yippee!!!

That looks great, I would like to pull up the carpet in my den and put in a wood floor but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.

Ifyou don't mind what did it end up costing you? Waht do you mean when you say plywood to meet the hardwood. Thanks I'm thinking of doing this.

No prob. ;) My bedroom is 14x13 and it has two closets that are about 20sqft each. I bought 14 boxes of Pergo at Lowes(only needed 13, but am keeping one "just in case") at about $53.00 per box. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...066&lpage=none You also need to buy the door molding and the molding that goes around the edges of the wall. Plus an installation kit. That was all about $800.

Now, I have hardwood floors in my whole house except for the three bedrooms. When I ripped up the carpet, there was just plywood. When I put the sample Pergo down by the doorway it was a 1/4 inch shorter than my hallway floor. In order to do the Pergo, the floors need to be level. So we went to the store to buy the 1/4 inch thick plywood that needed to be screwed to the floor before putting down the Pergo. Now the floors are level. Plywood was about $200, so I spent a total of about $1000. Now, that doesn't include installation b/c my friends did it for me. But installation is between $800-$1000.

Here are some more pics of the process.

First pic, Dad helped me pull up the rug. See the plywood underneath? Miss Thing had to get in the way. Probably wondering what I was doing with all her pee pee! LOL
