Need some information please regarding Maltese I know there are some of you that have experience with both Yorkies & Maltese. Can you compare/contrast them for me please. I'd just like to know the pros/cons of each breed. Is one more hyper, yappy, laid back, loving than the other? How about grooming, obedience issues? Do they get along well together? Thanks for any information you can give me.:) |
Yes, I have had both. I had a Maltese I got from Glynette and she was very precious. Very sweet and laid back! They are harder to keep clean, since their fur is white. There are products you can use that help, such as stuff for the eyes to prevent staining and repel agents in conditioners to help with their coat. But overall - still hard to keep all white. If you are picky and would have to keep one all white if you had one - I would go with a yorkie. They are a lot easier - you do not notice the dirt as much. T. |
Some lines are prone to terrible eye stain, be sure to look at the sire and dam and their eyes before deciding to get one. Also ear issues can cause the tear staining. Sometimes antibiotics will help to clear up ear stains. Maltese are the most laid back of the two breeds. Yorkies in my experience tend to have more hyperness. But thats why I love the Yorkies. Maltese are very dear and sweet. Grooming as long as you are consistent and don't let them go too long with out good grooming is not that bad. There is wonderful products for white coats Juzme:aimeeyork |
There are four Maltese in our play dates we have attended for over a year and I find the Maltese not to be very outgoing. Would rather sit in their moms laps and just observe all the activities. They do have the eye stains and their moms have tried everything on the market without success. Their moms take them to groomers every two weeks and they find the white hair difficult to keep looking clean. I have two Yorkies. Azrael is a tom boy and loves playing with all dogs no matter the size. Zada loves everyone including all animals, but is the little princess. She is happy to see everyone but doesn't play hard. Mine are not the yappers unless they hear a knock on the door or the door bell. They quiet as soon as I open it. That is what I know of Maltese and of my Yorkies. Which ever one you decide on, just make sure you socialize, socialize, socialize. I can't stress that enough, and of course it's for all dogs. |
I had a maltese and a yorkie growing up, and they are both wonderful breeds. Also, about two months after my husband and I got married, we got a yorkie. He is the love of our lives :) Now that Miko is almost three years old, we just got a maltese a few days ago. We decided to go with a maltese for our 2nd doggie because I think the breeds compliment each other very well. They are very different, but both are sooo sweet. The only thing I would say, is that it's easier to keep a yorkie looking clean. Maltese do get tear stains sometimes, and you want to keep them white, so sometimes that takes more work, but I personally don't mind, as I have the time for it. They both require daily grooming. A yorkie can sometimes be more hyper than a maltese, but they're both sweet. My yorkie was fully potty trained within a month of having him, and my maltese is already potty trained as well. I don't know if my post is very helpful, but I do love both breeds :) |

I'll share my experience, as I have both. Tiki, my Maltese is my little Princess, I could not love her more. She was potty trained within a few months, with very few accidents. Although she has her yappy moments, (mainly when we come home) she is not a yapper, however, when she sees something invading our yard, she will bark and it is hard to get her get her to calm down without picking her up and telling her it's ok. She has a human like personality of a gorgeous little girl, she swishes her head back, as if to say look at me, I'm pretty, and if she disagrees with me she will sass me. Just like a kid. She cracks me up. She loves to be groomed, and will sit for hours just letting me brush her. I find her easy to maintain, she is bathed every 7 to 10 days, her hair/fur is very white up until the 7th day or so, and then she begins to look a bit ragged. I do walk her every day, her paws get black, but it goes away with brushing. When I give Surfie and Tiki treats Surfie will not come for his first treat, Tiki will take the first one, go give it to him, and come back for hers. Amazing! When she gets up in the morning, she will literally jump up in my lap and give me a huge hug around the neck, followed by a few kisses, Good Morning mommy! Yes, she loves to cuddle, but also likes her independence as well. She does not need to be in my lap all the time, as she loves to be with Surfie as well. I'm very fortunate as they love each other, and look out for one another. Tiki did have tear staining, it was minimal, but got worse during teething, it was really never too bad, I was lucky, I guess. When I started using Missing Link it went away, and she does not have noticeable staining at all. She is outgoing, loves people, other animals, and loves everything about life, and I would not trade her for the world. I'm sure you know enough about Yorkies to write a book. Our little Surfie is a doll, the mix between our two works beautifully for us. We wouldn't have it any other way. But, I would highly recommend a Maltese, they are amazing little fur balls......... |
:) Hi, I have a Maltese and they are very out going, very. I bathe my maltese every 10 days, he doesn't get dirty at all. Unless you have them outside alot , that would be the only reason they would get dirty. Maltese's are very loyal and extremely smart, however they don't like to be alone for to long. Eye staining has never been a problem for us, but they do stain mostly because of teething. I would advise if you are going to get a Maltese you go to a reputable breeder. My favorite breeder is Ta-Jon. http://www.tajonmaltese.com/puppies/puppies.html. I am interested in a Yorkie that is why I joined, I love them and I am doing alot of research.. Have a Great Day, Bianca:D |
I have had both, in my opinion, I prefer Yorkies. I like the Yorkie personality much more. Though I loved my Maltese, I found mine to be much more laid back and just not as spunky or alert as my Yorkies. It doesn't mean all Maltese are the same, I'm just relaying my experience. Also, the white coat is much harder to keep clean. |

2 Attachment(s) Just like anything else in life, all beings vary in personality, and looks. Just because I have a wonderful Maltese and Yorkie, others might not have the same experience. One just never knows what might be lurking in their little brains, or how they were treated before they became ours.......or we became theirs.. In any case, here are pictures of Tiki with staining, and without. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones, all I know is she did have staining, and once I supplemented her diet, she no longer had staining......Is this is possible with all Maltese, I have no clue, it's nice to have no staining, but I loved her just as much with it....Now she is just prettier, but she was always gorgeous in my eyes....... |
She's beautiful in both pictures :) |
I love my yorkie and will always want to have one! :smhuge2: But I have had Bentley, my maltese, for a month and I am sooo in LOVE with him! He is sooo super sweet and he plays with Chloe all the time! He isn't as hyper as her and I love that about him. I also love how she is hyper! LOL I would definitely recommend a maltese and a yorkie! Sorry, but I know this has to be a tough decision for you. |
Lola is more laid back than Zoey is. Zoey likes to wrestle and Lola rather observe. Lola is lazy like me, & Zoey is hyper like my ex (lol) Lola does have tear staining, but i keep the hair around her eyes cut short. :) |
Maltese have such sweet personalitites!! I've been drooling over this Pashes baby girl! Isn't she a cutie! http://pashesmaltese.com/puppies.html Stains are not an issue with us either. It really does have a lot to do with diet and environment. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's my mom's 2 with my Chloe. :) |
Thanks for all your replies You are telling me just what I need to know. Tiki is gorgeous, a doll. Can you tell me what size she is? Oh, I would love to have that Pashes baby. Is it more unusual to find the small Maltese than the small Yorkies? More expensive?? Little Bit is 4# and I love his size & would love to have a Maltese just the same size. ChloeandDJ I noticed that you didn't note any differences in the two. Are you just being diplomatic? My main issue, other than the $3000, is that Little Bit is extremely spoiled & gets very jealous and starts trying to get in my lap if I am holding one of my grandchildren. I really don't know if she would enjoy a playmate or just be jealous. |
Jodi that picture is worth a million bucks !!! JUST GORGEOUS !!! talk about CUTE dogs - The Maltese is just a living DOLL especially the puppies...OMG they look like little stuffed toys they're so darling |

I think maltese are more expensive. Especially if you want a smaller one. I certainly think you can find one for cheaper than 3000 but I just love that little one's look and I wanted to share.:) |

I used to like you, really I did, as a matter of fact quite a lot. First, you entice me with all your beautiful clothes, but now you're showing a picture of that gorgeous Maltese, dang woman ya want me to get a divorce so you can steal my hubby or what? Cause you know I now want that puppy big time, problem is my hubby will probably want it even more than me, and I will have to divorce him if we have three dogs. :p (He's been bugging me for another puppy, he wants a Biewer, I think we have enough dogs period, but he does love little Tiki, so that picture will melt him) I'm not even going to show him the picture of Chloe, and your mom's dogs, man, what a beautiful picture that is! Simply stunning........ |

She is expensive, that's for sure. Obviously, you can find a less expensive one, but she sure is cute! |
That Pashes baby girl is adorable! I think overall, a smaller Maltese is going to be more expensive. I don't think smaller Maltese are less common than smaller yorkies though. AKC states 4-6 pounds being preferred for a maltese. By the way, that picture of Chloe and your mom's 2 babies is absolutely gorgeous! |

She is not long at all, but her little belly is getting a bit round, he thought she was fine, but I am cutting down on her treats. I would prefer she lost a pound. I'm sorry, I can't answer your question regarding small Yorkies versus Maltese. I'm sure someone else can however... I'm sure Little Bit would get used to a friend, it would just take a bit of time. And you my friend, would love a little Maltese, I'm fairly certain....... |

Hmmm...Well actually...I am a sucker for a man that loves animals, it really says a lot about them...lucky for you I do have one of my own that loves the furballs as much as I do. :D I think that baby is just perfect. I really would love to have her.:rollingey |
