When you say the industry is down - what exactly does that mean - people aren't buying llamas ?? Why would someone raise a llama .... I really AM interested but since I'm totally clueless as to what a llama breeder does - in between debates maybe you could fill me in ??

Ok that is good.
It means people have over bred the llamas and they did not pay attention to quality and then they were overwhelmed and are selling them for next to nothing. Early on it was typical to sell a llama for between $40,000 & $100,000 each now it is more like $200 to $2,000 if your lucky. People are buying but its just not like it use to be.
Llamas are like Lays chips you can't just get one. We fell in love with them and well its all down hill from there.
We show and llamas are also pack and do obstacles. Come to the Houston Rodeo and you will see all they do.

My Daughter and I have sweaters made from llama wool. They are very warm. Mine has llamas on it

VERY COOL !! My company used to host the Houston L & R Show parties - we had an aircraft hanger and they'd have their yearly 'dance' & Dinner in it - - I met lots of the people behind the scenes of the big Rodeo - they are fun people that's for sure....I'll have to watch an obstacle show one day - sounds interesting - I didn't know people actually could train them

that's a shame about the prices for you - I had no idea they went for that kind of money wow

Yes they have fiber and it is very soft and nice to work with (Alpaca's have the same) Yes I shear all of my llamas and other people's too every year and sometimes several times a year depending on the animal

I think Llamas were a novelty at one time. They're not like yorkies that you can keep in your house, so the demand is limited.

Well if they were selling for those prices, then a $10,000 yorkie probably doesn't seem too absurd to you. Did you check out Jeff Danes site.
