MacBook VS. Dell 1 Attachment(s) Right now I have a Dell desktop computer but I really want an Apple laptop. Do any of you know anything about Apples? I've never had one before... Would you recommend them? |
Well, I can give you my $0.2 worth! I will warn you though, it is biased! :D I love Macs - wouldn't have anything else. In fact, I did buy a PC desktop a few years ago because my husband needed to learn to use the computer and he had PCs at work. I've only used Macs - I'm in education and that is all I have at work and that is what I bought for personal use too - until I got the PC. I absolutely hated the PC - hated it everyday I had it. BUT, I think that is because I don't understand how computers work and I think that you need a basic understanding of computers to run a PC. The Mac is different - it does everything on its own automatically! I love love love it. Now, granted I don't do programming or anything like that - which I understand a PC is much better for. I've had a Mac iBook (laptop) for 3 years - absolutely no problems - really love it - still use it for travel. It was my only home computer for a couple of years - I used it every evening at home. I just got a new iMac desktop - WOW! is it ever nice. The only issue I have had with the Mac laptop is that now after 3 years, it is running more slowly. I have a 3 year warranty which isn't up till March and I think I will take it in to see what is causing the slowdown. Anyway, that is my opinion. The only thing that I will say is that sometimes PC users don't like the Mac - why? I'm not sure. I think it is the most user friendly computer on the market. Let me tell you - if I can use it - ANYONE can. I do have a word of advice. I think you are getting ready to go to college - right? Does your college primarily use Macs or PCs? You can call and find out. Anyway, my university is a Mac user and so many of our students use Macs because of that. It is OK to use a PC - but it is something for you to think about. Also, I think Macs might cost a little more - not sure about that. Good luck on your decision - if you decide on the Mac, I don't think you will regret it! :p |

I have heard about PC users hating Macs too. I think it is because they run on different operating systems. Yes, I will be going to college in the fall but I'm not sure which one yet. I really want a laptop because I hate having to always be in the same place to use my desktop and would love to be able to take the laptop anywhere I go, especially now that I will be in college with twin boys! Do you have the 13in laptop or the 17in? |
i bought a dell laptop when i graduated college in 2004. a couple months ago i started dating this guy who worked for the apple company. after seeing all his apple "toys" i had to get one for myself. So now i am the proud owner of a macbook pro and i LOVE it. its different from my dell and i'm so used to running windows, but i'm learning all the ins and outs of the mac. i recommend one. Oh, and another favorite part of my mac, i don't have to resize pictures anymore to post on YT. i just pic a picture and upload it, without any problems. :) |
I have the 12 inch and I really love it - but I have back and shoulder problems and the 17" was too heavy for me to carry around. The 17" would be better to look at everyday - but one thing to think about is that, even with a 17" screen, web pages and word files do not fill the 17 inches - so even though the screen is bigger, what you are looking at is not necessarily bigger. Just something to think about - plus carrying the laptop around all day in your backpack is also a consideration. I think smaller is better - but that is just me. I think a laptop is an absolute MUST for any college student!!! My students use them in class to take notes and then they sit in the lounge and work on them between classes. And we have wireless internet (most colleges do) and so you can check in on YT too! :D Is there an apple store near you? We have one in the mall here in Austin. If I were you, I'd go to an Apple store (if possible) and just play with them. I think you will love it - but you should check it out! |

I have a Dell laptop and prefer it over Apples.. I volunteer at a school that uses Apples and I find it so much more difficult to do anything. It's a hassle to even copy/paste a link. Also, it seems more difficult to download programs for an Apple. |

Every class I am in with students on their laptops they are are checking out websites and on AIM.:p |

The trick is to get up and walk around the classroom - behind them. They quickly shut the windows they don't want me to see and go back to note taking! |

I had the Apple mac in my classroom also ... I got used to that but when I bouight a laptop (or a desktop for that matter) ... I went with the DELL ... I suppose itz a toss up ... Although Apple does cost more, I understand it does not get "hacked" that much b/c there are less of them and therefore not so much fun for the people who want to spoil everyone's fun .... Itz also a matter of $$$ - I understand the Apple is costly ... this may help you..... http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53657 |

with my mac i just used the mouse i had for my dell and i can still highlight, right click, and copy/paste links. same as before. Get a mouse with two buttons instead of the mac mouse with one button and its just the same |
OH BIG THING: If your interested in getting a mac and don't want to get one a little cheaper then try asking if they have an refreshed ones available. that is what mine is. People buy the computers from the stores, open up the box, and then decide they don't want them for whatever reason, and return them. so refreshed comps are ones that have been sold and opened before but not really used. They are returned to the stores, the store geeks check them out and make sure nothing is wrong with them, and then they are resold for cheaper. Mine is the mac book pro15 inch, 2.0 ghz intel core duo/512MB/128MB VRAM/80GB hard drive/5400RPM. Original price $1699.00 My price $1299.95 saved: $399.05 :) |

QUOTE] YES YES YES - presently, you DO NOT have to worry about viruses. I've had friends who have switched from PCs to Macs due to work or something else - but then changed back to the MAC because they couldn't tolerate the viruses. So far at least, that is one thing that you don't have to worry about. |

I know this post is really late but it depends on what you want. If your into design, website, photos, videos, home movies go with mac there better with graphics. If your going into programming pc's are better. If you just want a new a computer for general purposes mac's are easier to use thats why there usually the computers you find in school's. |
I can tell you with out a doubt.... Go Apple! I am 100% an Apple / Mac Gal! |
I have had both & I like pc better, I buy compaq/hp. Apple frustrated me, I know its better for virus protection but I found a really good all in one virus/firewall/spyware/pop up blocker & more thats all in one box & runs scheduled scans daily-I love it. Since apple is going to be more compatable w/windows/vista I think it might be ok. I just dont like Mac programs. I had a few icons on a mac desktop & could not get them off, I can usually figure anything out...on my windows desktop i right click hit delete & its gone. A guy I know was a Mac user, wouldnt own anything else, I told him to take a older computer I had set up on windows & he loved it, he said at first it was hard because it was different but after he looked around on there awhile he really liked it & said he was switching. I tried a apple & was so glad to get it out of my house. it made me feel so stupid & it just seemed so useless-I love my windows. Walmart has good deals on laptops & desktops. I have always bought compaq/hp but their customer service, I should say what customer service. I may be going DELL. Stay away from mail-in rebates, I should say what mail in rebate |

matter of preference and what you get used to at first! Quote:
As for your own preference, itz a matter of taste!!! What Apple does not make in profit from the mass sale to school districts, they make in sales to the general public .... With all the Windows programs out there, the PCs can all run the same ... I remember when Commodore 64 and PET were the computers of choice for schools, and I had to get my daughter one. |

I LOVE macs. I have an iBook G4, and I cannot wait until I can save money and get my hands on a MacBook. First of all, aesthetically, Mac beats any other computer out there (well, maybe some competition with Sony, but not much). Second, since you want a laptop, you would want one that has lots of battery power when unplugged. My computer is about 2 years old, and I can still use it unplugged for three hours straight. The batteries of other PCs go downhill fast! Third, I have found that macs tend to slow down less over time. With Windows, after you have owned the computer for a year or so, it takes a long time to open the computer and to open programs. With macs, even if your computer is 2 years old, the computer processes what you want to do very fast. I agree that you need some time to get used to a Mac if you've owned other computers all your life, but once you get used to your Mac, you will love it. I know I did. Oh, and if you have any problems with your mac, you just show up at a macstore, sign in, and a mac expert tries to fix your problem for free. My mac's dvd player wasn't working, I took it to a mac store, and an expert guy worked on it for 40 minutes. Didn't pay a dime. It works very well now. Sorry for the long message, but one more thing. If you are going to start college soon, most computer companies give education discounts. I know mac gives 10% off, I don't know about dell, but it's worth looking into. :) Good luck picking your next computer. |
