Sad news..... 12/11/06 BOSSIER CITY, La. - A pit bull puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes while the child's parents slept, police here said Monday. The parents were booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and were being held in the Bossier Parish Jail pending an initial court appearance. Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes. Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke up to the sound of the baby crying, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. "They did not see the dog injuring the child," police spokesman Mark Natale said. The girl underwent surgery Sunday at Sutton's Children's Hospital in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach the child's toes, Natale said Monday. ‘Essentially a puppy’ The puppy was 6 weeks old and had no record of receiving its shots and will be quarantined for 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that. "The puppy itself was just several weeks old! I mean this was essentially a puppy," Natale said. "This puppy might have been trying to nurse on the toes of this baby," veterinarian Michael Dale speculated. "I know that sounds a little far fetched, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind." Teresa Miller, who sold the puppy to the Hansches, was skeptical the dog did it. "He didn't chew on anything while he was with me. Out of all of them (in the litter), he was the least chewy." Another veterinarian, Dr. Valri Brown, said if the puppy chewed off the infant's toes, it would not have happened quickly. "It would have to be a period of time — maybe at least an hour," she said. Meanwhile, the puppy's been quarantined at Bossier City's animal control office for the next 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that. When she is released from the hospital, the child will be placed in a foster home until the case against her parents is settled, officials said. |
OH My God - how could they NOT hear that baby screaming ???? That's so awful and totally the parents fault ! |

Thats so sad  Those two little beings hurt because of the parents' neglect... |
How very, very sad!!!!!:( |
That is so horrible. For one, if you have a baby and you are just sleeping and you have a dog you should really but them in a crib not just stick them in a car seat. It sounds like these parents weren't doing a very good job. How could a dog chew up 4 toes without the parents knowing especially if they were right by each other! |
Very sad..Poor little baby. Did anyone noticed the pup was only 6 weeks and the breeder said it did not chew on things... |
They were sleeping on a mattress in the living room floor? And 1 month old baby in an infant seat beside them, and they didn't hear ANYTHING? What happend to beds, and cribs? And to have a pit bull with a baby that young? To me, if you can't afford a crib for your children, or a bed for you, certainly shouldn't be able to afford a dog like that. Yea, baby DOES need to stay in foster care. Something really stinks with that story period. And to think the child is ruined for life, at 1 month old. Some people don't need to have children or pets. |
This is very said and it sounds a little fishy to me.. i think there is more to the story.. Either the parents weren't there and they came home to it... Or they were not in the same room.. I'm sure the baby was screem in horror with a puppy chewing on her... This is so sad.. And some people should not have pets or babies.. |
How do you go to sleep and leave a one month old in an infant seat? Neglect all the way! They should be proscuted to the full extent of the law. If they did not hear her screaming until four toes were chewed off they must have been high on something! Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |
My neighbor's pit bull killed a miniature dachshund on Monday. They have always said, "Oh, Daisy is so sweet! You can let Hootie and Hobbs play with her! She would never hurt a fly!" Of course, I never DID let H&H play with her. I always make up some lame excuse why they can't play. And I'm glad I haven't let them "play" because Tuesday morning I am letting H&H out to potty and DAISY was out there with her owners and they were like, "Yeah, we had to buy someone a new dog yesterday. It kept taunting Daisy and she chewed through the chain link fence and killed it."   They were acting like it was the DACHSHUND's FAULT!   I am keeping H&H as far away from their dog as possible. And I know there are some really sweet pit bulls out there. But this one is obviously not one of them. |
why in the crap were they sleeping on a mattress on the floor and the baby sleeping in a carrier on the floor? If they can afford to buy a pitbull then cant they afford to buy this baby a crib??? This is just sick! |
Sounds to me like the parents were on something to sleep that hard. Something does not add up. The vet said it would probably take about an hour to chew the toes off. That baby had to be crying the whole time. Those people do not deserve to have children or dogs. Very sad and sick. |

My brother had THREE of these things in his backyard (BIG ones) and we ALL warned him about having 3 of these types of dogs in his backyard because he had a (then) 4 year old step daughter at home (she is older now)...he always just laughed at us and shrugged us off and said, "They are fine - they love kids, they are playful, and we raised them since they were puppies so they are harmless" blah blah blah...he ended up getting rid of all 3 of the because they bit his step daughter. Surprise, surprise. |
I agree. In this case the parents are definitely the ones to blame since they were not even keeping an eye on that poor baby. Leaving a baby unsupervised with a Pit Bull running around the house is just stupid. Some people have NO brains what-so-ever. They were just ASKING for it. That poor, poor baby...this made me CRINGE. It is just AWFUL :( |

This is horrible! I agree with the others that said the parents must have been high on something to sleep through that. When my kids were babies, all they had to do was whimper and I'd be awake checking on them. The only other logical explanation is that they were gone and left the baby and puppy home alone. Poor helpless baby that had to endure that! |
Please note that the Pit Bull was only a puppy - a few weeks old. It was irresponsible of the people to have not kept their eyes on either of those babies (the little girl or the little pup). I certainly can't blame the little puppy for doing this - he is so young - and definitely going through the "teething stage." And don't we all know how they will chew anything! - and how sharp those little baby teeth are - and how much they hurt. It breaks my heart for the little girl --- and I feel very sorry for the little puppy too. (What do you suppose might happen to him because of this???) ***** I just can't imagine leaving a "teething little puppy" around a small child. What happened is exactly what I would be afraid might happen. Carol Jean |
I bet it wasn't even the dog who did it..they probably got mad at the baby crying and did something themselves. Then tried to make it look like the dog had something to do with it. |
That poor baby! How could the parents NOT hear the baby cry? I'm sure the baby was crying. I'm glad she's going to foster care, she diserves better then the parents she was born too. I'm sure you guys are right about the parents being on something. What also comes to my mind is what about when this baby wakes up in the night crying because she's hungry, like all babys...do they sleep through that too? I wouldn't leave my baby a lone with any animal...no matter what the breed. All breeds go through teething, and this pitbull was obviously going through that too. This story really doesn't say that pitbulls are mean dogs, just that they teeth like any other dog. This could've been done by any breed of puppy. stupid parents + teething puppy= tradegy. |

I almost posted this story the other Day when i heard it on the news this just sickens me i am so sick of hearing about these neglected children all you hear any more is how a mom killed her kids or a dad abused an infant what the hell is wrong with people having kids should be a privilege not a right people like this have no right to have children and this poor pup will probably be put down for one he is a pit these dogs get the worst wrap and to be honest they can be the sweetest dogs in the world but when you get idiots like these 2 raising one there is no doubt that it will turn out bad. OMG i just can't imagine that this could happen and now this poor child will have to go through the system just to find a home that loves it or worse they will give the baby back to th idiots who let this happen. I think stupid a$$ people like this should be sterilized and not have the option to have kids |
This story makes me physically sick! It enters my mind constantly with the end result being that it is such a pity and total neglect the ENTIRE way around! As someone else mentioned....they should have bought a CRIB instead of a DOG. As someone ELSE mentioned.....THEY DIDN'T WAKE UP!!!!???? Numbers 1-10 (and more!) a newborn needs checked on CONSTANTLY! If the poor excuse for parents were THAT sound asleep, due to drugs or whatever, there was going to be no intention of feeding the newborn every 2 hours! TOTAL NEGLECT!! I am so angry over this:mad: . The baby would have been kicking and thrashing and SCREAMING!!!!! The most important issue is the baby. This baby's whole world just changed due to TOTAL NEGLECT! Those parents should be charged with a LOT more than a "misdemeanor"!!! I have to add that is THE queerest thing the breeder could have said! I don't mean to be sick, but that pup had to have held the baby's leg down to do all that damage. Hell, these people weren't even protecting their PUPPY! My heart goes out to that little baby, and I'd keep her in a heartbeat and watch over her and protect her and love her like EVERY child deserves. |

Just wanted to update everyone on this story the parents are now being charged it turns out it wasn't the puppy who did it!! It was a ferret that got out of it's cage and got to the baby:eek:  This story is so sad |
