Just how expensive was it for you the first 6 mo. to a year?? Just trying to get a guess on how much that first year is going to cost me to raise my little girl in today's world. Of course, w/o factoring in doctors visits. Just the neccessities. How much do you think? (I've been doing a lot of reading/analyzing and comparing...nothing will give me a 100% answer, I know. Just would like an idea.) |
If she's got good grandma's, not much :p Will you be breastfeeding? Formula is expensive. Diapers, expensive. Get the huggies packs at sam's club and they last quite a while. BUT the good thing is that you usually get so many diapers and onesies and clothes from your baby shower that you don't usually have to buy anything but formula the first year. Oh and some nice pics every few months is nice too. Do you know anyone that has just had a baby girl? Babies usually have so many nice clothes that they don't have a chance to ruin because they grow so quickly, most people are happy to give away boxes of nice clothes they can't use anymore...In my family we had 9 boys born one right after the other, the baby clothes were handed down so many times and they still look good! Also do you qualify for WIC? |
are you talking about a puppy or a human baby? |
Are you going to have any baby showers? |
Wish I had a little girl..... Quote:
LOL.....if you need a pseudo" grandma" let me know.....(although, I am entirely to YOUNG to be a Grandma!!}lol |

You can also save money here and there. I am grandma to a six year old and a three year old. I bought every diaper they wore and clothing the first two years of their lives. i bought nearly all that nasty baby food and what formula the WIC card didn't pay for. WIC is a program run thru your local health dept that helps people with children that have less than 332,000. income. It pays for formula and baby cereal when they are small. If your little one is on a special formula like one of mine was, it helps. it does not pay for those little jars of baby food or diapers. Now, about diapers, A lot of people don't realize it but a lot of store brands are actually the same as the name brands. Kroger brand diapers are the same as HUGGIES or Pampers. I can't remember now which one. And they are good. Also the walmart brand of diapers is just as good and half the price. Consignment stores have good baby and toddler clothing. Don't let pride get in the way of shopping there. if you have a baby share have whoever is giving the shower to drop hints to get the diapers and clothing in elevated sizes. They will outgrow thee newborn clothing and diapers in two weeks time. get a few newborn, then 0-3, then 3-6 sizes and you will be good to go. |
Let's begin: Yes, I'm talking about a two legged child, not a four legged child. ;) Yes, I will be having a baby shower-a girlfriend of mine has already started me a registry at Babies R Us on-line. And any pseudo grandma are welcome! She's going to have a lot of people around her that are going to love her and help us out as needed. I won't let pride get in the way as much as possible. I'm a realistic individual and know that the rode I chose to go (keeping her vs. adopting her out) may not have be the "easiest", but I think I need to try. Thanks for the tips!! Anything further, keep 'em coming-I'm all ears! ;) |
WIC (women, infants, children) is a wonderful program and I had it for my daughter until she was three!! You should also be able to start it asap because the dairy products are for you too, Mom! Does anyone know if they still give peanut butter and cereal? I think if you breast feed you can also get broccoli. When my daughter was a baby, blue cross-blue shield health ins was about $72 a month for her. It's increased now to almost a hundred at age 9. Still not bad and they have been easy to work with. Someone posted above that the store diapers are just as good and I'll vouch for that also.. as long as they say "ultra" lol! Always buy your baby and toddler clothes a little big and they will last you longer. Once they have on their pamper and an undershirt, if they are a little bigger it's usually ok anyway! And if you really want to save money in the long run...don't do your nursery in something that can't be easily changed. For example...when they get a little bigger they may want a different theme to go with a favorite character, ect. We used the vinyl decals rather than wall paper or borders that would have to be eventually changed. Thank goodness we did because she went from winnie poo to Barbie, and now to a room full of Daisy stuff! Just use a good color on the walls that can blend with different little girl stuff for a few years. And one more thing I can think of at the moment...put a vaporizer on your registry! I forgot that and found that I needed one off and on for several winters! And those "diaper genies" aren't really what they are cracked up to be. You are constantly having to buy replacement bags. We always just had a seperate plastic trash bag in a pail for diapers. |
I would definitely try to get on WIC. I couldn't of done it without that program!!! The first 6 mths (IMO) is usually the easiest. You have all the clothes/diapers and other necessities that all your well wishers bought you- so you're good. It's once they grow out of the gifts that you have to really start forkin over your money. |

to help with diapers... here is a hint for a baby shower. Have a diaper raffle..send out a note with the shower invites stating if they want a chance to win a small prize, maybe a $10 gift cert. or something like that, have them bring a pkg of a certain size diaper. Send out several different sizes in the invites and then you just draw a winner at the shower for those who bring diapers with them. That way you don't get stuck with 25 pkgs of newborns, but several pkgs in different sizes. And WIC does still supply formula, milk, cereal, peanut butter, eggs and cheese. That is a great program if you qualify for it, so check into that..save you alot of money down the road. Congrats on the baby!:D |
Start buying wipes and diapers when you go to the grocery store now, They will always be used and you can never have too many. Milk is expensive and that will depend on the kind you get and hopefully you won't need a special one like my friend did and it was only in pre-made cans for 10.00 a can! |
If you ever need anything.... Please do NOT forget all of us here......I would be honored to help out in anyway....... Please keep us informed of the progress. Shirley If there is someway to receive your mailing address......maybe the "gift fairy" can send surprises every now an then.......LOL |
It looks like even despite having the assistance of my parents, I should speak w/ them about me going on WIC. And that diaper raffle is a cute idea! ;) Saleswman-I'll send you a PM w/ my mailing address. You're so sweet. lol But don't feel obligated to send anything at all. Just your well wishes have been enough for me. Thanks a ton! Still trying to come up w/ a name for this little girl. So far it's: Taylor Anne Any suggestions? ;) (we're trying to keep the middle name Anne/pronounced Ann) |
