Does anyone RV full time? We've been thinking about buying an RV but not sure we're ready for the full time lifestyle yet. Does anyone on YT RV full time or even part of the year? Any info would be helpful. |
Not full time but any chance we get. I am retired but my husband is not but we do enjoy traveling in our fifth wheel. Good luck to you.:) |
Thanks. We're retired and would like to start traveling a little more but I'm really tired of hotels. |
that would be so nice you could take your little yorkies with you too! |
If I could I would..I say go for it!! Thats livin'!! Dawn |
i would luv to. my fiance' and i talk about it all the time. i would enjoy seeing our beautiful country with my yorkie. definitely in the future 4 us. |
We have a motorhome that we bought a few years ago. We used it rather infrequently since we were both employed. It was nice when we traveled though...no wondering who slept in the bed before us, etc. We ended up living in it for a year while our house was being built in FL. We stayed in a very nice campground and things worked out really well. We had no real problems living in it space wize, etc. Even though it was perfectly fine in there for a year, I found I am the kind of person that needs a place to call "home". I need space, nik naks, pictures on the walls, etc. I've met people who are full timers and love it. I just found that I couldn't do it myself. I think what you should do is travel some and spend time in an rv before you decide to give everything up. See how you feel after a while not having a place to go back to. I have also heard a couple of stories where people sold everything they had, bought a motorhome and then decided they weren't happy. So, you should give it lots of thought and a test drive before making a final decision. Hope this helps. |
We are full timers, it has it's pros and cons. For the most part it is OK and it takes away all the responsibilties of home ownership. That is a plus in my book. You meet the nicest people . That is how I met gypsyqueen on here. I CRIED LIKE A BABY WHEN SHE LEFT HERE. The down side is I miss all my belongings. We don't travel around like a regular fulltimer my DH hasn't retired yet. We are moving to a new place on Sunday It will cut out 2 1/2 hours a day driving for him. One word of advice , buy big the first time! Ours is a 2006 Openroad (36ft,5th wheel)with three sides. I would like a 38 with 5 slides. Good luck.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/000_0161.jpg |
Thank you for the replies. We're new at this so any information will be helpful! We're looking at the 2007 Alfa See-Ya or See-Ya Gold models, at least 40 feet, super slide plus 3 other slides, diesel pusher. We would pull my car behind that and probably have scooters or a golf cart too. The boyz would have plenty of room to run and it's a beauttiful RV. We would go full time for a while and travel a bit. Not sure if we would keep the cabin here or buy a home by our son and daughter where we could stay when we wanted too. Do you have any good websites for RVer's? |
That looks like a nice RV. I think being stationed in a park is different...you don't have to batton down the hatches everytime you want to go somewhere! I absolutely love to travel and I think I would enjoy it but we would eventually have a land based home too. Quote:

Here is a forum , these people can awnser many questions you may have. Alpha's are the top of the line and very well made. http://www.rv.net/forum/Index.cfm/fu...g/16315046.cfm |

If my memory serves me correctly, Higgin's Mom is one of the original members here and she and her husband RV full time. |
Thanks Kristy...maybe I'll send her a PM. Quote:

Sounds like a good plan to me. If you are not attached to the home you now have and are willing to relocate if you get tired of it, I too think you should go for it. The only problems I have heard of is from people who financially have to sell their home to purchase the rv and then when they decide they want to settle down, cannot afford to purchase the home they want. I wouldn't want to give up my home because I do want to have a place to come home and I was born in this town, raised my children here, have grandchildren here & all my friends are here. Also I am the type that always wants an escape clause. But I do love traveling and would like to take some extended trips. We did have to live in ours for about a month after Hurricane Rita and I have to agree with whoever said to go big the first time. My husband and I, my dd and sil and 2 grandchildren, a cat and a dog are just too much for our fifth wheel. If we were to make very many long trips I would have to upsize. I would love to hear your experiences when you start doing this. Good luck:) |
Thanks. We spent all day yesterday at a dealership and the owner is coming here tomorrow to go over some more info with us. We're in the research and learning stage so I'm not sure when our actual 'departure' time will be. I love our house here but there are no emotional attachments...it's just a great place to live! We know a long time RV service technician and we plan to talk with him to see what coaches he would recommend or what he would personally drive. I figured he would be a great resource since he works on them everyday. I'd leave today if everything was in place...I love to travel and it's getting cold here so the Keys are calling! |
Ours is the opposite- we need somewhere to go in the summer!:) |
Oooohhh...summer...that sounds good! |
full time rving Yes we do need somewhere to go in the summer, And thats just what my hubby and me and our two furbabies are gonna do. We moved to texas from california 3 months ago, sold our home there and bought a 38 ft motorhome and traveled for 8 months and had a great time, met so many nice people and saw so many beautiful places. Then we decided Texas was for us. So we bought a new home in Magnolia and will spend every summer traveling the U.S. with our furbabies. Gotta go to the cooler parts for the summer. Good Luck and ENJOY !!!! IT can be fabulous!!!!!! |
Another thing I forgot to mention. Carefull about the size you are getting. Most parks throughout the U.S. cannot accomodate a 40 foot motorhome. Its limits where you can stay, We have had to park in some rather tiny spots in parks and made it very difficult to manuver around. Just a heads up is all!!!!! |
Yes, we've wondered about the length. The 40 footers are nice but I don't want to have a hard time finding a place to park. I think there are limits on the length to go into the Keys. I guess I need to buy some books to read too... |

We are practicing retirement........he he he Good Luck..........I hope I have helped you out some........... |
Thanks...any little bit helps! We're retired...for 7 years now...but we're still (fairly) young, 44 and 57. I want to see the parts of the U.S. that I haven't seen yet. We traveled when I was a kid and camped in a tent all over the country and I loved it but since my back isn't getting any younger I think a real bed in a motor home might suit me better! |
We are not fulltimers - but we travel most of the summer - to get out of the Texas heat. My husband had to retire due to health issues - but I still work. I'm a teacher though, and get off for the summer, and Christmas, and spring break....... :D We have a 30 foot 5th wheel and it is fine for the two-three summer months - but I would want something bigger for fulltiming. Unfortunately, we probably will never be able to be fulltimers - my husband's health will preclude that by the time I am able to retire. That's OK though, because we are trying to make the most of the time he has left. We just love loading our 2 boyz up in the pickup and heading out for an adventure. You won't regret it - I am sure!!! I do enjoy coming home, but it is always so much fun to head out! We travel with 2 metal X-pens that we can set up together so that the boyz have a place they can run off leash and play. I think they do get tired of being on the leash all the time. They are still young 1 1/2 years and 9 months old - and they have free roam of our backyard - so I think they do miss being free of the leash when we travel. I love my job and I'm not ready by any stretch to retire, but I do envy those who are retired and can take off any time for as long as they want! Enjoy! |
I'm sorry to hear your husband isn't well but it's great that you have something like this to share...that's where the memories are, good ol' fashioned family fun! We have been considering several options and I think for now we'll keep our cabin and buy a motorhome to go in when we want. My husband wants a home base so that's what we'll do...and, I don't mind...I really like our cabin! I do want to go where it's warm for the winter though and I'd love to travel the Western states and the East coast...oh, and the Northern Woods and Montana, I love Montana! Oooh, and the Grand Canyon, Lake of the Ozarks, Tennessee...(I think I was supposed to be born in Tennessee but no one told my parents!)...can you tell I just love to travel? Quote:

My husband would love to do this someday. So, we will see. |
we just bought a "dog house" last year. we are fairly new to rv-ing. so far so good. My husband would love to live in it. he says one day we will do just that. but ... we will have a bigger one before I am willing to. I like space. we bought a used one. ours doesn't have any slide outs and that is what we need. I will say the times we have had it out, we have met some really nice people. Oh and have any of you seen the movie RV with Robin Williams? so so funny! |

I'm sure that, even if we were able to fulltime - that we would want a home base, so I think you are very wise to keep the cabin - now if only I HAD A CABIN!!! That sounds wonderful! I wish we lived outside of the city in a cabin - but the commute would be too horrible!!! It is so much fun to hear you get ready to start RVing!!! :) I just know that you will love it! Keep us posted - oh - and most RV parks have wireless internet (some free, some with small fee) so that you can stay connected to Yorkie Talk! Just get a laptop with wireless capability and you are good to go! |
Thanks! I wondered how the internet would work. Geez...I have so much to learn...this may take a while! |
