I Have A Question?? OK i went and got a tooth pulled yesterday because my son hit my in the jaw with his head and it broke it well i have a really bad fear of the dentist because of bad experiences. So anyway i went in and it took him an hour just to get the tooth out he was pulling so hard he was moving my other teeth forward it was killing me then he was using this tool to pull it out and he was pulling and all the sudden SNAP went my tooth he looked at the nurse and she quickly went to the hall and they were kinda whispering and mouthing something she was gone for a few min then she came back and handed some stuff to him. I asked him is it out? And he told me the top is i just got to get the roots so i didn't think anything of it well then he started digging again and i could feel stuff being chipped away later i found out he removed some of my jaw bone. After it was all over he gave me a prescription for percocet and i went home. Well about and hour and a half later i was able to get my meds but by that time i was dying in pain also he said the bleeding would stop within an hour and it should be pretty much done in 20 min well i was bleeding so bad i had to change the gauze every 20 min and when i took it out it was gushing so i called and they told me it was normal i didn't stop bleeding for over 3 hours and then it died down a little well i just thought that i would be better in the morning but i will tell you all i am in so much pain i don't know what to do i can't even open my mouth because it hurts so bad i tried to eat a yogurt and i can barley get a spoon in my mouth. My gums are swollen almost up to my front two teeth and my cheek is really swollen and sore to i literally can barely open it up. So i was wondering does this sound normal to all of you? Do you have any suggestions? |
Well I am very sorry that you ahd yet another scary experience at the dentist. As for the bleeding it might be normal because of all the handling and procedures done at once. What does soon like an anomaly is that part of your jaw boke was taken. That kind of scary. The eating part I know it can take days or weeks before you are able to eat correctly. Both my sister had their wisdom teeth pulled and they could only drink through a straw the first few day and then they were only able to eat soups and soft food. I know to one of them that their cheek got sewn to their gum and she was happy about that. She was also about to get a double dose of medication she didn't need but she stopped them as she is in the medical field and knew what was to be done. Anyways I wish you a speedy recovery. |
No advise for you, but I can certainly symphathize with you; I have a fear of dentist too. Seems he should have told you what he was doing though. Hope you feel better soon. |
Thanks guys i have had a tooth pulled before and never experianced anything like this i can't believe how bad it hurts right now so i guess it's soup through a straw lol |
sorry i thought i posted this in off topic i guess the drugs are getting to me lol |
I would go to another dentist if you aren't feeling any better soon...that can't be good with your jaw bone...There is a YT that will get on later her husband is a dentist I will make sure she ask him and post for you later....:) |

If she doesn't get on soon I will call her and get her to find out for you....at least her hubby can tell you what you need to do....:) |
Poor You i can sympathise with you, i have had 4 teeth out but none of them sound like yours! my dads tooth snapped when his was pulled he had to be put to sleep to have the root cut out, they didnt do it with him awake, and deffinatley didnt remove any bone! just a word of caution if you are still bleeding watch out my sister had a hemarege (sp?) when she had a tooth out. i really hope you can get this sorted and will feel beter soon  |
It's funny I'm reading this post. I have had a tooth ache for sometime now and have been dreading on going to the dentist. I just moved to the Illinois area and have no idea who would be good to see. I trusted my dentist in Michigan. If anyone know of a good dentist in the Rockford, IL area, please let me know. :D |
He should never have let you leave his office without telling you exactly what he did and what you should expect. I had a similar experience when I was young with an older dentist who was a known alcholic. Very bad experience. I don't know if the root can attach to the bone, but I have had enough teeth pulled to know that what happened to you was not right. I would go to another dentist. Wisdom teeth can be real problems, but the rest of the teeth shouldn't be. My last dentist had to pull a molar that had broken off and none of it was sticking above my gumline. I shut my eyes, grabbed the chair arms and squeezed with all my might, and he started laughing at me saying I could let go, it was out. I never even felt him tug. You definetly shouldn't be in this much pain. If it doesn't get better real soon, you should see someone else, just in case he damaged your jaw and didn't want to tell you. He may have knocked other teeth loose, too. Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon. |
That dose not sound good at all! I had a few teeth pulled when I was little and the next day non of that happen...I would go back or to a diffrent DR ASAP!! That dose not sond right, I dont think the root can go to your bone but I can be wrong. Poor thing hope you feel better soon! |
Thank you all so much i don't think what he did was right either i mean i had another tooth pulled a year or so ago and it was oral surgery but they couldn't put me out cause i was pregnant and he had to tug on it a bit he even cut a stitched up my gum and it never hurt like this i only bled for maybe 15 min and had hardly any pain and was fine the next day but this time it is bad i hope he didn't brake my jaw or something because my muscles are so tight i can barely open my mouth as far as knocking my other teeth loose i don't think they are but i will tell you they all hurt up to my front 2. The thing that makes me the most angry is i had a panic attack when he came in to meet me i started crying and i told him how hard of a time i have coming to the dentist you think he would've been more gentle also he cut my lip because he kept getting it caught between the tools I'm so angry i could scream!! You guys are wonderful thanks so much for the support also for the YT member with the dentist as a husband i would love any advice. |
Holy crap - think he was a highway construction worker in a former life ? Sounds like he took a jackhammer to your poor face He sounds so rough and if I were you I'd tell him you aren't very happy with how you were handled and get something stronger than percocet....OUCH ! That made me cringe reading your post |

What you're describing is not normal. Even though the dentist removed a piece of bone, it kind of sounds like you have a dry socket. I'd go back to the dentist and have him check it. |
what are the symptoms a dry socket? i though i was careful and didn't use a straw hmm.. that has me worried to now |
You poor baby...I too have a deathly fear of dentists...I have two broken back teeth and they hurt but i would rather deal with the pain than go to the dentist!! I had to have a root canal a few years back and took two xanax plus they put me on the laughing gas but I was still a nervous wreck by the time it was over. I layed there stiff as a board for over two hours and the next day I felt like I had been in a boxing match because my whole body was sore. I think you need to see a new dentist and possibly I think that dentist messed something up because like you said them going out in the hall and whispering and not telling you what is going on....seems fishy to me. Remember you are a paying customer and it is your body they are dealing with and were you 100% satisfied with their work on your mouth? You are entitled to know what is wrong esp. if it was something negligent on their part. I hope you feel better....I bet you can't suck through a straw because of the pain so I would see if you can make like a slushy milkshake out of your favorite icecream and eat it with a baby spoon.:) |
Okay, I am a dental hygienist and I will try to give you all the advise I can. Please don't drink from a straw...that WILL give you dry socket. Your wound is trying to clot, if you suck on a straw, the clot could come out. Food and junk will get in the area and that is when it becomes a very painful dry socket. Sometimes small parts of the bone comes with the tooth...not all the time. My uncle and brother in law are dentist and I have seen this happen, especially with molar teeth. I hope this helps...not all extractions go smoothly...I hope you feel better and make sure you stay on your pain meds. Jessica |

Well, get some rest!!! Hope you start to feel better soon:D |
You need to chenge dentist NOW!!! NO dentist should do that and they should have had you come in so they could check it again. It would bleed for more than 2 minutes but it should not be gushing and definitely houldnt be killing you so bad with pain. He did something VERY wrong. I am actually a dental assistant by prefession (long story) and NEVER have I seen a dentist act in such a matter. Are you feeling any better? Is the pain dying down. If not you need to either call them back OR go to another dentist but switch out cold and warm comressses on your mouth every 30 minutes or so ...Im sorry your experiences have been so aewful. Dentists like that give all dentists a bad rep. Ppl wonder why everybody hates the dentist!!   I would do some serious yelling. |
OK all i have been at my mom's all day she has been helping me with my baby as i am in pain. Well the pain has not gone away and i slept pretty much all day long when i woke up and realized it was hurting a little worse i again called the dentist but they were already closed so i asked for the on call dentist to call me back. He did call me and i explained the situation to him and told him i could barely open my mouth and he had the nerve to tell me this"Why are you having me call you why didn't you call during business hours? There is no way he could have damaged or even broken your jaw and if the pain pills aren't working then you should stop taking them and take ibuprofen you will have to wait till tomorrow to talk with the dentist you seen also you probably have a dry socketHe was so ignorant to me all i wanted was to see if they could get me a diff pain med and just ask if i should be in this much pain and i also asked him well would a dry socket cause me to have pain opening my mouth and he told me no so i don't get it. Also i have noticed that i am having a lot of pain where he gave me the shots and on the inside of my cheek i have a huge blue line where he gave me one of the shots. Both sides of my jaw are hurting now i can't lay down because there is so much pressure on my jaw even if i lay on my back. So i am going to call another dentist tomorrow not really sure what they can do for me. I am so upset i don't know what to do. Well i appreciate all the support from you all you have been wonderful thank you. |
This just doesn't sound like it could possibly be "normal". I think you MUST seek other dental care. If the pain gets too bad tonight, you may need to go to the ER! |
Well i just took another pill and as soon as it kicks in i'm going to bed i will call around tomarrow for another dentist. Has anyone ever had a dry socket before if so could you tell me what it feels like? Right now the hole where the tooth was is just throbbing really bad. |
OMG! I would see if you could get in with a different dentist/oral surgeon. Sorry, but this does not sound normal to me. Remove part of your jaw bone? GEEEEEZ!!!!! |
:2omg: Please, please, PLEASE seek out another Dentist! I'm in pain just reading this... To the point of almost being in tears! Your case is one of many reasons why if I had to choose between a Dentist and a Gynecologist (sp?)... I choose the Gynecologist (sp?) - HANDS DOWN!!! This guy sadistic for sure! |
Reasons like this make me scared to go to the dentist. You don't know if you are going to get a good or not so good dentist and thats what scares the heck out of me. I hope you feel better and I sure hope everything he did was normal. I have heard that a dry socket is the worst pain it's like going into hard labor, but a hard labor that does not stop for days OUCH!!! |
Any luck finding a new dentist? I feel bad that you are in such pain. If he took xrays 1st, he would have known if there was going to be a problem. Then he should have discussed it with you first. Having a tooth pulled shouldn't be so traumatic or painful. I'm sorry. I hope there is no damage and you start feeling better soon.:( |
