We had 5 cars for my wife and myself up until about 2 weeks ago when we sold our station wagon. We have an SUV (05 BMW X5), 4 door (02 Audi A4 Quattro), hatch (01 VW GTI), sports coupe (05 Mazda RX-8), and (had) a station wagon (92 Chevy Caprice Wagon). We've gone through about 14 cars (give or take) over the past 3 years.......my friends all say I have a problem  Maybe I do :D |
I think it all depends what State you live in and if you have property to park it on... or live someplace it has to be parked on the street. Where I live now you can park a car in your property and not have it tagged. I did this for 6 months with my Saab. Once I decided to start using it again when gas prices soared..... I just got the insurance reinstated. YES the battery was dead because I hadn't used it in forever but no bigger. I went to K mart and got a $25 new battery to start fresh instead of jumping it. My hubby is always whining why don't I sell the darn thing but I tell him it wouldn't bring much money and having the spare car was way more valuable then getting like $1000 or LESS if we sold it. Now that gas has SOARED I'm glad I saved the old thing.......LOL ,It gets 25 miles a gallon and my SUV gets 12 miles to the gallon. By the way..... If you have no place to park it.... maybe a friend has someplace you can. We park ours behind our shed ...LOL... not in the front yard.... and don't forget if you keep it to start it once in awhile and never let the dang grass grow underneath it or it will rust out underneath |
I think if you can manage with only one....go for it. Plus, if you live in a town and are pretty close to everything, running back and forth with just car probably wouldn't be a big deal. I, on the other hand, couldn't! I do stay at home, but I homeschool and am very active in several different groups. So, I couldn't NOT have a car. Plus, we live so far out, it is just better to have the extra. My husband does have a company truck and they pay his gas, plus, he drives about an hour to get to work and home each day! We do have several extra cars that just sit around, but he gets the very basic (cheapest) insurance for those. Some he doesn't even tag or insure, because he buys and sells so much. He bought two cars for $25 each a while back --- YES, $25 each! The guy had to get them moved and that was the price the salvage yard was going to pay for them. These were nice cars (one was a 99 Grand Am and the other was a 98 Buick something or other). He just had to put a $20 part in one and do nothing to the other and turned around and sold them for $2500 each! WOW! Isn't that crazy?! |
My husband and I have had only one car for five years now. I have to admit, it is getting harder and harder. It takes a lot of compromising and working schedules around to make it work! We're thinking about buying a second car very soon (when we have enough money). |
I just wanted to say good luck w/ your decision. I take public trans almost everywhere, so I was thinking about selling my car and having zero car! It would be very nice to not have car insurance or car payments. |
Cars cost A LOT to have! I don't blame you for thinking about doing this. We're going to be dropping down to one car as well, but that's because we're moving. I remember back when my husband and I moved here to SD and didn't have a car. My job paid for a FREE $50 trolley/bus pass every month. So we picked an appartment that was close to the trolley and luckily the place I worked was a block away from it as well. So it was an easy ride on the trolley to work everyday and we managed. I loved not having a car payment/ins/registration/gas/repairs. But my husband finally got here to SD and it wasn't as easy for him. I also got pregnant so we had to get a car. Anyways, good luck with whatever you choose to do. Don't forget to call the insurance company and tell them that you don't drive the car, it makes a big difference. Registration is also cheaper on cars that aren't driven. |
If you don't use it can you declare it off the road? In our county you get a sworn certificate, which declares the veichle off the road, then you dont pay any insurance, tax or anything. If not,you could sell it and get a scooter, that way you would have your own mode of transport plus its so cheap, and if you want to go out with your partner take his car :) |
I would go nuts without my car. |
We can one pick up truck my husband and I have a chevy camaro 2000 model we will soon be getting another soon for are son. We have to have two cars my husband works 12 hours days, I take our son and all my yorkies where they need to go.Good luck |
Well we have always had two cars but recently we had a guy stop and ask if he could by my car because my husband started a job as a truckdriver and my car just sat there because i had another baby and couldn't fit everyone in my car well with my hubby gone a lot we really only need one so we sold it and have one car now |
i dont think i could survive with only one car, i like having options on what I feel like driving that day ! |
