We live in a very rural area, alot of Amish. We snowmobile and have 52 miles of trails. Someone shot a coyote on the trail and put it up on a bridge post we go over. It was frozen solid and scary I hate to see it now.

We shoot them because we have to protect our livestock. No, it's not fun, but that's just how it goes here.

Wow, after reading all these posts, I am glad I live where I live. Even in the country we don't see coyotes, fox, or any big birds of prey. We will see rabbits and small birds with an exception of an owl once in a great while, you just don't see them here very often. The most we would have to worry about is stray dogs. I guess we are lucky that we don't have any wildlife here that could hurt our furbabies.

Most of my family has farms or dairies, much farther out in the country than we are, and they have to do the same thing. Once coyotes know you have their meal there, they will be back time and time again.

This is why I am scared. I'm quite sure the coyotes will be back.

One thing we do, and it may sound silly, but we leave a radio on at all times at the barn. So far, knock on wood, it seems to be working!

I just wanted to let you know I wasn't judging anyone about shooting the coyotes. Of course you have to do what is necessary to protect the livestock. Once they know where they can get a free and easy meal, they come back. I would just hope it would be the last resort. Thankfully the radio is working some. But I understand that once they realize the radio won't hurt them, you'll have to do what is necessary. :)

Unfortunately, we see them quite frequesntly here. There are so many new subdivisions going up in our area that they are running out of places to go...I think the creek at the entrance to our neighborhood is their favorite place to drink--I see them crossing the road there alot. There is a pack of them that lives on the the mountain near the at the edge of our neighborhood. (As in, the Mt. behind the houses right across the st. from us.) We hear them at night alot. They 'travel'--will hear them a few nights, then not hear them again for a month or so.

You have a chain link fence? If I were you, I'd put up an electric wire about 6 inches from the top of your fence. Relatively cheap to do and hopefully, it'll keep them out. They will be able to sense/smell it and that should deter them.

You really have to be careful now. You were worried about the hawks last
week now coyotes. Don't let your babies out for one minute alone. I saw
one where I live several months ago. I worry when I walk Bud at night but was told they will not approach him as long as I am there. You poor thing
after the last scare you must be going crazy with worry.

jodi , just be extra careful ,,, i dont trust any wild animals... how can you?
i would be nutso, especially from what happened the other day to chloe.
just have eyes in back of your head from now on....

You have reason to worry about them, too. I have a neighbor who ran out the front door, instead of into their fenced back yard, with a sick yorkie one night when it was pretty cold. She sat him down and then ran back into the house real quick for a sweater and came back and he was gone! The coyotes are not afraid of people as they once were. We were mowing late one night and I was on the riding mower in the back yard with the lights on and I saw a coyote. I decided to run him off and took off after him on the riding mower :D (yes, I know) and he didn't run until I was right up to him! So, do be careful. My yorkie is never outside the fenced yard unless she is on a leash anyway. Too many cars fly by here, not to mention the animals. And I don't even let her out in the fenced yard at night. At night or in bad weather, she goes on pads in the garage. I'm very protective of her and I was of Muffin, too. Yorkies are different than a lot of little dogs. They don't back down, either. They will charge anything!:eek:

Someone told me that they had lost two small dogs to owls one night. So...:confused:

Read this. I think it will change your mind. I'm nervous walking with Kacee in the very early morning hours or very late evening hours and I try to keep my head on a swivel. I can see all around where we walk. That's a good thing.
