Dog Dies At Groomer's

Sorry if I am duplicating, I think I put this post in the wrong category earlier

Did anyone hear about the poor little s**tz Zu that died at the groomer's . I caught the tail end of it on the news. This happened in Bklyn, NY, apparently they use a heater crate in which they placed the dog and left it unattended there. The heat must have been intense for the poor dog and they found it dead. What a horrible thing to happen. The news reporter was saying that you should make sure and ask that they don't use this crate to dry , they should blow dry the dog. Another thing to worry about at the groomers, so please ask them what they use to dry the dogs the next time you take your dogs to be groomed..Poor little dog he or she weighed 10 pds....

how horrible! i am a nervous mother and have seperation anxiety from my baby, I couldn't leave her at the groomer's for 4 hours not knowing if she was ok. So... I use a mobile groomer, they come to my house and do a great job! Plus, I can be there for the whole thing, and that makes me feel ten times better. That poor little dog and it's owners... it must be devistating.

I heard the news today and it is so sad. I just don't understand how something like that can happen. I feel so bad for the poor dog and their owner. The pup was a cutie.
I have never taken Gucci to a grommer and after something like this I will do a lot of research before I take her to one.

YORKIE7 06-09-2006 03:31 PM

Oh My gosh, that is awful that poor baby and the family.I hope they will be compensated, although Im sure no amount of money will heal the pain they must be going through :(

A couple of years ago the groomer I have used for 16 years had a young girl helping her and when I went to pick up my Pom the girl brings her out and she is breathing real funny and my pom has a massive coat and it was February. I said whatswrong with her the girl just stood there looking at me so the owner came out and I said something is wrong with her so I called my vet and they waited for me to get there and she had heatstroke. Her temp was way high and they had to put he on an ice blanket and oxygen. The groomer paid the bill and was very apologetic and the girl was never there again. That's why I hadn't taken Cali there until a couple of weeks ago and she did her in 1 hour. I am always afraid when Cali is out of my hands

MyTrixie143 06-09-2006 08:26 PM

That is absolutely horrible!!! To think that you were coming to pick up your dog expecting him to be looking adorable to find him dead instead!!!  I would be suing them for every penny they had!!
I take my dogs to get groomed where I use to work. I know that the use cage dryers but it is all cool air. The only have one heated cage dryer for older dogs that have arthiritis. The temperatures are watched and monitored very closely so there is no chance of them getting overheated. If the temperature is above the what it is allowed to be all dogs have to be removed from the room immediately until they can cool down the room. It is one of the things they are really strict on, so I know my babies are all safe!! Oh and no dog is to be left unattended in the cages, there must always be someone back there watching them at all times!!!

That is really sad. I don't really trust anyone and I don't like the thought of my dogs being in a crate for hours at a place they don't know. For that reason, I'm my own groomer. I did a horrible job (my poor golden retriever) the first time around and I got better as 10 months went by. My golden and yorkie never has to go to the groomer's.

 that's awful.... a yorkie died at petsmart grooming in deptford , nj too. he was strangled when he was left unattended during a haircut. this stuff is inexcusable.

myriamha 06-10-2006 06:08 AM

I never leave Royce alone with his groomer so last week when I went for his appointment and found out that my favorite groomer went to work at their other location ( too far away from where I live ) and the new groomer refused to let me stay with Royce,I said no way jose and left went to a pet shop bought the tools that i was missing and groomed him my self . It took me 2 hrs but i did a great job . Plus Im very reluctant when I take Royce to the groomer always worry about hygiene issues etc....so i groom Royce myself and have peace of mind .:)

That's terrible. Thanks for the warning, when I take my new pup to the groomers I will be sure to ask about this.

that is terrible...I was going to go to petsmart now I am hesitant.. Gucci is in dire need of being groomed.. I had taken her to a place not far from me, this place was highly recommended. I should have left when the owner said to me, next time she goes to the bathroom there will be a charged. This is your first time I will let you get by..CAN YOU IMAGINE!! Gucci must have gotten nervous when we arrived and peeded... She kept her there for 9 hrs . the only good thing was she did a great job. But I will not take her back...Cause this time I would get nasty and I am afraid they would take it out on the dog.
I am thinking about trying a mobile groomer.

Their going to charge for her going to the bathroom? WOW. We took my dog to the vet at petsmart and they charged us an outrageous fee for what they did (he was their for his allergies) and they had to put a muzzle on him because he kept barking...which was fine with me, until we got the bill and saw they they charged us for some cheap cloth rinkydink muzzle that we didnt even get to keep! (Not that we wanted to keep it). The price they charged us was probably what the cost of it was if we actually bought it. We never took him back to that vet.

Nikki in bkyn 06-11-2006 09:22 PM

yes i was going to post the same thing but i was in shock, i live in bklyn and 5 mins away from this place, i have gone in there several times to consider having my dog groomed but only ended up getting his nails trimmed. the very day this incident happened i went to get tyler groomed but i didnt want to leave him there cause something told me not to. esp since tyler hates the idea of a blowdryer, he would have been in the same crate... i feel so sorry for the family, and they had the nerve to offer them a free puppy

Lexi Rae 06-12-2006 07:38 AM

why the hect did i just have to read that.. now im pissed off...
that poor baby ...

whispersmom2 06-12-2006 09:29 AM

OMG, that is horrible. I use a drying crate--I groom all of my babies- BUT my dryer does not have a heat element. You can ask the groomer what kind of dryer they use and IF it has a heat element and if the crate is open and vented. I use a smallish wire crate so there is no way anyone can get over-heated, plus, I set a timer. I work in adjoining rooms so I always know what is going on as I can see my kids in the crate..
After losing my baby last week while being spayed, I will never, never take anything for granted and will always try to stay with my baby while anything is being done to them.

vainchick5 06-12-2006 09:33 AM

This is exactly why I learned to groom Coco myself  I would NEVER in a million years trust anyone with my baby, because these people don't care, it's a job to them.:thumbdown

txshopper73 06-12-2006 09:49 AM

I took my Bichon to PetCo the other day to get groomed (and - please know that Bichons are among the most difficult and require the most time and personal attention to groom). Anyway, my little guy got the best haircut he has every had. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

They did a wonderful job - and he was happy happy when I picked him up. I am going to take my Yorkie there soon - and see what they do with him. (I'll get the same girl, of course.)

Yes - that was a very sad story.

we go to posh pets and get express grooming. it costs extra , but i don't care. he does not wait or get crated. they cater to him. it's personal upscale service. they hold him until i come back to get him. the service is awesome. it's pricey so i just do without personal luxuries for myself. i do without candles and pedicures and stuff i don't need to spoil my little guy.

shadream 06-12-2006 08:12 PM

I use to take my dogs to the groomers, however I found with 3 poodles this proved very expensive, I bought clippers and a few accessories for about the price of 1 trip with the 3 dogs and learned to cut them myself, they have had some funny cuts buy hey it grows back, and I have improved to the point that now when I groom them they look as good as they use to when I took them to a groomer, now my little yorkie never has to go to a groomer either, and I must say Yourkies are sooooo easy, just the belly and feet and around the rear area. Really is pretty easy.

Try it you'll be surprised how easy it is, first time tough after that you will do fine and never have to leave your baby again with a groomer.

i think it's awesome that some of you groom your own dogs. i think it's very scary and uncomfortable for them to get groomed by a stranger. i'm a wuss. i can't do the nail clipping , anal glands or ear plucking. i wish there was some type of class i could take to learn grooming for home. (not professional grooming) i would be devastated if i hurt him during grooming. i just stick to baths and brushing.

kaymo 06-12-2006 08:52 PM

I also use Posh Pets. The woman who grooms Bentley has yorkies herself and brings them to work with her sometimes so that's a huge comfort. Poor Bentley had been through so many bad experiences and horrific haircuts until I found Posh Pets. Now he's in and out in about an hour and I'm thrilled with the results.
You know as pet parents, we worry when they go in for surgery or teeth cleaning; we worry when we have to board them (Cindy Adam's dog, Jazzy, died suddenly at a boarding kennel) and we worry when they're groomed. I worry as much about my fur kids as my human kids, maybe even more since they can't talk!

romeos mommy 06-12-2006 08:54 PM

omg! you go to posh pets too! i tell everyone how much i adore their service. we are in pennsauken. maybe, we can meet up at a dog park. yippie... i so excited. someone local.:D :) :) :) :) :)

Whether or not you take your dog to a groomer is certainly a matter of personal choice. But it’s an unfair generalization to state that “these people just don’t care” and “it’s just a job to them”. I couldn’t disagree more. There are many folks on this forum and beyond who choose to use dog groomers and have great experiences. Furthermore, there are many wonderful groomers out there who take their craft seriously and it is more than just a job to them. Again, it is a matter of personal choice whether or not to use a groomer or do it yourself and I respect that. But it’s also not fair to infer that all groomers are careless and don’t take their jobs seriously. JMHO.

That’s terrible.:( I would be so upset. As if there isn’t enough to worry about at the groomer's….

It is a personal choice, however NO ONE will care about me baby like I do. They may take their craft seriously, but that's pretty much as far as it goes. They get tons of dogs to groom daily, and it is their job to groom them, not to love them, or coddle them. There is nothing special about one customers dog to them versus the other. I would rather put myself through the stress of learning how to groom my Coco then put her through the stress of having a complete stranger handle her. I was squeemish about the nails and ear plucking but you live and learn. I could, not now, not ever, trust a perfect stranger with my baby, even if it's just a haircut. That way I am responsible for my own dog, not someone else. I would not risk something like this happening because the groomer is too busy to remember my dog. Lots of people have great experiences and I'm sure people who have used the groomers in the original post have had those as well. It only takes one time and one accident. Personally I love my baby wayyyy too much to risk that. JMHO

JCarlson2004 06-13-2006 12:39 PM

Does anyone know the name of this place? I would like to know so that (in the future) I NEVER go there.
