Possum in my KITCHEN!!!! I had a very rude awakening this morning. I was sleeping on the couch this morning and heard Kirby eating his dog food in the kitchen, then I realized he was on the couch WITH ME!! I went to investigate, thinking it must be some other kind of noise and when I got in there I almost stepped on a BABY POSSUM!! They look like GIANT RATS!! Now, I was barefoot and in my underwear and I don't mind telling you that I jumped and screamed (it was a very manly scream though) it was a classic "mouse-eek" moment! It didn't run away (but I did), it just sat there playing possum I guess, so I ran around looking for something to catch it in and tried to throw a box over it but I missed and it ran into a hole under the counter. What a ghetto I live in! Jeeze. Where was Kirby during all this you ask? He was hiding behind me the whole time, big tough guard dog, ya right!! I might be MOVING very soon!!! |
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Way to go Kirby :) hehe! I have a mouse problem in my kitchen and it's so freakin nasty! Did you call your apt. manager? If they don't help call the Dept. of Health. They helped me :) |

That's a good idea about the health dept. I'll definitely call them if the apartments don't take care of it by doing more than just plugging the hole under my counter, that's a joke. |
Oh No! You are having the same prob I've been having for over a year now. They will come and plug the hole but they will chew through it again and again. If you need any tips of dealing with the health department and your apt. offices legal team let me know, I'm a pro! :) |
As long as it was a manly scream... ;) You may want to add some kind of rat poison or something to that area (where Kirby can't get into of course) if they do plug up that hole. |

I have had experience with possums before in Oregon. We had them in our house, but they were only in the walls, and mostly between the floor and basement ceiling, they never had acess into the living spaces. That was an ordeal first to find out where they were getting in and then trying to get them out so I could plug the hole. I didn't want to seal them in and have them die inside. They did have babies too and one, or more, of the babies did die and smelled really bad for a couple of weeks. And possums are nocturnal and the thought of those freakin' ugly things coming in my house at night has me totally freaked out! Guess I'll be sleeping with every light in the house on!! |

That was ME about 2 months ago in Houston - I went to leave my house and there was a HUGE UGLY Possum on my Front Doorstep - just about ready to ring the doobell I swear - I opened the door - saw it - Freaked and started cussing at it - HE jumped a mile .....took a HUGE WIZ.... and waddled off as fast as he could. I guess I scared the piss out of him :D |

KD, I wouldn't use the rat poison...what if it dies somewhere in or around your apartment and then you don't find it...till you notice the smell...:shocked7q :shocked7q I remember living in the country...had little mice in the house and so I put out those sticky traps. WELL, I happen to forget about one till I noticed the smell...it was disgusting. Another mouse got trapped in the bathroom...and it was just about free of the trap. Got the bb gun on that one. |
Hey KD...check your recipe thread..I think bchgrl is posting possum recipes for you!! Note to Admin...can we please have a stove smiley...we could get better use from that than we could a sewing maching smiley! Thanks! |

Almost every species of animals has cute babies, even baby alligators are kind of cute, but baby possums are like little freakin' alien monsters!! |
1 Attachment(s) Imagine almost stepping on one of these freaky things barefoot!! Sure, they look cute in a flowerpot with hay in it, but NOT in your HOUSE!! |

We live in the country and when I would always take Gidget outside to go potty, well I learned my lesson quick. Never take her out without a leash. She loved to corner possoms, snap and bark at them. I could not get her away from them for anythimg. My husband would have to yell her name and she would come running. Unfortunately he was the only one she minded, probably cause she knew he would make her if she didn't. I just lost her last wednesday and it has been tough. So I enjoy reading everyones stories. Although I am going to pick up my new baby yorkie today, can't wait!! |

The only possum I have seen have been Road Kill. I am still trying to convince the people at my office I saw a Badger in the Parking lot. I have been told Badgers don't live in NJ. I don't think I will qualify for a wilderness guide anytime soon. Maybe I can start my training in KD apartment.:sidesplt: :sidesplt: |
A manly scream in his underware ..hummmmmm I think I'm getting a visual ..let alone a rat like creature eating dog food ..:lol tears :eyeballpc :sidesplt: :bed_time: will never be the same ..in that place ..hehe |
OH MY GOSH! I would have absolutely FLIPPED!! Poor you!! |

And yes, bed time is not going to be fun. The apartment mgr called 'pest control' but they can't come until tomorrow and these little creatures are nocturnal, yikes!! I'm sure I'll sleep well, ya right. I have a piece of rolled up cardboard stuck in the hole and a board across the kitchen doorway just in case one of them does get back in the kitchen they won't be able to get into the rest of the apartment. I think I'll sleep in my cowboy boots tonight just in case :D (now how's that mental image, even worse huh) txshopper asked me what happened to the manly man she's come to know. I told her that I protect my women from burglars, rapists, phycho killers and obnoxious drunks in bars but I draw the line at snakes and RATS!!! LOL |
You guys are mean. Poor little possum he just wanted to eat, he was hungry!! Plus, I think they are cute. I see them all the time in my backyard and Kiki(the cat) goes bananas when she sees one, but since she is an indoor cat she can't go uotside and chase the poor possum. I like them and I wouldn't hurt them as long as they don't hurt me or mess with me or my pets. |
